Dante was designed by Giovanni Mardersteig. Mardersteig started work on Dante after the Second World War when printing at the Officina Bodoni returned to full production. He drew on his experience of using Monotype Bembo and Centaur to design a new book face with an italic which worked harmoniously with the roman. Originally hand-cut by Charles Malin, Dante was adapted for mechanical composition by Monotype in 1957. The new digital font version has been re drawn, by Monotype's Ron Carpenter, free from any restrictions imposed by hot metal technology. The Dante font family was issued in 1993 in a range of three weights with a set of titling capitals. Hand drawn serif typeface designed for one of our books. You can use just the regular style or set the fill style over the stroke style to get a more colorful version. It has upper and lowercase characters with up to three alternate glyphs. Build in OpenType Contextual Alternates feature will automatically set alternate glyphs depending on frequency of appearance of the same character (even in web font but only in HTML5 browsers). The script doesn’t throw random glyphs (so it won't break the layered, two colored version). For example in the word “HIPPOPOTAMUS” you will automatically get three different “P” glyphs and two “O” glyphs. It really works great but of course you can always fine tune it by hand. Mr Anteater has younger sister. Mrs Ant was designed for side notes in the same book.

The font is based on an alphabet from a mid1920s art deco book. The original seemed to have tapering strokes but it was too small to be sure; I made all strokes parallel & orthogonal and slightly modified the original in a number of other ways to bring it into the 21st Century. The designers of the original were Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring. Nocturne has all the elegance of the Deco fonts of the 1930s. It recalls the romantic, sophisticated Zeitgeist of the early 20th century, that nostalgic time "between the wars". Nocturne comes in two styles: Nocturne Regular, which uses the Art Deco convention of small x height, and long ascenders. This style is perfect for headers, posters, labels etc. Nocturne Book, which, with its higher x height and slightly wider characters, is extremely legible and suitable for small size text.

John Seddon (1644-1700), was a famous English writing master, the leading calligrapher of his time, and master of Sir John Johnson’s Free Writing School in Priest’s Court, Foster Lane. His portrait was drawn by William Faithorne and was engraved by John Sturt as the frontispiece for his copy-books, such as ‘The Ingenious youth’s companion’ of c.1690 and 'The pen-man’s paradise' of c.1695. INTRODUCTION When I started the first Selfie back in 2014 I was aware that I was designing something innovative at some point, because at that time there were not too many, (if any) fonts which rescued so many calligraphy features being at the same time a monolinear sans. I took inspiration from the galerías’ neon signs of my home city, Buenos Aires, and incorporated the logic and ductus of the spencerian style. The result was a very versatile font with many ligatures, swashes and a friendly look. But… I wasn’t cognizant of how successful the font would become! Selfie is maybe the font of my library that I see the most when I finally go out, (type-designers tend to be their entire lives glued to a screen), when I travel, and also the font that I mostly get emails about, asking for little tweaks, new capitals, new swashes. Selfie was used by several renowned clients, became part of many ‘top fonts of the year’ lists and was published in many magazines and books about type-design. These recognitions were, at the same time, cuddles for me and my Selfie and functioned as a driving force in 2020 to start this project which I called Selfie Neue. THE FONT "Selfie for everything" Selfie Neue, because it’s totally new: All its glyphs were re-drawn, all the proportions changed for better, and the old and somehow naive forms of the first Selfie were redesigned. Selfie Neue is now a family of many members (you can choose between a Rounded or a Sharp look), from Thin to Black, and from Short to Tall (because I noticed the feel of the font changed notoriously when altering its proportions). It also includes swashy Caps, which will serve as a perfect match for the lowercase and some incredibly cute icons/dingbats (designed by the talented Melissa Cronenbold, see also Selfie Neue Rounded for more!) which, as you see in the posters, make the font even more attractive and easy to use. You'll find tons of alternates per glyph. It's impossible to get tired with Selfie! Like it happened with the old Selfie, Selfie Neue Sharp was thought for a really wide range of uses. Magazines, Book-covers, digital media, restaurants, logos, clothing, etc. Hey! The font is also a VF (Variable Font)! So you can have fun with its two axes: x-height and weight, in applications that support them. Let me take a New Sharp Selfie! TECHNICAL If you plan to print Selfie Neue VF (Rounded or Sharp), please remember to convert it to outlines first. The majority of the posters above have the "contextual" alternates activated, and this makes the capitals a little smaller. I'd recommend deactivating it if you plan to use Selfie for just one word. Use the font always with the "fi" feature activated so everything ligatures properly. The slant of the font is 24,7 degrees, so if you plan to have its stems vertical, you may use Selfie with that rotation in mind. THANKS FOR READING

