Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. A set of original ornamental symbols was designed by Viktor Kharyk and licensed to ParaType in 2007. The name was inspired by the famous book “Champ Fleury” by Geoffroy Tory (1529) but the theme of blooming meadow was embodied much more literally. Each ornamental motive has a real prototype in flora. Mainly there are plants raising on Ukrainian wooded steppe. Plants were chosen for their Ukrainian and Latin names begin of proper letters from Ukrainian and Latin alphabets. The font is consisted of two styles: Day for normal and Night for reversed that reminds night lighting by its unexpected distribution of black and white areas. Fleurons may be used for creation of ornamental surfaces, composed borders and corners, decoration of any materials, and even as botanical illustrations. The inspiration source for MFC Spindler Borders is a collection of border treatments revived from the “Catalog 25 TYPE FACES” by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler. The border designs were recreated from two different border sets, “Classic Art Borders” and “Classic Black & White Borders”. This collection of borders represents a structured repetition of elements in various ways to create elegant patterns and backgrounds. You can start with a new document or work on a new layer within an existing document. Select MFC Spindler Borders from the font menu. (Some users may have font previewing enabled in the font menu which will cause the font name to appear as border elements, disable this option in order to choose the name) Make certain that the point size of the font is the same as the leading being applied to the font so the borders will meet up properly. This is a cute story about a mother and her son. :) About a decade ago my own mother got very interested in my work. She used to say my letters had so many swirls and dazzling swashes, and suggested my job seemed to be very fun. She wondered if she could ever try to make her own alphabet... Well, she is a civil engineer and a maths teacher, and appeared to be a little tired of exact sciences... I remember answering this, while she was listening with her typical tender look: -"Mamá... While type-design may be a really enjoyable thing to do, it also involves having a great eye and knowledge about the history of letters: nice curves and shapes require a meticulous study and, like it happens in many fields, practice makes perfect"-. Well, she raised her eyebrows at me. -"and so what?"- She didn't have any experience neither in the field of art nor in the field of graphic design so, I told her that if she really wanted to get into this she should borrow some of my calligraphic books from my beloved shelves in my office. So... she did. Some weeks after that, she came to me with many sketches made with pencils and markers: some letters where very nice and unique while others naturally needed some work. I remember she added ball terminals to all of her letters (even if they didn't need them) because that was one of the rules she imposed. After some back and forth, we had the basis for what would be today, ten years later, the seed of this lovely font Girasol. Her proposal was nice, something I was not accustomed to do, that’s why many years later I decided to watch it with fresh new eyes and finished it. While she was in charge of making the lowercase letters, I helped with the uppercase and also added my hallmark in the alternates, already seen in others of my expressive fonts. The result is an upright decorative font that follows the behavior of the copperplate nib with a naive touch that makes it really cute and useful for a wide range of products. Many alternates per glyph make Girasol a very fun to use font which will delight you. Above posters are a proof of that! Solantra is a solidly crafted handwritten script. I’ve long felt that beautiful writing is more pleasing to the eye than the more attention grabbing swashes and flourishes. That being said, both have their role in design and Solantra has a large slice of each. Solantra combines vintage style handwriting with all its quirks and English Roundhand of that same era. The result is a solid setting script filled with charm and personality. With default Adobe Illustrator settings for Ligatures and Contextual Alternates active, the vintage charm is in full display. Want to add more flair? There are loads of more embellished letters inside the full version. Solantro takes into account how scripts are actually written so that connections from letter to letter are more fluid and rhythmic than the average script font. In natural script/handwriting most letters end at the bottom right and move up to connect with the next. Some letters like o, v, and w, however; end at the top right. Rather than force these letters to dip down and go back up they should ideally connect from that upper right point. This is accomplished through a series of alternate letters and ligatures with extensive contextual feature programming. So, for example, you might get one version of a ligature in the middle of a word and a different one at the beginning or end of that word. Solantra also takes into account another often overlooked feature of natural handwriting. When you write you inevitably pick your pen up from the paper at times. This is often just to reposition the hand, but in the days of writing with dip pens this was also needed to attain a fresh supply of ink. Having these occasional breaks in connections makes the writing less static and more rhythmic. While the Basic versions are limited to a standard character set and several ligatures and alternates for better settings of text, the full pro versions contains 1292 glyphs and an abundance of features. Even with numbers there are options like Oldstyle numbers, fractions, and ordinals. Central European language support is included as well as some select ligatures that use accents. Designed by Francesco Canovaro with help from Andrea Tartarelli and Maria Chiara Fantini, Kitsch is a typeface happily living at the crossroads between classical latin and medieval gothic letterforms. But, rather than referencing historical models like the italian Rotunda or the french Bastarda scripts, Kitsch tries to renew both its inspirations, finding a contemporary vibe in the dynamic texture of the calligraphic broad-nib pen applied to the proportions of the classical roman skeleton. The resulting high contrast and spiky details make Kitsch excel in display uses, while a fine-tuned text version manages to keep at small sizes the dynamic expressivity of the design without sacrificing legibility. Both variants are designed in a wide range of weights (from the almost monolinear thin to the dense black), and are fully equipped with a extended character sets covering over two hundred languages that use latin, cyrillic and greek alphabets. Special care has been put in designing Kitsch italic letterforms, with the broad-nib movements referencing classical italian letterforms to add even more shades to your typographic palette. For some time, Eric de Berranger had wanted to create a distressed typeface design - one that gave the appearance of antique printing and showed signs of wear, yet was still highly readable. He was busy designing a new face called Maxime, when an idea struck: I realized that I could use these lettershapes as the basis for my antique typeface," he says. The two faces ended up being designed in tandem. While ITC Oldbook clearly captures the flavor of aged, uneven and imperfect printing, it also meets de Berranger's goal of being exceptionally readable in text sizes. Beginning with well-drawn characters was the key, and these were carefully modeled into the distressed forms. "The process was more difficult than I originally thought," says de Berranger. "The antique letters had to be tested and modified several times to work correctly." ITC Oldbook elegantly simulates antique printing in both text and display sizes. And while stroke weights are uneven and curves are irregular, the design has remarkably even color when set in blocks of text copy. Add to this the design's inherent legibility, and ITC Oldbook acquires a range far beyond replication of things old; it's suitable for any project that calls for warm and weathered typography. ITC Oldbook is available in roman and bold weights with complementary italic designs. Small caps, old style figures and a suite of alternate characters and ornaments provide additional flexibility and personality to the design."

