Have you ever wanted to set a headline within a burst, but found the drawing of all of those angles was a bit too tedious? Sales Pitch JNL solves that problem by setting letters, numbers and punctuation inside individual sections which, when typed out, generates an extended burst pattern. For a flat sided pair of end caps, use the left or right bracket keys. For burst ends, use the left or right brace keys. A blank space is located on the equal sign keystroke, and a wider blank space is on the plus sign. The source of inspiration for MFC Heathcliff Monogram is a crudely hand drawn vintage monogram transfer depicting a wider format diamond monogram. Worthington Arcade is a classically-proportioned capitals-only type incorporating a selection of ligatures and alternates. It loosely resembles the hand-painted architectural lettering of the 30s to the 50s, exemplified by the likes of Percy Smith’s interior signage for the BBC or George Mansell’s lettering for the University of London and the signs found on London’s bridges. However, rather than a slavish copy of any historical model, it is more an examination and evocation of certain idiosyncratic quirks of civic lettering of the period, and an attempt to create a peculiarly English titling typeface. The round letters, for example the O, Q and C, are wider than the perfect circle usually found in such designs, while the straight-sided characters, usually drawn on a square, are narrower. The inspiration for this font was a two-sided piece of paper. The glyphs were created by bending strips of this paper, then scanned and recreated digitally.

A tessellation is a pattern in which a shape or tile fits together with copies of itself to fill the plane with no gaps or overlaps. One type of tessellation is formed with sides of center-point rotation, that is, one half of an edge is rotated 180 degrees to form the other half. If a square template is made with sides of identical center-point rotation, there are exactly four shapes that are possible. If these shapes or tiles are fit together not edge to edge but vertex to vertex, the result is a checkerboard-like pattern of tiles and voids. However, the voids have four edges formed by the four possible shapes that the tiles can have, so the voids are limited to the same four shapes that that make up the tiles. The FabFours have 22 tile families that allow a wide variety of fascinating patterns. They form one, two, three, and four tile tessellation. Eleven of the seventeen symmetry groups can be formed with these patterns. In each tile family two of the shapes have two possible orientations, one shape has four possible orientations, and one has eight, for a total of 16 tiles. Each font has two families, one on letters A-P the other on a-p. For some of the families there are also other tiles using the same edge but using triangular and hexagonal templates. To get proper results, the leading must be set equal to the point size of the font. I discovered these fabulous families and their decorative possibilities as I was working on a book about tessellations. I have not been able to find anyone else who has written about these families of four and their decorative possibilities when arranged vertex to vertex.

Like a frail insect preserved in amber, humanist design is the "ghost in the machine" of this font, that aims at seducing the viewers with its soft, welcoming text flow, firmly opposing the rigid, formal tone of most sans serif fonts. Born to provide a useful tool to graphic designers with branding and editorial needs, Ambra Sans develops around two subfamilies with slight but fundamental differences. The display family offers a taller x-height, optimizing readability and spacing in headings and display use, while offering a single story lowercase g to provide more consistent branding usage. The text family, on the other side, goes for a smaller x-height to give more traditional proportion to the text and removes the slight tapering in the stems to provide better rendering on screen in small formats. Both subfamilies of Ambra Sans develop around a wide range of seven weights with corresponding true italics, with Ambra Display sporting an extra heavy weight for maximum versatility. In total the family counts 30 fonts, each with over 600 glyphs for a wide language coverage. Open type features and glyph alternates further enrich the usage possibility of this typeface that wants to offer contemporary designer an alternative, unexpectedly human approach to contemporary sans type, softly preserving the spirit of handmade calligraphy while encasing its frail nature in a transparent, strong and powerful design language.

Long story short: they all live happily ever after (except for the wife, who dies…). Catskin is also a nice, handmade font. I like making fairytale fonts, especially since I have three kids, who love books. And when I see one of my fonts on the cover, I can tell them: ‘daddy made this’. #prouddaddy ;-)

Abril is an extension of the Abril typographic system that was engineered as a response to a very specific requirement from the editorial design community: a low contrast typeface for head- lines. Given its broad range of styles though, Abril deserves to be considered a separate font family on its own. Based on the original text styles of Abril, the letter shapes are sturdy, very legible, and deliver a newsy and trustworthy feel. The accented editorial style of the Scotch Roman finds continuity in this new type family, but some of the details have been ironed out for improved performance in headline, both in print and on screen.