Imagine being printer in the early nineteenth century, your stock isn’t the finest, your lead characters are worn out: Voilá Kandidat Rough. But wait, Kandidat isn’t the usual scan-an-old-book,-put-the-glyphs-in-a-font-and-you’re-done-font. Kandidat Rough has a variety of whopping 14 alternates for most characters. Our algorithm changes the letters automatically. All you have to do is turn on Contextual Alternates in your layout app. The algorithm is the best we’ve seen so far, and it’s so good that even same words appear in different forms. And should by coincidence words have the same glyphs, just assign a different Style Set to the first letter, and all other letters in the word will change as well (well, it depends a bit on your software). The mechanism isn’t perfect and maybe we stretched OpenType capabilities a bit over the top, but we yet haven’t seen any better routine for switching letters on the fly. Is it worth to mention that Kandidat Rough not only speaks English, but also German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Croatian, Turkish and most likely some other languages? Maybe. All neatly kerned. All in all a great repertoire for even the most demanding book or advert jobs with a look of old times. And now imagine you are sick of the rugged print experience Kandidat Rough delivers: go for Kandidat. This is our Scotch-ish ancestor the Rough version was made from. A sturdy, friendly, round, warm friend from the beginning of the nineteenth century. A bit dark, maybe. You will like it. Kandidat has the aforementioned type set plus complete Baltics, Eastern Europe and Cyrillic. Plus a couple of gimmicks like fleurons, stars, circled numbers, arrows, and, and, and… Kandidat Regular additionally has small caps for Latin based scripts (not Cyrillic). The spick and span Kandidat font set also consists of Regular, Italic and Bold cuts. The bold cut is on the very bold side and can nicely be used for headings, whereas Italic is a great companion for Regular. It took us some time and trouble to finish this project, but after all we are very proud of our little feat and hope you will enjoy Kandidat as much as we do. Enjoy!

This handsome Geometric Antique serif design is based on the early 19-century Moderns and Scotch styles, infused with the warm charm of traditional antique, added for interest. Thomas Jefferys (ca. 1710–1771) was the best-known map maker in 18th-century England, chiefly because he won (and hyped) the title “Geographer to King George III.” Jefferys was really more an engraver/publisher than a geographer, since he mostly relied on the cartographic materials of others. Still, his maps of the North American colonies were well known. Geographica is a legible, four-style serif family modeled after the neat hand-lettered place names and peripheral text on Jefferys’s maps. With its long serifs, tall x-height, and robust curves, Geographica somehow combines classic elegance with a whiff of coastline and sea. The italic styles have the slant and warmth of the hand-drawn source materials. And the typeface comes with a slew of distinctive map-based ornaments—including compass wheels and sailing ships. This evocative serif works well in both display situations and long blocks of text, whether on paper or screen. OpenType features include small capitals, numerous ligatures, and two stylistic sets of titling caps. Geographica offers full support for Central and Eastern European languages—more than 1,200 glyphs in all.

PF Bague Slab Pro draws its inspiration from early 20th century slabs and was designed as a companion to Bague Sans, a versatile monoline typeface with a distinct and eye-catching personality. Following its predecessor’s design guidelines, it overcomes the monotonous and mechanical rigidity of early geometrics by introducing subtle variations in stroke width and semi-wedge serifs rather than square slabs. These striking serifs, along with a mixture of attractive letterforms, exude a strong, modern and energetic personality at display sizes. On the other hand, at small sizes these distinct characteristics become subtle and the simplistic geometric personality of the typeface comes in place to offer a highly readable text. Oscar Niemeyer is one of the greatest architects of our time—his unique way of mixing straight lines and abstract curves gives rise to an unmistakable and characteristic style. This typeface is my own tribute to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The design process started when my wife and I visited Brazil while she was running a series of workshops on calligraphy. In my spare time, I would walk through the streets of beautiful cities like Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, enjoying the local architecture and urban life. I had also the opportunity to attend to some of the workshops during which I was able to observe the organic of calligraphy and people. Then, I started to draw some shapes that reflected everything about this beautiful place: Niemeyer’s architecture and work and, in his own words ‘the curves on the body of the beloved woman’. This versatile typeface comes in 8 weights with matching italics, alternative characters, oldstyle figures and much more! Niemeyer is well-suited for logotypes, advertising, publishing, branding and corporate use. As if gliding in on the tide, ITC Kahana floats across the page with the pulse and sway of the sacred Hawaiian hula dance. The original drawings for this display typeface were created while designer Teri Kahan lived in the Aloha State, and its bold verticals symbolically convey the power and strength of the Polynesian people. Kahan has spent most of her life working with letters. She discovered Speedball lettering pens in her teens, opened a design studio that specialized in the lettering and calligraphic arts while in her early twenties, and grew her business in California and Hawaii. Today, she embraces new design challenges and digital technology, but letters are still at the core of her work. In ITC Kahana, Kahan created a design that is both distinctive and versatile. Menus, posters, display headlines, packaging and brochures fall easily within this typeface's range. And the word “kahana” is more than just a namesake: in Hawaiian, “kaha” means “to mark, draw, place, turn or surf,” and “na” means “belonging to.” ITC Kahana also includes an enchanting decorated alphabet in the lowercase position that expands this typeface's usefulness to the designer.

