Mustang is a powerfully expressive brush font that combines an edgy urban aesthetic with a smooth feminine flow. Some have suggested that Mustang is romantic. Some say it has something to do with speed or freedom. While precisely what Mustang expresses is up to debate, there’s no doubt that it’s expressing it with intensity. The style was born in my high school years, when I would wreck my notebooks with multiple layers of graffiti tags which would start in the margins and then creep in to cover the entire page. I developed a sensibility towards a very fast, expressive use of my hand, which later easily and naturally translated into brush. I used this style typographically on several projects throughout the years, and even turned it into a signature illustration style. Mustang is the second font, after Streetbrush, to use this brushwork as its inspiration. Mustang will be especially evocative at large sizes, where the details and sharpness of the shapes really come to life. It also holds together well for use as body copy, but may lose some of its aesthetic integrity at really small sizes.

It certainly would look solid, but did we have to add cracks and rubble so it would resemble rocks? We didn’t think so. We decided to tackle the problem a different way. We added corners where there usually aren’t any and threw some unusual letterforms into the mix. The result is a typeface that feels like stone, but if you look closely there is nothing inherently stony about it. Unexpected corners provide just the right amount of roughness, while unusual letterforms give the text an informal aesthetic, traces of something naive and handmade. A family was born when the sturdy letterforms were turned into a series of playful layers. With 9 fonts in total, Rocher can be mixed and matched to create unique layered compositions that add depth to the layout. Lipa is the name of the Slovenian national tree 'Linden'. The typeface Lipa Agate by Croatian designer Ermin Međedović, is part of a bigger type collection, comprising various type groups into one coherent system which Ermin developed over the past 10 years. Lipa Agate is the first to be released; a sans serif designed and engineered to be used in the smallest text sizes, best under 10pt, and in very bad printing conditions. It is perfect for phone books, classified ads, directories or any other job requiring economy without jeopardising legibility. Gutta Percha is a font for golfers. It takers its name from a hard, resilient natural substance that comes from the sap of trees grown in southeast Asia and which was used for the hard core of golf balls well into the twentieth century, when it was gradually replaced with synthetic material. It therefore seemed an appropriate name for a font using the image of a golfer of the 1920s. The letters are from our font Besley Clarendon, reduced to 70%. That means that Gutta Percha set at 40 points will have the same size letters as Besley Clarendon set at 28 points. However, it should be noted that the two fonts have different baselines. If you use them together you will have to manually adjust the vertical alignment. Gutta Percha is obviously a very specialized font, both because of the subject matter and because the uppercase is designed for use as dropped caps. There may not be many uses for it, but when it is right, it will be really right. Whether you are publishing a book about the history of golf or a clubhouse bulletin, Gutta Percha will surely be noticed.

Innova is a new design — a contribution to the tradition of grotesque typefaces. It is an attempt to improve both this genre’s legibility and versatility. Innova consists of two families: Innova and Innova Alt. The Innova family has rectangular dots. The Innova Alt family has round dots — making its personality a little friendlier. Innova is well suited for both text and display use — for graphic design, corporate identity design, magazines, newspapers, books, reports, editorials, web, advertising, signage, etc. Innova includes 16 uprights and 16 matching italics. It includes small caps, arbitrary fractions, and extensive language support. Anziano follows the direction staked out with Delicato. When creating traditional typefaces, it is inevitable to be influenced by earlier designs. Anziano does show touches of another classic typeface – Weiss (by Emil Rudolf Weiss, 1926). Weiss is often misjudged and overlooked. Perhaps the most well known Swedish typeface – Berling (by Karl-Erik Forsberg, 1914–1995) is actually based largely on Weiss. MRF have appreciated the design of Weiss uprights for a long time. When Stefan Hattenbach bought the first Swedish edition of The Lord of the Rings (1959–61), in 2004, he was amazed by the excellent flow of the text presented on each page. Despite the very original character that Weiss has, it was a pleasure to read a book set in such a typeface. MRF realized that several major foundries had already done interpretations of Weiss, more or less true to the original. MRF didn’t want to add on to that list! Instead Stefan tried to find his own path. Anziano consists of three core styles, Regular, Italic and Bold; each with small caps, ornaments, stylistic ligatures, and extended Latin accents. Lining, tabular, oldstyle and smallcap numerals help round out Anziano’s typographic range and function.

It is part of the research project Crónicas Visuales del Abya Yala by designer Vanessa A. Zúñiga Tinizaray. — The Tinkuy Patterns. The Tinkuy Patterns system is divided into six files containing a total of more than 2650 modules that can be combined together creating an infinite range of possibilities. The digitization of the typeface family has been carried out by Ale Paul, through the Sudtipos foundry. Weekly: a slab serif that wants to be a sans. The font was created under the premise that it can be used as a sans: a fresh design without that retro feel typical of slab fonts. As a result, we developed an Egyptienne font—more simple compared to others of its kind, a feature that gives it its unique personality. Weekly was based on fonts with humanist proportions, such as ‘Oficina’ and ‘Caecilia’, both created in the ’90s. Typefaces like these give designers the possibility to use them in books or magazines, in contrast to geometric slab fonts or early 20th century fat faces, which are mainly used for advertising or display text. Another feature that reminds us of humanist sans fonts is the small difference between x-height and cap-height. Some characters in Weekly like ‘a’ or ‘g’ lack serifs and some like ‘c’ or ’s’ have short serifs, giving it a semi-serif air. Weekly comes in both light and heavy weights. Early in my career as a graphic designer I purchased a book on Japanese packaging. With it, I came to notice that Japanese characters used mostly a modicum of strokes. This font was my attempt at trying to balance the familiarity of a Latin alphabet with the unfamiliarity of Kanji and Kana. It was more of a typographical challenge than usual; since going too much in either direction would defeat the purpose. I would like to think that, for the most part, I got the balance right. Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. Tokoloshe is a name in African mythology for a mischievous leprechaun-like figure that loves practical jokes and tricking people. There are many books of such African stories, for example Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz. The letter shapes that I used in the Tokoloshe font have inspiration from two sources: -- the spiky character of the font was derived from the wonderfully imaginative, wooden carvings of the Makonde people of beings called "shetani". The word "tokoloshe" is used by other tribes, but from his behaviour, he is certainly a type of shetani. -- some of the letter shapes were informed by Art Deco styles of fonts, for example: Kunjani, Black Tie SF, Selznick Normal, Zaire SF, Binner Gothic and ITC Anna. But the Tokoloshe font, like its namesake, is much more freespirited. Use this font whenever you want to suggest the rich artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of Africa. Ciseaux was inspired and is dedicated to the art of paper cutting. Early paper cutting artists were often royalty, but it soon became a folk art practiced by commoners whose cutouts decorated their homes. By the seventeenth century it had spread throughout the world. The Japanese called it Mon-kiri, the German's Scherenschnitte and Turkey even boasted a guild devoted to the art form. In Poland the designs were traditionally symmetrical and often used layers of colors to form pictorial collages. When Russian invaders confiscated scissors, villagers were found to cut their intricate designs with sheep shears! The art form later developed into cutting out elaborate designs of nature scenes and people, celebrating special occasions and even decorating legal documents. Ciseaux letterforms mimic paper cutting art in its shapes with a rather loose and almost joyous rhythm. The overall effect is somewhat earthy and natural yet it has an element of sophistication that cannot be ignored.
