Linotype BioPlasm is a display face created by Italian design Mauro Carichini in 2002. I was playing around with an old brush I found in our kitchen: it had fallen under the stove and it had probably been hiding there for quite some time! I dusted it off, got my Chinese ink and set to work. The result is a scary-ish font. Mortal Coil comes with discretionary ligatures for double lower case letter combinations.

I like the expression ‘being on tenterhooks’. Not that I’m on tenterhooks very often! Tenterhooks was made with a broken satay skewer (see poster 2 for the actual thing) and Chinese ink. It came out rather rough, but it does have a nice flow and a certain ‘wild elegance’. Comes with double letter ligatures and a whole bunch of diacritics.

I have always been fascinated by Grigory Rasputin, the rogue ‘monk’ who influenced the Russian Tsar Nicholas and - according to rumours - bedded the Tsarina. Grigory font was handmade with the use of a Chinese marker pen and rough paper. Grigory comes with all the trimmings; some alternate glyphs, a few double letter ligatures, a great amount of diacritics and basic Cyrillic as well.

A Konditorei is a German Confectionery Shop. A good Konditorei offers a wide variety of pastries and often also serves as a café. Coquillage is French for seashell or shellfish. Since I’m going to France this year for a camping holiday with my family, I thought it was a good idea to give this charming connected script a ‘holiday name’! Coquillage was handmade with a Japanese pen. It is a lovely connected script and comes with double-letter ligatures and a full range of diacritics.

Ciabatta is a luscious font made especially for packaging. Thanks to 5 weights, it can be used for all eventualities; powerful in headlines or as lettering, yet very legible in small texts. Its shapes are slightly narrow and based on classical italics but Ciabatta includes alternates with a double-storey ‘a’ and ‘g’ which offer a more formal appearance upright.

Tale is an experiment to convert the script-style calligraphy into bitmap format. The two variants have the same dimensions, but (as the naming suggests), Forty has double amount of pixels in it when compared to Twenty. Both variants have hand made bitmaps to compliment these correlating point sizes, and you can always get the appropriate bitmaps by multiplying by two.

Based on the popular Microbrew Family (Rising Star, May 2014), Signyard is a display family trapped in time. Inspired by vintage restaurant and hotel signs, Signyard comes decked out in incandescent bulbs for a an authentic retro feel. The family has a unique vintage cinema style, but also works well with a variety of subject matter including weddings, birthdays, breweries, coffee houses, cigar shops, and many more. Signyard is an all caps display font, but the lowercase act as alternates. For super-easy alternates, just mix uppercase and lowercase letters. The hand-hewn Islander looks like it could have been liberated from granite blocks.These demonstrative letter forms leave no doubt when it comes to conveying your message, yet they remain playful.

Koralle was an abundant family of grotesque font styles which had been released by Schelter & Giesecke in the first quarter of the previous century. Out of this family four of the most impressive styles were revived, whereby I stuck as close to the original as possible. All styles contain even the weird-looking capitalized German double-s of which I am a strong opponent.

HU NoodleKR is a stencil-type font designed for drawing with one brush and writing in stroke order. It is composed of large grapheme for good visibility, and fine curves are added to the shape based on straight lines to create a soft feel. Slughals is danish for someone who eats to much in a kind of greedy way. It came to my mind that "slug" ("swallow" in danish) is snail in English. It lead my mind to the brushtraces of the font, could look like traces from a snail/slug. Slughals has ligatures for most double letters and two fancy swashes for the letters r and k.

The other day I drank a glass of white wine, which was partly made with Colombard grapes. When I created this font, I needed a bit of a ‘posh’ name, so I settled on Colombard.