Born in 1831, Hermann Berthold was the son of a calico-printer. On completion of his apprenticeship as a precision-instrument maker and after practical experience gained abroad in galvanography, Hermann Berthold founded his "Institute for Galvano Technology" in Berlin in 1858. Very quickly he discovered a method of producing circular lines from brass and not, as customary at that time, from lead or zinc. The soldering normally necessary could also be dispensed with. The lines were elastic and therefore highly durable. They produced outstandingly fine results. Most of German's letterpress printers and many printers abroad placed their orders with Berthold. His products became so popular that the print trade popularized the saying "As precise as Berthold brass". In 1878 Hermann Berthold was commissioned to put an end to the confusion of typographic systems of measurement. With the aid of Professor Foerster he succeeded in devising a basic unit of measurement (1m = 2,660 typographic points). This was the birth of the first generally binding system of typographic measurement. It is still used in the trade. Hermann Berthold served as the head of the Berthold type foundry until 1888.

A tessellation is a shape that can be used to completely fill the plane—simple examples are isosceles triangles, squares, and hexagons. (Earlier tessellation fonts from IngrimayneType, the TessieDingies fonts, lack a black or filled version so cannot do colored patterns. The addition of a solid style that must be colored makes these new fonts a bit more difficult to use but offers far greater possibilities in getting visually interesting results.)

The birth of the monospaced types dates back to the past. There was a need for the creation of typesets for typewriters. The difficulty was to align the different glyphs in the same width. This led to particular problems with letters like “M” and “l”; the former seemed to be squeezed into the same width of all letters and the second one appeared way too streched. Despite – or perhaps because of – the impression of the typewriter is still popular with Graphic Designers. Nowadays there are even monospaced versions of primarily proportional types; for example the the Sans Mono designed by Lucas de Groot or the DIN Mono. Then again, why not the other way round?! In the first half of the Nineties, Erik Spiekermann developed a proportional type named ITC Officina based on the Letter Gothic. According to a survey on the 100 best fonts of all time conducted by FontShop, ITC Officina is in an eighth place, far ahead of its forerunner. This was the reason for me to create a wider design with a Serif and a Sans Serif based on the queen of all monospaced types – the Courier.

Nature is fond of stripes. Animals have them, plants have them and the rainbow has them. Besides being beautiful, stripes in nature have various origins and functions. But only Homo sapiens gave them symbolic meaning. In the American flag, the 13 stripes symbolize the 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain. In the French “Tricolour” flag, they represent Paris and the king of France. And in Russia’s “Georgiyevskaya lenta,” they symbolize the death and resurrection of St. George, the dragon-slayer. The font family COLORADO , named after the beautifully striped Colorado potato beetle, can be used to construct all kinds of symbolic or just beautiful messages. And thankfully, you need no OpenType diploma to do this. To get your texts multi-striped and multicolored, follow this simple procedure: Write the message with one of the COLORADO fonts and apply a color. Then copy and paste in place, and apply a second font and color. Repeat this again if wanted – and the masterpiece is done. COLORADO ’s language support covers about 100 languages. It has a Western European, a Central European and an Extended Cyrillic character set.

Densit is a display mega black typeface, containing 6 styles. It aims for a ultimate density with a maximum weight on a minimum place. Glyphs therefore balances on a slim border of touch.
