FONT STORY The Majestic Caps When I was on one of my visits to rare books rooms I found some large caps of Hermann Zapf, and I knew that I had to make a font inspired by these. I was surprised that no one had ever made them into a font. They were some of the most beautiful caps I had ever seen. These caps were surprisingly difficult to make. I thought it would take me a week or two; to get the detail and spirit right took significantly longer– but it was well worth the effort! When you print Hermanz Titling on a page, you will see what I mean. Even when printed digitally, it’s the closest thing to letterpress. You might even have some people thing it was printed by a traditional method with ink! (Note: Unless printed at very large sizes, this font is not recommended for actual letterpress, because the serifs are too thin.) Honeybird originated in a study of calligraphic fonts of the 20th century, took its own direction and developed into a slightly quirky, very readable contemporary script font, typical of Anton Scholtz's free-wheeling style. The exaggerated upper case characters create an exuberance, while the small lower case characters maintain the impression of restrained order with flashes of quirky contrast. Honeybird has 45 OpenType ligatures, designed to ensure the smooth flow of the text.

German type designer Yanone created this FontFont in 2013. The family has 3 weights and is ideally suited for advertising, packaging, logo, and branding as well as web and screen design. Diamond Jim JNL was inspired [in part] by an image of a 1970s Letraset® dry transfer typeface made entirely of small stars. By creating his own layout using tiny diamond shapes, Jeff Levine has produced a font that takes on multiple appearances. At 24 point it resembles dot matrix printing; at 48 point the diamonds are clearly visible; and overall, the design has a distinctive 70s retro feel. Limited character set.

It was the first restaurant where I cooked under the critical eye of my chef Gerhard Braun. ITC Eastwood is the work of British designer Martin Archer and is named for Clint Eastwood. Archer was looking for a plain oldstyle typeface with open lower case forms and used Stempel Garamond as his starting point, although the result ended up well beyond its origins. In small point sizes the typeface looks interestingly rough while at display sizes it looks like a 16th century French typeface and its unique details come forward.

Meroe from Peter Becker: a warm script with a very dynamic touch Meroe is a warm, calligraphic script with a very dynamic touch. The many little details of the rugged stroke direction show to advantage in large font sizes. Nonetheless, Meroe is also very readable in small sizes. The font feels at home everywhere, where a personal note is required, as for example, in invitations and greetings cards , but of course also in packaging design.

Massive text suits my Only Kidding very well. Even at small sizes it is super legible, and it really keeps that handmade image. At larger sizes the crunchiness really comes forward and may surprise you how detailed edges the letters has got! I am going to use this font for one of my children's books - I am thinking something adventure-ish! What you think? Comes with fi and fl ligatures and double letter substitutions!
