Refinery is the newest font in the Evanston Collection of square typefaces. With a similar capital structure to Tavern and Alehouse, Refinery includes both lowercase and small caps, making it an ideal typeface for paragraph text settings. It also comes in a wide array of weights and widths, with 85 font files in total. DESIGN Refinery has it’s roots in early 20th century signage and saloon typography, but has been modernized - even future-ized - to fit the 21st century digital landscape. The design was aimed at providing a type family that could work in many modern design fields, from sports, tech and military to gaming, HUD, virtual reality and augmented reality. ENGINEERING Essentially. Refinery is a simple mono-linear square design has been expertly refined into an easy-reading sans serif typeface. It was designed to be used in both display and text settings. Umbilical Noose is a rather scary typeface. It is quite similar to an older font of mine: Nyctophobia. The name comes from a Nirvana song called Heart Shaped Box, in which Kurt Cobain sings: "throw down your umbilical noose, so I can climb right back". I have always liked that phrase a lot. Umbilical Noose is an all caps font, but upper and lower case are different and you can easily interchange the glyphs.

While viewing a YouTube video of film footage in and around New York in the mid-1930s, one scene showed some people “window shopping” by the storefront office of the French Line, an international steamship service. A screen capture allowed the storefront sign to be recreated as the digital typeface Steamship JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

PM Showman is based on vintage hand-painted sign writing from the 1900s through the 1960s. Seen on everything from office signs to posters, it was a staple of business communication and entertainment advertising in the early 20th century. Privé is a display handwriting font. The typeface is a distinct uppercased style hand drawn font and designed to be easy to read. Privé name is Old French for “private” or “participating in secret”. While strolling through the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, I came across a delightful painting by Wassily Kandinsky entitled “Succession”. Many of the forms seemed to me typographic so, of course, a font followed, and this is it: wild, wacky and delightfully different. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Arial is one of the most widely used designs of the last 30 years. Drawn in 1982 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders for use in an early IBM® laser printer, Arial has become a staple for textual content. While it is widely believed that Arial's design was based on Helvetica, it is more accurate to consider Monotype Grotesque as its ancestor.

Golden Wraith Fonts designed the digital typeface Hastynga It began as an effort to find a solution to the digital aesthetic. By distorting digital fonts into a fluid style of writing with a variation in direction between strokes from one letter to the next, Hastynga allows for simulated text imperfection. The typeface was designed for ParaType in 2002 by Dmitry Kirsanov. Based on the Mesolithic images on stones were discovered in a prehistoric cave of Mas d’Asil, France. Created by Chank in 1992, Ribjoint was Chank’s first attempt at creating a Egyptian, cursive font on the computer. Writing cursive with a pencil sure is easy, but getting all the letters to link up correctly in computerized font format is a bit tricky. Not the most graceful script in the world, but it works good enough for a BBQ pit.

A while back I created a nice font called Harimau. It is a childish font, with a happy feel to it. Harimau had some unusual glyphs, most notably the 'g' and the 'j', which, for some designers, were a little too unusual. Therefore I have created a new font based on the old Harimau: it is similar, but comes with 'normal' glyphs.

A charming series of 26 holiday “type warmers” based on the works of Carl S. Junge for the Barnhart Brothers & Spindler type foundry in the 1920s. Single-color cuts are in the uppercase positions, while 13 of the cuts suitable for two-color usage occupy the lowercase in adjacent pairs; e.g., a and b, c and d, and so on.

Hailing its roots from the much-prized Modern Didot and Bodoni families of the late 19th century, Pyes Pa re-introduces the intuition of calligraphic script while utilizing the contrast available to contemporary digital fonts to produce a highly refined alternative for those of us who are bloody serious about our Bodoni Poster Italics. While Student Council JNL was not influenced by any school activities, the design is based on a lithographed cardboard sign (circa 1930s) for Spizz Sparkling Water, a bottled seltzer from the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company of Lexington, Kentucky.