ITC Werkstatt is a result of the combined talents of Alphabet Soup's Paul Crome and Satwinder Sehmi, along with Ilene Strizver and Colin Brignall. It is inspired by the work of Rudolph Koch, the renowned German calligrapher, punchcutter, and type designer of the first third of this century, without being based directly on any of Koch's typefaces. Werkstatt has obvious affinities with the heavy, woodcut look of Koch's popular Neuland, but also with display faces like Wallau and even the light, delicate Koch Antiqua. Brignall began by drawing formal letters with a 55mm cap height, which Sehmi reinterpreted using a pen with a broad-edge nib. “Not an easy process,” says Brignall, “since one of the features of Koch's style is that while it was calligraphic in spirit, most of the time his counter shapes did not bear any resemblance to the external shapes, as they would in normal calligraphy. This meant that Sehmi could not complete a whole character in one go, but had to create the outside and inside shapes separately and then ink in the center of the letters.” The process was repeated, only without entirely filling in the outlines, for the Engraved version. Crome handled the scanning and digitization, maintaining the hand-made feel while creating usable digital outlines. “The collaboration of artisans with particular skills,” says Brignall, “in a modern-day, computer-aided studio environment, seems very much in step with the 'workshop' ethos that Rudolph Koch encouraged and promoted so much.”

An authentic style of feminine handwriting with a pencil Who still writes by hand? And who still writes nicely? What constitutes beautiful handwriting anyway? In Marleen Script nearly 100 stylistic alternates for individual letters and more than 400 ligatures are included. With these options it is finally possible to convincingly simulate the effect of true handwriting with a typeface. So, the form of the single character seldom repeats itself since it is mostly replaced with a ligature; and, with each combination of characters the result is a slightly different form of the individual character. Type set in Marleen Script appears remarkably similar to a text actually handwritten with a pencil. The characters of Marleen Script have intentionally been digitalized as a bit loose and irregular. Stylistic alternates are available for many of the letters, some even with various alternates to choose from, in order to produce a font with a very lively appearance. This typeface also fills a completely different kind of gap: finally, a ”typically female“ font. Spirited capital letters, the tendency toward loops and the obvious inclination toward the left are all common characteristics of ”female scripts.“ The original for Marleen Script was created by Marleen Baumann from Augsburg in the spring of 2010 using a sharp pencil on rough handmade paper. In spite of irregularities, this font is aesthetical. Although most people rarely put forward an effort with their handwriting, in Marleen Script one can see the desire for an attractive form.

Pink is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson, a sans serif in a style typical of the 1990s. Capitals are slightly condensed and feature unusual variations in stroke widths and the lowercase has an even more irregular stroke pattern, yet an even texture is produced when used in word settings.

Circus stars is Vladislav Ivanov font with a retro touch, inspired by the look of old circus and movie posters. It works well with normal size text, but it works even better for large displays, short words, or even just to incorporate a few or single characters in a design.

Coil feels comfortable like a well-worn pair of shoes. It could easily pass for an assertive industrial European sans serif of the early 1960s with its slight reverse contrast, monotonous proportions, and squared-off curves, if not for its less predictable side. What appears initially as ellipses upon closer inspection turns out to be irregular shapes, closer to an inverted egg than an oval. The s looks topsy-turvy with its higher curve that is larger than the lower. Some terminal strokes overhang the bowl (as in the a), others open flat (as in the Q, the f, the j, and the t). The resulting effect shakes up this seemingly “retro” face just to make it new. Our midcentury recollections are slightly distorted and reinterpreted by this ironic typeface making it fresh while deceptively cozy and familiar. Coil’s high x-height and even texture make it readable even in small sizes despite its tight apertures. Available in four weights with their italics, with two sets of figures, fractions, and alternates for Extended Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Designed by Vyacheslav Kirilenko and Gayaneh Bagdasaryan, 2020-21.

