Tucked inside the November 5, 1927 issue of a German signpainters' trade paper was a single sheet headed Der Schilder und Schriftenmaler, which featured an alphabet called "Neue Fraktur". An exuberant (if somewhat unconventional) combination of Art Deco sensibilities and blackletter forms, the font retains its freshness, even today. Included in this version are Deco bishops fingers at the bar and broken bar positions, and a styling, horn-blowing herald at ASCII circumflex and tilde positions. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Jarvis is a hybrid. Not a pure grotesque, not a humanist sans, but the best of both worlds. Its open counters and strong geometry, coupled with smooth curves and features give it a unique personality. Very legible even at small sizes, instantly recognisable at large sizes, it is an ideal candidate for corporate identity as well as print and digital communications of all kind. Its wide range of weights (from Thin to Black), extensive OpenType features, circled numbers, and extended character-set are the hallmark of the highest technical level.

Karben 105 is inspired by the classic, no nonsense DIN, and has a form that follows its highly legible function. Based on a lozenge, it has a clean and pure geometry with even stroke weights. Karben 105 is available in a family of five weights, and is also available with character variations as Karben 205. There are also monospaced variants of both Karben 105 and Karben 205 and a stencil version. All of the Karben fonts feature an extended character set, including accented characters for Central European languages.

Dungeon is a glyphic font family that combines elements of both sans serif and spur serif typefaces. It was designed exclusively for the Red Rooster Collection in 1998 by Steve Jackaman (ITF). The family is loosely based on Dick Jensen’s famous design “Serpentine,” which was created for the Visual Graphics Corporation (VGC) in 1972. Dungeon is available in four weights, each of which is optimized for legibility at any size. The family’s masculine feel has helped it to turn up in a variety of projects, ranging from brand identity to advertising.

Leksa Sans is a humanist sans-serif face with some contrast. The family consists of 14 faces (upright & true italic in seven weights from Extralight to Black). Designed as a sans-serif companion for Leksa, Leksa Sans works perfectly either with it or alone. It is suitable both for text setting and for short inscriptions. One of my favorite blackletter fonts - Schwabacher - redrawn and redesigned, whereby I took care to stick to the original forms as close as possible. This font which has its roots in the 15th century represents at the most the uprising humanism in this period. To get access to all ligatures, it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures. By using the OT feature Stylistic Alternatives you get the historical German umlauts which are small e above a, o, u, A, O, and U. This font contais also oldstyle figures.

This ultrabold headline font is basically patterned after the font Nubian Black, designed by Willard T. Sniffin for American Type Founders in the 1920s, but includes an unusual inline treatment of the caps. Named for the local television show on KFJZ-TV (later KTVT) in Fort Worth, Texas, that introduced a whole new generation of kids to the Three Stooges, and hosted by the erstwhile Icky Twerp. Dalglish is a serif family with clean curves that gives the typeface a refined touch that give any headline an elegant appearance, with both modern and vintage curves. Impact wide was developed from the designer's original drawings for the production of 'Impact' metal type, with many detail changes because of the density of the letters. These include the restoration of the bevelled i and j dots of the original. Character maps show some useful alternative characters in both roman and italic. Included are a crossbar numeral 1, mirror quotes and some sorts which were cast in metal but never reproduced in digitized versions of the typeface. There is also a font-specific Euro symbol. (Impact is a trademark of The Type Museum, London).

Marazion takes its name from a Cornish seaside resort in the UK's West Country. It was inspired by some hand lettering I came across at a local inn on the seafront where I was enjoying a lunchtime pint (always a good place to seek inspiration in my experience!) Being based on a hand drawn script Marazion is a smooth, fluid and rounded font that is both fresh and distinctive. Personally, I think it is well suited to applications in food and fashion, but in practice its uses are more or less universal.

Bamberforth is a new take on the type of lettering that was often seen on Railway timetables, share certificates and anything else that needed a distinctive heading in the mid-19th Century. This sort of thing was used on both sides of the Atlantic and can carry us back to another time. Bamberforth aims to give a modern clarity to a style of lettering that, in all other particulars, harks straight back to Victorian times. Bamberforth is ideal for giving anything a 19th century feel-especially posters, book headings, dust jackets and invitations.

