A lobby card for the 1929 movie musical “Broadway Melody” features the bulk of the film’s title hand lettered in a playful sans serif style. This design is now available as Movie Musical JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

In the MGM musical "Broadway Melody of 1940", a new stage production has its gala opening at the fictitious Lafayette Theater on the Great White Way. The front of the theater is resplendent with classic neon signage, and the theater's name is in an interesting Art Deco design. Musical Number JNL recreates this lettering in digital form.

The 1940s-era hand-lettered title on vintage sheet music for the song hit "Donkey Serenade" had an interpretation of the classic typeface "Broadway" used in a Mexican/Southwest motif with wavy lines cutting through the letters. Adapting Playwright JNL (itself, a hand-lettered interpretation of "Broadway") to this style, the festive design is now a digital typeface called Southwest Serenade JNL.

Here's an Art Deco classic with a bit of an edge. This typeface is based on a somewhat less refined but more energetic version of Broadway, designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF in 1928, originally named Broadway Poster. Both versions of this font contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Monotype Gallia's design was initially developed by Wadsworth A. Parker for the American Type Founders (ATF) in 1927. Monotype released its own version in 1928. Its style is embodied with the spirit of the American Art Deco age and the Roaring 20s. It makes a superb headline selection, and has also been used effectively for packaging as well. If you're getting tired of using Broadway, here’s an exciting alternative in regular and bold weights. Douglas C. McMurtrie, Aaron Borad, and Leslie Sprunger began designing this high-contrast novelty face for the Ludlow Foundry in 1928. It retains the classic style of the Jazz Age with a bit more individuality and spirit than Broadway. This extreme thick and thin design also sports normal descenders instead of the clipped ones found on Broadway. Ultramodern Classic is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Playwright JNL and Playwright Slant JNL are versions of the perennial Art Deco font Broadway—with a look as if lettered by a sign painter.

A new take on the perennial Art Deco favorite, Broadway, interpreted by 1930s lettering artist Harold Holland Day, and named after a 1960s R&B song.

While designing a logotype for a client, she described herself as "loud and colorful." Thinking about some eras in typefaces that portrayed this idea, I instantly thought of the "Roaring 20s" and the Prohibition era where the cinema is starting to take off and the Italian mafia are running the bars. (Which is coincidental because my client has family connections to Al Capone.) One of the most iconic typefaces designed for these times was Broadway by Morris Fuller Benton in 1925. This typeface was the zeitgeist of Broadway, the big city, theater, and cinema, which can now be seen in use almost everywhere an old family run cinema is located. Using the heavy influences of the thick and thin contrast of this typeface, Maritote brings the charm of Broadway into the 21st century.

Sideron is a first release and has some minor similarities to Broadway in its thick and thin strokes but is much squarer. There is also an Italic version.

Hand lettering used in the trailer for the 1943 movie musical “Broadway Rhythm” was the inspiration for Show Tune JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Bonita is a bold handlettering style based on movie poster lettering from the early 20th century. It's similar to the typeface Broadway, but much bolder and far less formal.

Broadveau is retro typeface that embodies the feel of both Broadway and Art Nouveau. The upper case characters are standardized, while the lower case letters contains playful curvy alternates that give the font its character. While most fonts maintain a common baseline, and vary in height, some of Broadveau’s alternates vary on the baseline, making for an interesting, yet surprisingly readable, textual landscape. This is a title case font only, which contains all the standard sub-255 (upper case) unicode characters. With the alternates it’s almost like 2 fonts in one.

In 1928, the application of pure geometric form to sanserifs and slabserifs was in full swing. Morris Fuller Benton applied geometry to the Modern letterform to arrive at Parisian and Broadway for ATF.

The opening title card for 1940's "Two Girls on Broadway" was the basis for Ticket Booth JNL. A typical Art Deco typeface, its features include a squared letter shape with rounded corners and a thin character weight.

Vintage sheet music for a song from the Broadway Musical “Kiss Me Kate” is the inspiration for Katydid JNL. The play’s name was written in a ball-and-line type of lettering which somewhat resembles either 'Tinker Toys' or celestial mapping.

Add some twinkling lights to a bold Art Deco font such as Art Lesson JNL, and the result is a typeface which truly puts your name (or message) up in lights. Opening Night JNL conjures up images of Broadway plays and Hollywood premiers.

Sheet music for the song "My Ideal" (from the 1930 Paramount picture "Playboy of Paris" starring Maurice Chevalier) had the name of the movie hand lettered in an Art Deco, Broadway-influenced type design. This became the inspiration for Parisian Playboy JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Noir et Blanc began as a proposed logo for a new Broadway production of Moulin Rouge and ended up as a challenge to find how bold a stroke weight could still be beautifully legible. Now that it is complete, we hope it will have the chance to become noir et blanc et rouge partout.

From the title on the sheet music for the 1935 composition "Along Tobacco Road" comes Deco Triline JNL in both regular and oblique versions. Reminiscent of Broadway if done as a neon sign, this typeface virtually shouts about the Manhattan nightlife of the 1930s. For maximum readability, space the letters a bit wider than normal.

In the days when sheet music was as popular as phonograph records for home entertainment, a song album was a folio of collected works. The hand-lettering on the 1940s-era cover for "The Sigmund Romberg Song Album, Book II" served as the model for Song Album JNL. Romberg was a noted composer of Broadway show tunes.

Scandals JNL is free-form hand lettering with an Art Nouveau influence showing up on a 1928 piece of sheet music for the song "American Tune", and is based on the cover text noting the song was from the popular (9th Edition) of George White's Scandals; a Broadway musical-variety show. The Greek-influenced hand lettering on a 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster for the Federal Theater presentation of "Trojan Incident" inspired Euripedes JNL. The play was based on Homer and Euripedes, and was presented at the off-Broadway St. James Theatre (which opened in 1927 at 246 W. 44th Street on the site of the original Sardi's restaurant).