Delfino Script is a cool, connecting script that can appear both retro and contemporary. Curved on the outsides of strokes, and jagged inside, the forms look like an abstraction of strips of tape, folding and flowing, or even marker pen style lettering. This script is not created by any pen though - its forms are constructed, not painted. Typographic features like ink traps add sparkle to the text. OpenType features include ligatures, contextual alternates (for more realistic connections) and stylistic sets. Stylistic Set 1 changes certain upper case letters into forms more suited for all caps setting, although they can also be used freely with the lower case. Set 2 changes the r into a less scripty form and set 3 adds a connecting tail to the q. Delfino Script would find itself at home in cookery books, fashion blogs, vintage car magazines and set large and proud on expanses of concrete, or, most likely, whatever you might have in mind for it! Delfina Script is practically identical to Delfino save for round tittles, periods and any other dot shaped glyph components. Strangely for such a little change, it does seem to give the face a different character.

Amongst some pages scanned and posted online of old wood type alphabets comes this lovely, ornamental design in a reversed style of white lettering on black rectangular boxes. This classic set of wood type is now available digitally as Wood Fancy Reverse JNL. There is a narrow blank box on the “less than” key for use as an end cap, and a wider blank box on the “greater than” key to use between words as a blank space if so desired.

Franz Kafka’s manuscripts have always been a source of inspiration for designer Julia Sysmäläinen. At first she was just interested in literary aspects but later she noticed that content and visual form can not be separated in the work of this ingenious writer. Analyzing Kafka’s handwriting at the Berlin National Library, Julia was inspired to design the typeface FF Mister – by now a well known classic. Over the years, FF Mister K became a handsome typeface family and even produced offspring: the Josef K Patterns. Some of Kafka’s most expressive letterforms were the starting point for these decorative ornaments. How do the Patterns work? Outlines and fillings correspond to the uppercase and the lowercase letters on your keyboard. You can use them separately or layer them on top of each other. If you write a line of “pattern-text” in lowercase and repeat it underneath in uppercase you get a row of fillings followed by a row of outlines. Now you can color them and then set line space = 0 to get a single line of layered colored ornaments. Alternatively, activating OpenType / stylistic set / stylistic alternates will also unite the two lines to a single layered line. GHEA Aram is a super family font. It has 10 upright weights and their Italics. GHEA Aram supports Central European, Armenian and Cyrillic language systems. The weights from Regular to Bold and their Italics can be used as text fonts. The weights thinner than Regular and thicker than Bold can be used as Display fonts. It is an easily readable two side serif high contrast font but the eyes don't get tired while reading.

Diverting is an aesthetic signature font that comes with more than 30 ligatures set so it can feel like a handwritten style vibe. For switching on the swash under line, you can write type "underscore (_) + (plus) and number 1 until 6". Diverthing font also have alternate subtitutions for uppercase and some lowercase, this font is perfect for branding, advertising, handwritten quotes, social media post, headlines, subtitle, wedding invitations, greeting cards, signature name, logotype, etc.

Nothing is more iconic of Paris than its antique Metro signs, which are the inspiration for this typeface. The signs vary from station to station, some featuring plain block capitals, others the most exquisite Art Nouveau. This example falls somewhere in between. and should inject a strong gallic flavour into any design or publishing project. To recreate the Metro effect in Photoshop, set your text white on red, then go to Layer Style> Inner Shadow. Or with Paris Metro Reverse set your text red on white, then go to Layer Style> Drop Shadow.

One of the odder things I remember from high school (50+ years ago) is the tile floor of hexagons in the bathroom. There is something fascinating with the way hexagons fill the plane. BakerHalfDozen is made of white letters that fit on black, hexagonal tiles. BakerHalfWhite switches the letters to black on white tiles, and BakerHalfBare eliminates the tiles. There are no true lower-case letters, but some letters have alternate shapes. To make the tiles line up right, alternate lines must be indented half a space. Use the {} characters (brackets) to do this.

Kuschelfraktur is a unique, eye-catching take on the theme of blackletter that replaces the broad nib with a brush pen and achieves stroke modulation through stencil-like gaps. It combines the texture and dignity of blackletter with the human warmth of informal handwriting. Kuschelfraktur offers five separate sets of capital letters and several additional customization option via stylistic alternates. The degree of ornamentation in the blackletter capitals can be increased (SS02) or decreased (SS07), while SS04 and SS05 offer two simpler approaches to capital letters that bridge from blackletter to Roman letters (Antiqua). The default single-storey �a� can be replaced with a two-storey version in SS01, and SS08 offers a single-storey capital �A� for the simple capitals. Finally, SS03 restores some of the more unique letter shapes of the Fraktur style of blackletter. The old-style figures can be replaced with lining and/or tabular figures. All these stylistic sets are accessible via OpenType from the main font, Kuschelfraktur, whereas the spin-off fonts (Traditional, Verziert, Text, Schlicht, Antiqua) offer convenient access to those sets even in environments without OpenType support.