The Teapot Dome scandal was a 1920s bribery scandal involving Secretary of the Interior Albert Bacon Fall. Fall leased Navy petroleum reserves at Teapot Dome in Wyoming [along with some California reserves] at low rates with no competitive bidding. The San Francisco Examiner for Feb. 20, 1924 ran the two line headline “U.S. Senator Named as Oil Stock Speculator; Whitney to Face Quiz Today on Slush Fund”. The headline was set in a condensed, slightly squared sans serif typeface. This is now available as Special Edition JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The original sheet music for Ted (Is Everybody Happy?) Lewis’ signature tune, When My Baby Smiles at Me, inspired this whimsical wonder. The sheet music was discovered in the Library of Congress American Memory Collection, an incredible online resource. The typeface gets its name from a slightly loony early 1900s comic strip by Fontaine Fox. This new and improved version has beefed-up outlines, so it renders well even at smaller sizes. Both versions contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Big Jim Roberts was my dad. A dedicated family man who taught us about faith, values and love is missed by our family. Jim just about did it all. He was a military man, a police officer, a power company engineer and a photographer. This typeface (which is comprised of a bold lower-case alphabet) has a 70s retro feel. Jim might have like it. The French publication “La Lettre Dans le Decor et La Publicite Modernes” (“The Letter in the Modern Décor and Advertising”) was a 24-page booklet showcasing the then-current trends of the time (circa late 1930s-early 1940s). On one page was found a squared, extra bold sans serif alphabet set with strong Art Nouveau influences, yet it was ahead of its time by taking on the look and feel of 1980s techno typography. A biscuit and a cup of coffee, a biscuit and a cup of tee ... both are obvious - but what about a biscuit and a glass of juice? I loved that combination as a kid (and I even crumbled the biscuit in the juice...yuck...I wouldn't do that today!!! Anyway, here you have a legible uppercase font with a nice handmade look. “Tropical Type” was Alf Becker’s 148th submission to “Signs of the Times” magazine (a publication for the sign trade) where for years Becker would provide a monthly lettering design to inspire other sign writers. An interesting hand lettered example of Art Deco lettering (minus the letter ‘L’) was spotted on Pinterest and served as the inspiration for Deco Sketch JNL. Because there was no attribution as to the age or source of the alphabet, it can only be surmised that it was a scan from a 1930s or 1940s source. The original showed many of the irregularities of pen lettering, and had rounded terminals. The digital version has been redrawn more uniformly with flat terminals. Deco Sketch JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Jazm is an Arabetic typeface design with connected glyphs. Jazm was the earliest, pre-Islamic, script style of the modern Arabic script, before branching into Kufi and Naskh styles. The initial script had a lot less, position-dependent shapes and ligatures, and was not strictly connected. It occasionally included minuscule dots to distinguish identical shapes. This font family design is a modern visualization by the designer of the historical Jazm letter shapes following the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph for each Arabic letter that can connect with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Jazm employs variable x-height values. It includes all required Lam-Alif ligatures and selected marks. Tatweel (or Kashida) glyph is a zero width space. Keying it before any glyph will display that glyph isolated form, if desired. Keying Tatweel before Alif Lam Lam Ha will display the Allah ligature. Jazm typeface family includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals; all required diacritic marks, in addition to Standard English keyboard punctuations and major currency symbols. Ribbon type. Holy grail of complex-lettering-turned typeface or an elusive Loch Ness monster that is often teased, possibly seen in the wild, but never confirmed? From the amazing lettering artist and author Martina Flor and masterful type designer Neil Summerour, comes the aptly named Ribbons. Ribbons is a sincere and well-conceived approach to providing a reliable solution to ribbon and ribbon-styled type for creative professionals when a lettering artist just isn’t available. Ribbons provides both flat and ‘folded’ options with the Regular and Fold styles, but then raises the bar with separate layer styles that will allow you to easily create the elegant back and forth movements produced with ribbon-style lettering we have all come to appreciate. These layer options are provided in both ‘smooth’ and ‘pleated’ connected styles. Flor and Summerour didn’t stop there. Each typeface was expanded