Konrad Kachelhofen was a printer in the city of Leipzig beginning around 1483. He printed many works by contemporary authors and also many of the classics. He acquired an unusually large amount of typefaces for his shop, a place that included a wine bar and book store. This particular face is based on the Typ.8:170G GfT101 Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke. He probably died in 1529 after passing his business on to his son-in-law Melchior Lotter.

Mandatory is a full small caps font developed from the typeface used for UK vehicle registration plates. There is improved stroke separation on the M and W which are pointed at the centre, and the tail of the Q is thinner and clearer.

The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. It is contemporary designer type, made from the struck steel hammers of an art deco san serif face transferred from a mechanical 1926 Royal Portable typewriter. It has an obsessively complete commercial roman character set ––for the pre-opentype environment of the late 1990's. Yes, it has that great “Monopoly Game” question mark -- and all on a period-piece typewriter! You should have no trouble grafting that sorely needed Euro symbol.” –And he very well did!

Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. He reportedly exchanged many gifts of respect with Saladin, even though the two kings were on different sides of the Crusades. Lionheart comes in all popular font formats, with some alternates placed in accessible cells of the character set.

Based on a popular design of the 50s-60s, Sandcastle JNL has the retro-casual charm of many prints ads of that era. It lends itself well to headlines, price tags, announcements, name plates and just about anything that recreates the mid-century panache.

This font was inspired by the Cancellaresca pattern (look at our 1491 Cancellaresca and 1610 Cancellaresca), in particular Spanish one, from Francisco Lucas, who was working in the late 1500s. It is a modern variation, including West European accented characters and a lot of initial and final alternates (not in the Mac TT version for technical reasons).

Willow font was designed by Tony Forster, a fanciful font in the Viennese Secessionist style. The work of Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired this condensed sans serif typeface with its rough edges and selection of alternate and ligature characters. The Germany No.1 design was derived from authentic antique German stencil-plates. » pdf specimen « Surprisingly these stencil-plates offer a high contrast Didot design very similar to the French stencils produced and sold till today. The production time of these stencils is in the range of the German imperial period (1871‒1918). Of course the usage period was even longer. The font styles PAINT and SKETCH include 4 additional variations of base glyphs and figures. An extensive random function will mix the glyphs as you type - on proper OpenType-savvy apps like Adobe InDesign only. All styles offer an extended Latin character set.

Glodok is a single-weight display typeface. It is bold, heavy and fun to play around with. It’s eye catching but also blends well when in use. It is retro-inspired and strikes a nice balance between formal and playful. The name itself comes from the oldest Chinatown in Jakarta that is also considered the biggest in Indonesia, the place from where the designer took many inspirations.

The first Century typeface was cut in 1894 by Linn Boyd Benton in conjunction with T L DeVinne for the Century Magazine. It was a blacker, more readable face than the type previously used. Morris Fuller Benton designed the Century Expanded version in 1900 for American Type Founders to meet the Typographical Union Standard of the day. The 'expansion' was in the vertical plane. Century Expanded is a useful font family for text setting in magazines, books, presentations and newsletters.

Comicraft first created this font, based on the unique European lettering style of Ladronn, for the Marvel X-book CABLE in 1998. It was later upgraded for THE INHUMANS mini-series, and modified again for the HIP FLASK mini-series in 2002. Franko Luin, Odense's designer, on this typeface: With Odense I entered the field where Optima reigns in royal majesty. The first question I received was, in fact, why I designed another Optima. Look closely: Odense has as much in common with Optima as Garamond with Baskerville. Am I right? Odense Neon is a special variant that can be used for logos or single words. I had the idea for it when I noticed that the neon tubes in a sign over a store only partially followed the characters. The name comes from the Danish town Odense, the town of the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, author of, e.g., 'The Little Mermaid.' Odense is also the place where the first book in the Nordic countries was printed, the 'Breviarium Ottoniense', in 1482.

Estencil was inspired by the use of stencil fonts used as text knocked out of steel plates. Not suitable for long text, it works well for display, signage, and wayfinding applications., maintaining legibility from a distance. It includes the Western European character set, with 251 glyphs.

A solid calligraphic letter designed by John Matt in the middle 1960s. The typeface did not see use until Compugraphic copied a set of the sketches in the late 1970s, naming the result Garth Graphic in honor of Bill Garth, late president and founder.

An extremely versatile, intelligently restrained design by Robin Nicholas for Monotype in 1980. It works very well at small sizes thanks to its large x-height, sturdy serifs, and lack of ornament; yet it is not characterless. Nimrod has been used successfully in national newspapers and books. (The Guardian, London, from its late-1980s redesign until it was replaced by a Carter interpretation of Miller in 1998; the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in the typographically unsurpassed 1990 edition.)

Secombe is a lively fun family of typefaces in the spirit of the turn of the last century. It's a boisterous fun design, named in honor of the late Harry Secombe (or if you prefer, Neddy Seagoon). Secome is a family of two 'small capitals' display faces, offered in a regular solid form and the 'Grande' form, engraved and shadowed. Ideal for posters, book covers and any other design work where a feel of the 1900s is needed.

This in-yer-face kinda face is based on a broad brush font from "The New ABC of Showcard & Ticketwriting" by C. Milne, published in Australia in the late 1930s. Brought to my attention by Ms. Kat Black, and named in honor of Ms. Kat's grannie, to whom the book originally belonged. The Postscript and Truetype versions contain a complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252); in addition, the Opentype version supports Unicode 1250 (Central European) languages as well.

Handmade Caslon JNL is a somewhat imperfect version of one of the many Caslon faces in use during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Based on vintage source material, Handmade Caslon JNL is the right typeface for projects reflecting antiquity, a hand-made look or where slightly imperfect lettering adds a bit of the "real world" to the message.

My font takes inspiration from repeating firearms of the mid- to late 18th Century; their sleek and elegant appearance contrasts with their rigidity and simplicity are what I attempted to implement within the font itself. I imagined the font being used for logos, titles and other forms of large text as the font looks best when its finer details can be made out.
