Since 1997, The Washington Post’s iconic headlines have been distinguished by their own sturdy, concise variation on Bodoni, designed by Matthew Carter. For the 2009 redesign, Richard Lipton, Jill Pichotta, and Dyana Weissman expanded the family with more refined Display and Condensed styles for use in larger sizes. Yuli is my daughter - she was born on February 13th, 2014. I named this font after her, because there are some similarities. Both are bouncy and happy, playful and quirky, funny and happy - and above all: cute and cuddly. Yuli font was loosely based on Bodoni and Spumoni - two typefaces I like a lot. Yuli speaks a lot of languages.

Oscar Guerrero found inspiration for Vala in shop window lettering near his home in Bogotá, Colombia. “The capital A, R and V caught my attention and I photographed the window for future reference,” he explains. “Later I started to draw more letters inspired by the ones in the window.” Guerrero admits that he has always admired the work of Giambattista Bodoni and allowed his classic Didone designs to infuse Vala. Striking contrast in stroke weights, lively ball-terminals and a large x-height give Vala the grace and force of a Waikiki wave. Not satisfied with just a basic character set, Guerrero also took advantage of OpenType’s capabilities and drew a complete set of swash capitals, a bevy of fancy ligatures, and a suite of lowercase alternative designs. The result is that Vala easily emulates custom lettering in posters, headlines and logotypes. The “romantic” part of Vala? Guerrero dedicated the design to his girlfriend, Valentina, and named it after her.

Excelsia Pro Script is a beautiful narrow script designed in the tradition of Bodoni and Fournier, it has lots of variations. There are for example seven different versions for the uppercase letters that can be accessed with opentype savy software. different ampersands, @-signs, Th combinations, lots of different lowercase letters and so on. Column Sans, talking about space efficiency. The character set that condensed can maximize the use of limited space without losing good legibility aspects. The typeface is very appropriate to be used as a text in a small column widths, display text, caption, title, author credit on the film, etc. Column Sans is available in OpenType format in the three weights Light, Regular, and Bold, whereby there are corresponding italics for all variants. In the same narrow italic versions, the "a" has a closed form while the "f" has a descender. Besides of standard ligature, this typeface is also equipped with some additional ligature and deligature like "fr", "tt", "cb", "ch", "ck" and so on as well as three "stylistic ligature": "the", "Mr" and "Mrs". Inspired by an old Russian book about Moscow’s plan to take over the world, this font was designed to give digital prints the taste of hand lettering. It’s vivid outlines and slight differences in boldness between characters give it an accurate and realistic imperfect letterpress look. It works amazingly well as a text font in small sizes and shows it’s crippled outlines only at larger sizes. »CA Moskow has a plan« has got an extensive character-set including Russian Cyrillic, the Russian Rubel and the Turkish Lira sign. Although it includes kerning, for a full simulation of letterpress print and cold-war feeling we recommend to turn it off.

Hardbop is a typographic system inspired by jazz, especially the style it's named after "Hardbop". It's also inspired by the prolific graphic work of Reid Miles for the covers of Blue Notes Records in the '50s, Japanese jazz album covers of the '70s and condensed and grotesque hand painted signs. Hardbop also references classic fonts such as Impact, Bebas, Din, Frontage and TT Trailers, the latter in the exaggeration of certain characteristics such as counterforms and endings. Hardbop design works for titles and wide spaces and was specially designed for covers and posters, where its intention is not to go unnoticed. Although it is a small family, it allows game possibilities with a wide set of characters. Enjoy!

Soerabaja is the old Dutch spelling of Surabaya, an important trading port city in East Java (Indonesia). This all caps art deco font was based on old colonial posters I found, plus a sprinkling of my imagination. It seems I have a weak spot for Art Deco fonts named after Indonesian cities - partly because the country has always interested me and partly because my wife’s family is from Indonesia. Soerabaja is quite an elegant font, so use it for your book titles, restaurant menus and whatever else you can come up with.