with a number of stylistic alternates, additional swashed and flourished letters, ligatures, and even more in order to provide as many decorative options as possible to the creative. Bovary is an elegant, stylized and expressive script font inspired by those beautiful calligraphies of yesteryear, but in a modern point of view. Bovary is full of personality! When I designed it, I started from the Clauques Script. Therefore, Bovary can be perfectly combined with Clauques Sans. Bovary includes almost 900 glyphs with many stylistic variations, swashes, ending and initial forms, catchwords and ligatures for both uppercase and lowercase, assuring almost infinite combination possibilities. In addition, the font includes a set of very useful ornaments to combine and give an ornamental aspect to the calligraphic text. All our fonts are carefully controlled and tested in both aspects: readability and technical aspects. We deal with the kerning pairs, optimization of hinting information to avoid pixel grid, and the precise programming of the OpenType features; as well as drawing smooth curves points and the final touch of each glyph. Kometa Sans is a contemporary grotesk with a certain personality. She has a steady geometric skeleton, but its appearance is rather humanistic. The precise details of the artwork, the carefully drawn true italics, the six types of numerals, the variety of alternates, the broad range of open-type features and the extensive glyph set can meet most of the contemporary typographer’s demands for a neutral, but not boring type family for both long text and display use. Among the distinctive qualities of Kometa are also the forms of ligatures (both default and discretionary). They follow the natural constructive transitions between oval parts and stems, which is an advantage to mark, at least for designers who respect the beauty of clean forms. Note the specially designed Kometa Unicase sub-family, substantially enough to exist as a separate typeface. Its elegant and expressive letterforms are boosting further the power to create outstanding design work. Kometa Unicase has original and playful, yet reasonable approach to letterforms variety. Kometa has a very broad usability range – from logotypes and poster designs to corporate identities and complex editorial projects. Sihmitree is a gimmick typeface in which all glyphs have reflective (mirror) or rotational symmetry (or both). Sihmitree has two weights and is caps only, with most of the lower-case letters identical to the upper-case letters. It includes only those accented characters that are symmetrical. The letters of the alphabet are often used to explain symmetry. BCDEK are given as examples of shapes that can easily be formed with symmetry over a horizontal line. AMQTUVWY can easily be formed so that they mirror over a vertical line. Letters HIOX can be formed so they mirror over both horizontal and vertical lines, and as a result they will also have rotational symmetry. Letters NSZ can be formed so that they reproduce themselves with a rotation of 180º. That leaves letters FGJLPR, which are usually considered examples of asymmetry. However, there are script versions of J, L, and R that can be formed with symmetry, and variants of lower-case f and g can be made that are symmetrical. P looks a lot like the thorn character. Some of the numbers also present challenges when trying to form them symmetrically. The symmetrical alphabet is not stylistically harmonious and has limited use other than as an exploration of symmetry.

The Handasi type family follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style. It has one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter and one additional, final-position, glyph for each Arabic letter that is normally connected with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Handasi employs variable x-height values. Its design uses straight lines only but with variable distributed weight. Handasi fonts include all required Lam-Alif ligatures and use ligature substitutions and selected marks positioning but they do not use any other glyph substitutions or forming. Text strings composed using types of this family are non-cursive with stand-alone isolated glyphs. It employs our "natural Arabic input" method where first glyph is displayed in its non-isolated form. Tatweel (or Kashida) glyph is a zero width space. Keying it before any glyph will display that glyph isolated form. Keying it before Alif Lam Lam Ha will display the Allah ligature. Handasi family includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals, all required diacritic marks, Allah ligature, in addition to all standard English keyboard punctuations and major currency symbols. The fonts in this family support the following scripts: Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Pashtu, Kurdish, Baluchi, Kashmiri, Kazakh, Sindhi, Uyghur, Turkic, and all extended Arabic scripts.
