ITC Merss proves that sometimes accidents work out just fine. Late one evening Eduardo Manso, an Argentinean graphic and type designer, spilled coffee on his desk. When he began to wipe up the mess, he noticed that one of the splashes looked like a roman letter 'l' - complete with serifs. This triggered his imagination. “What if a complete alphabet was created with this same irregular flow to the character designs?” ITC Merss was the result of Manso's experiments with “fluid” letter shapes. The oddly handsome design looks aged and spontaneous at the same time. Its irregular texture is striking-the result of careful modeling of character shapes. While Manso wanted to maintain the free-form character of spilled liquid, he also knew the individual letters had to work together with an underlying harmony. When not experimenting with typefaces - or spilled coffee - Manso creates award-winning graphic and publication designs. A contributor to the design magazine el Huevo (the Egg), he also writes articles on type and typography and is part of the publication's design team.

Mirella Script is a modern and clean approach of the classic French Bastarde script style. Anbar is an Arabetic typeface design with visually connected glyphs, named after the historical Iraqi province Anbar, which is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of the earliest Arabic script, Jazm. It follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph for each Arabic letter that can connect with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Anbar employs variable x-height values. It includes all required Lam-Alif ligatures and selected marks. Tatweel (or Kashida) glyph is a zero width space. Keying it before any glyph will display that glyph isolated form, if desired. Keying Tatweel before Alif Lam Lam Ha will display the Allah ligature. Anbar typeface family includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals; all required diacritic marks, in addition to Standard English keyboard punctuations and major currency symbols. Anbar is available in regular and italic (slated to the left) styles.

Microbrew Unicase is the latest addition to the Microbrew family, a versatile retro display family. One of the earliest fonts published by Canada Type was Tiger Script, Phil Rutter's digitization of Jaguar, Georg Trump's 1967 wild calligraphic brush face. In 2010, when the font was revisited for an update, it was shown that it too light for applications under 24 pt, and too irregular for applications over 64 pt. So the face was redigitized from scratch. This new digitization brings a more seamless contour and a much steadier stroke, and much better outlines for use at both extremes of scaling. Language support was also greatly expanded, and many alternates and ligatures were added to the redigitized character set. The name was also changed to Trump Script, to better reflect the origins of the design. Trump Script is a master calligrapher's hand producing very uncommon jolts and bursts of sharpness. It showcases some of the most suprising letter forms ever drawn, like the very unique treatments of B, K, W, Y and Z. In the lowercase one can see the cattiest g ever made, and some of the wildest shapes in the f, j, p, y and z. Trump Script comes in all popular formats. The TrueType and PostScript packages are comprised of two fonts. The OpenType version, Trump Script Pro, combines both fonts into one, and includes features for intelligent substitution in software that supports advanced typography. Hieronymus Andreae or latter in life Hieronymus Formenschneider as he proudly took a new surname to proclaim his success in the printing industry as the man who introduced the Fraktur script to the world of print. This project was undertaken at the orders of Emperor Maximilian I. One of Fraktur’s first appearances was in a joint venture with the great Albrecht Dürer. This font was based on a later work, Andreae’s magnus opus in the music field, the Coralis Constantini by Henry Isaac. Andreae worked as woodblock cutter and then became a publisher in the city of Nuremberg until his death in 1565. We at PLTF are proud to revive this enormously influential typeface.

An open-hearted humanist sans-serif. Playful and friendly. Faible is everybody’s darling. You cannot not like this good-natured humanist typeface. Sure, it’s a typeface for serious work—but all serious work is better when you put a smile on your face and a whistle on your lips. The typeface itself isn’t rooted in calligraphy, but there are quite some details in Faible that reference handwriting and add a friendly, humanist facet to its appearance. Take the bowls of B, P, and R: they are merrily bulged, like balloons about to take off. The curved leg of the R adds to this joyful mood. Faible’s italics are rendered playfully, too: they’re not merely sloped Roman styles. Rather, they were designed independently with an internal dynamic that sets them apart on the page. With its trademark glyphs, the swooshin’ K and k, and its friendly details, Faible will radiate optimism in display sizes, titles, and headlines. That makes it a great choice for book covers, posters, editorial design, branding, corporate design, advertising, and packaging. Nontheless, it’s carefully spaced and equipped with plenty OpenType features—a reliable tool for short texts and body copy, too. The font family consists of six weights (ranging from Thin to Black), each with its corresponding italic style. Faible’s glyph set contains more than 600 characters, allowing you to enhance your layouts with ligatures, different sets of figures, case sensitive forms, arrows, and other necessities for the ambitious typographer. Faible is the typeface that puts “fun” back into “functional”.

Big News! Tenez has been selected for the Tipos Latinos Biennial 2016 and Typographica’s Favorite Typefaces of 2015! Tenez is a Grand Slam display didone typeface from Plau. We designed it for a branding project, further developing the resulting logotype into a typeface we felt could solve many designers’ needs. Its origins are rooted in pointed nib calligraphy which can be seen in contemporary Didot and Bodoni inspired typefaces. But Tenez’s shapes are organic (these modern typefaces were originally cut by hand after all) – in fact that was the challenge we set from the start: to make a typeface as organic in construction as possible. This echoes some of late 19th century typefaces and advertising, yet we thought of it for contemporary uses. One of the several unique features of Tenez is its unusual Thin weight, in which the contrast between thin strokes and the black area left by the serifs makes for a typewriter-like personality. The italics provide a perfect counterpoint to the roman weights. Tenez was unapologetically conceived as a display typeface meant to be used large as in magazine openings, drop caps or everywhere there’s a need for elegant impact. The family includes support for almost all Latin languages available, figure sets for almost every conceivable occasion (tables, text, you name it), alternates for the quirky beautiful R (sometimes simpler is better, but not always!) and Q (with a nice big tail for that article opener). Tenez pairs really well with our no-frills sans-serif Motiva Sans and our cute vertical connected script Primot.

Grafical is a contemporary take on 19th-century sans serifs. In this family, the amount of geometry inherent within the letterforms has been amped up. Many shapes have received further streamlining, too. All the geometric forms you see have been optically corrected, ensuring their delivery of better legibility. Grafical ships in two different formats: depending on your preference, you can install the typeface as two Variable Fonts or use the family’s 16 static OpenType font files instead. The static fonts offer eight weights, running from Extralight through Black. Each weight has an upright and an italic font available. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the Variable Fonts have vastly greater control over their text’s stroke width. The Grafical Variable and Grafical Variable Italic font’s weight axes allow users to differentiate between almost 1,000 possible font weights. Like a bright star shimmering on a still and quiet summer night, Arched Gothic Condensed is a glowing example of Victorian type. Thin in the middle with clumpy wedges on top and bottom, it truly bears the spirit of a bygone era. Originally known as Concave Extra Condensed, this typeface has shed its waist-high spur notches and gained new figures and lowercase letters. Developed around 1885 by the James Conners & Son Foundry (New York), Arched Gothic Condensed is a marvel of sparkle and glitter in nineteenth century typeface design. Arched Gothic Condensed is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. ITC Gamma font is the work of designer Jovica Veljović. Named after the third letter of the Greek alphabet, ITC Gamma has almost no sharp corners. Its serifs, stroke endings and terminals are all rounded, a feature best seen in larger point sizes.

Nomarch is a charming new Art Nouveau font based on samples of poster lettering from the beginning of the twentieth century. The relatively bold weighting of the characters makes Nomarch particularly good for use in large sizes for titles on posters and flyers.