Fournier was made by Monotype in 1924. The design is based on types cut by Pierre Simon Fournier circa 1742, some of the most influential designs of the eighteenth century. Fournier's types were among the earliest of the transitional" style of typeface and were a stepping stone to the more severe "modern" style made popular by Bodoni later in the century. They had more vertical emphasis than the old style types, greater contrast between thick and thin strokes and little or no bracketing on the serifs. Fournier has a light, clean look on the page, provides good economy in text and retains an even colour.

"Saint Petersburg" fonts were created to look as close to a natural handwritten script as possible by including over 20 ligatures. Cut as a private version for the Nonesuch Press in the early 1930s, Monotype Bulmer was first released for general use in 1939. Based on types, cut by William Martin circa 1790, used by the Printer, William Bulmer, in a number of prestigious works, including Boydell's Shakespeare. Martins types combined beauty with functionality. Narrower and with a taller appearance than Baskerville, it anticipated the modern face of Bodoni but retained vital qualities from the old face style. This new digital version of the Bulmer font family was drawn by Monotype following extensive research into the previous hot metal versions and a study of Bulmer's printed works. Additional weights have been designed together with a wide range of Expert and alternative characters.

The combination of some Bodoni extra-wide wood type letters and an image redrawn from a 1940s package label from the long-defunct Railway Express Agency form the characters in Letter Delivery JNL. TDL Ruha Crown is a decorative, modern and mechanical display typeface and it results from the development of the stencil RUHA. Being the first typeface of the family, sets the basic concepts to be developed further, on each version to come. There is an rigid geometrical connection with the Roman du Roi design approach, since the letterforms are imposed by the constraints of the RUHA ruler. Petale is my new elegant experimental typeface I'd love to present. At the beginning, I was intended to create a bold wide font, I started sketching options and came out with the letter 'M' design first. I thought it may be interesting and had continued developing the style with letters N, O, etc., spending hours on some letters to match the design and my vision. I liked how it looked (especially digits) and added different weighs. And it came out pretty stylish. Claremont is a serif font family designed by Les Usherwood (Typsettra). Usherwood originally created four weights – a light, extra bold, light italic, and extra bold italic. Paul Hickson (P&P Hickson) and Steve Jackaman (ITF) digitized the family and created eight new weights, and it was released exclusively for the Red Rooster Collection in 1993. Claremont shares similarities to Bookman Old Style, but also shares properties with slab serif Egyptian-style typefaces. Craw Modern was designed by Freeman Craw in 1958 and first released by The American Typefounders Company, (ATF). In typography, 'Modern' is a style of typeface (classification) developed in the late 18th century that continued through much of the 19th century. Characterized by high contrast between thick and thin strokes and flat serifs. Bodoni is among the most popular of the Moderns. Moderns are also known as Didone and New Antiqua.

Didot LP is a very elegant rendition of the 18th-century French typeface -- Didot. This design took the earlier Italian neo-classical model (Bodoni) to a new level of refinement, with fully rationalized shapes and delicate hairlines. Didot LP accentuates these qualities, providing a classical text face with a clear and modern voice. The companion face -- Didot LP Display -- optimizes the proportions, spacing and hairlines for use at very large sizes.

Simplicity, delicacy and elegance are the words that best characterize Rufina. Based on an idea that was conceived long before its “birth”, Rufina was created from dark-text on light-background combinations. Refined and at the same time distant, Rufina seduces the viewer in a subtle and elegant manner. Blending of contrasty, Bodoni-influenced forms with the emotive touch of the calligraphers pen. This family consists of two weights, their italic counterparts, plus a set of alternate cuts — each containing a selection of illustrative ornaments.

Gastromond began about five years ago with a question: why are fat faces always based on Didot or Bodoni models? Was there a reason that the stresses of these display faces was always vertical or horizontal and never angled? It was time to find out. Gastromond is meant to blend the Renaissance stylings of the Garamond types with the Victorian outlandishness of the fat faces. The result is an emphatic take on a classic genre. Loaded with swashes and alternates, Gastromond has enough character to go around.

Based on the character shapes of Atria Bold, Blocksta is a bullish rough cut sans with extensive language support. Hopefully it won’t start another cold war.
