The type “Vandalismo 26” is a tribute to the calligraphy style that 'screams' over the front of the buildings in the center of São Paulo/Brazil. This underground calligraphy, known as "pichação" or "pixo”, is a movement that expresses disagreement and rejection against the system. For some critics, this “vandalism” is considered to be the most disruptive and conceptual contemporary art today. It is a type to be used in headlines. Vandalismo 26 is a mix of the chaotic pixo style representing the nonconformity of a generation. It is a protest to the system in a typographic format.

Culebra is a neo-traditionalist small-caps font designed in the tradition of high-end metalwork craftspeople and Western & Victorian sign-painting styles. Morning News is the sister font of Evening News which I designed some years ago for use with my local newspaper Abendzeitung. Morning News is an adaption, a little bit rounder, which gives the font a much softer touch. The general design dates back to the pre-Hitler era, the time when Germany had already lost the first World War and was taking a short deadly breath to start the second big war. Pacaembu is a sans serif typeface that finds its roots in Brazilian football. This seven weight family began as a study of the stone lettering found in the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Municipal Stadium, affectionately known as the Estádio Pacaembu, a real gem of the Art-Deco style inaugurated in 1940. These art-deco letters, like football itself, were brought to Brazil by Europeans and out there in the tropics found a totally unique personality. LFT Etica, the-moralist-typefamily-project, was born at the end of 2000, but its development is ongoing, overcoming many hurdles and diversions. The starting point for the designers at Leftloft were the common "cold" grotesk sans serifs, ubiquitous and often badly applied in their everyday visual environment. The challenge was to obtain the same force, versatility and color, but with a much warmer feel. The resulting design has soft strokes, open counters and terminals; aesthetically resting somewhere between a grotesque and humanist sans serif. For 138 years, the Milton Bradley Company (of Springfield, Massachusetts) has been the leading producer of board games, toys and educational/instructional materials. The company was acquired by Hasbro in 1984. It was merged with the also-acquired Parker Brothers in 1991 and became Hasbro Games until both brand ID's were dropped in 2009. “The Moving Picture Game” was a 1920s-era board game created by Howard R. Garis (credited as ‘the author of the Uncle Wiggily game’) and capitalized on the still-new motion picture industry. On top of the storage box is the game’s name – hand lettered in a free-flowing Art Nouveau sans serif that more closely resembles the titles found within animated cartoons or in the ‘bubble letters’ a school child doodles on notebook paper. Recreated as a digital typeface, Pratfall JNL (named after the slips, trips and falls taken by silent era film comedians) is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Max J. Gradl was a German jewelry designer. A Web search today turns up several examples of his work from the turn of the 20th century. He seemed to favor green stones in silver metalwork. Gradl also did advertising work and co-authored a book on architectural design. Most important for our purposes, though, are the incredible hand lettered alphabets and monograms the man left behind. I’ve digitized one of those delightful alphabets and tried to keep it true to the original. Beyond the base character set of letters, numerals and basic punctuation, I had to extrapolate forms that, I hope, hold true to Gradl’s design. Enjoy!

Caturrita is a versatile family for use in both long texts, and can be used in titles. The characters have fluidity, contemplating the principle of continuity. Stubby Rough is a display type family with 4 styles, inspired by the vernacular landscape. It was made for titles, headlines and also packages, posters and everything that provide space for a rude, fat and widish type. Nonetheless it can be a type for text if you are looking for an informal shape, with eleven styles mixing from a narrowed thin to a sloppy ultrabold. Stubby has a tight spacing looking to fit in squeeze places, trying to simulate some real spirit of the botecos from Brazil, always serving very cold beer in stubby brown bottles. Stubby Rough is a distressed version of the original Stubby.

ITC Bailey Sans is the first typeface family created by Kevin Bailey, a graphic designer in Dallas, Texas. He was once looking for an understated block serif for a design project and could find nothing suitable. Bailey began working on his own serif face but then found that the basics of his new design worked well as a sans serif and continued on that track. ITC Bailey Sans font is available in four weights: book, book italic, bold and bold italic and even has a companion serif display font, ITC Baily Quad Bold.

The design of Sanity typeface is modernized by abandoning any characteristics associated with hand writing, such as curved lines or elaborate corner details. The Kelson font family is a Armasen project completed for a graphic design agency in Brazil. Hiragino Serif (Mincho) is a font adapted for the digital age. It was designed to permit finely detailed tuning that allows the sizes of both kanji and kana to be adjusted for greatest visibility. Arkeo BT is designer Brian Sooy's first typeface family published by Bitstream. Given very few design elements to work with, Brian has designed a bitmap font that is unique and very readable. There are three widths, Condensed, Regular and Extended. In our opinion, pixels never looked so good. Arkeo performs equally well on screen and as on paper. The OpenType versions include an extended character set featuring oldstyle figures, fractions and additional f-ligatures. Design was begun in late 2001 and completed in 2002. Sooy asked Bitstream to critique, which we did gladly. We also added additional characters for OpenType. This included alternate figure set, an extended set of fractions and additional f-ligatures. Sooy used preliminary versions for setting parts of the TypeCon 2002 material and website.

Satellite PT started out as an experiment. Wanting to explore the geometry of using angles instead of curves, I started sketching out the face using grid paper. I had seen similar fonts that tended to be completely symmetrical. My exploration tended to include what I humorously call 'faux humanist' elements, such as asymmetrical bowls, tapers and 'flare-serifs' (for lack of a better word) for select terminals. The result was a quirky and interesting face at display sizes. However, at small sizes, as ink bleed starts to take over, the angles disappear in favor of the overall forms (rounded bowls, etc.) and the 'faux-humanist' effects start to mimic modulation found in more traditional, modulated text faces. While it is hardly a true text face, the result is surprising legibility at text sizes.

AJSHA font, even though being our newest font, is inspired by ancient Japanese and Chinese culture, eastern style of life of about 5000 years before present day, when honor and a good sword were respected. Japanese special sword Katana is known to be handcrafted to be extremely sharp and deadly. Therefore, the shapes of the AJSHA font accompanies the moves of a Katana master when he uses the power of his sword. The font comes in two styles, light and medium. Medium is a bit bolder style while the exact bold or strong version lacks due to the fact that the font's lines needed to be sharp as a swordsman's cuts. Kobely is a reproduction of a local broadcaster's real handwriting. My daughter thought her boss's handwriting was so neat and uniform, it would make a great font and asked if I would be willing to create it. I agreed. She had him write out all the basic characters, which he gladly did with both a standard ink pen and a Sharpie¨ marker. I then turned it into a three weight family, perfect for use on post-it notes, shopping and to-do lists - anywhere you need the natural feel of real handwriting. The Modesto Text Family is text in name only. It’s called Text because it has a Lower Case, and also to distinguish it from the rest of the Modesto clan. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Baily Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years.
