Kade is a display/semi display sans family of fonts based on vernacular lettering photographed over the last ten years in and around the harbors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Hence the name Kade that translates into English as ‘quay’, also the name of its designer. Kade grew slowly from many different ideas and elements. The letters reflects the industrial method in which they are cut for the side of ships from large steel plates. Frequently subtleties of curves are compromised due to the cutting tools and the fact engineers are in control. Kade’s italics have an experimental character and were produced in an unorthodox manner by rotating 8 degrees, rather than slanting the roman characters, a method sometimes employed in shipyards. A characteristic of the Minea font family is the achievement of the calligraphic handwriting effect. Dominated by a vigorous, african-inspired, jungle-like pattern, this contemporary, 21st century, sans serif font - African Jungle - contains an eclectic mix of elements from the 20th century. It combines gentle curves with base and caps-line transgressions but is substantially more rounded than in most commercial-style sans serif faces. Terminal strokes are slightly rounded and occasional elements are strongly rounded. The African-inspired pattern fill is suggestive of dense vegetation without being too literal. African Jungle is readable and can be successfully used for headers in presentations, magazines etc, and for display use in newspapers, advertising and promotions. In May of this year, I went to Japan with my (then 11 year old) son Sam. It was his dream to visit Japan, probably because of my tall tales, stemming from the time I was a tour guide! Sam really wanted to try all kinds of Japanese delicacies and one day, when walking around Tokyo, we came across a little stall selling Taiyaki. Taiyaki are fish-shaped waffle/cakes with a red bean or sweet potato filling. They are really delicious! This nice ‘oriental looking’ font was made with a broken popsicle stick and Chinese ink. You are now wondering why I always use Chinese ink and not Japanese ink. Well, I have a stash of the Chinese stuff and it’ll last me a lifetime!

Capsule is a reverse-stress, high-contrast, rounded sans-serif font with two distinct personalities. An all-caps face, there are however variations of some letters in the lowercase slots. The lowercase variants are more playful, with more bulbous elements that riff on phototype faces like Amelia and Data 70, but all can work together and be mixed and matched to your heart's content. Capsule boasts a bunch of esoteric discretionary ligatures to play around with, and stylistic alternates for 4, 7 and £. The language support is extensive enough to set essays in most Latin-based languages, even though that's the last thing you should be doing with this font! Capsule should be set large. The fit is tight and the kerning is aggressive. It's not what you'd call a workhorse, but Capsule is an All-Caps you'll (see what I did there?!) want to use for impactful headlines, cutting edge logos and post-modern layouts.

A handwritten decorative font with brush characteristics This attractive decorative script is found in a pamphlet of script samples from around 1900 which was issued by Otto Maier publishing house in Ravensburg/Germany. The forms and flow of Maier’s Nr. 42 are obviously influenced by Art Nouveau. In the original sample, only the Latin alphabet appears. All other characters, especially the Greek and Cyrillic letters, were modeled on elements of the original. A typeface can first reveal a true "handmade" character when the letter forms do not continually repeat themselves – a completely normal occurrence with handwriting. Thanks to OpenType, some key letters of Maier’s Nr. 42 appear in various alternative forms depending on the combination of letters. For example, the difference is obvious between an e followed by i and an e followed by l. Using this principle, a number of letter combinations are presented with alternative character forms so that overall a very lively impression is created.

The business name “Sylvin” did not offer many characters to work with, so completion of the digital type design was simply left to imagination. The end result is Structural Glass JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions According to Wikipedia: “Pigmented structural glass, also known generically as structural glass and as vitreous marble, and marketed under the names Carrara glass, Sani Onyx, and Vitrolite, among others, is a high-strength, colored glass. Developed in the United States in 1900, it was widely used around the world in the first half of the 20th century in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings. It also found use as a material for signs, tables, and areas requiring a hygienic surface. Over time, the trademarked name “vitrolite” became a generic term for the glass.”

When traveling in Paris, American designer Frederic W. Goudy did a rubbing of a second century marble inscription he found in the Louvre. After ruminating on these letterforms for several years, he drew a titling typeface in 1918, all around the letters P, R, and E. He called the new face Hadriano" as that name was in the original inscription. Robert Wiebking cut the matrices, and the Continental Typefounders Association released the font. Goudy designed a lowercase at the request of Monotype in 1930, though he didn't really like the idea of adding lowercase to an inscriptional letterform. The lowercase looks much like some of Goudy's other Roman faces. Compugraphic added more weights in the late 1970s, and made the shapes more cohesive. Hadriano has nicely cupped serifs and sturdy, generous body shapes. Distinctive individual letters include the cap A and Q, and the lowercase e, g, and z. Hadriano™ is an excellent choice for impressive headings and vigorous display lines."

Tepuy is the name given to the ancient plateau-shaped mountains that abound in the Venezuelan Amazon. Tepuy is a display typeface inspired by the symbolic forms of the Venezuelan ethnic roots. It is constructed based on a very precise geometry of open forms that produce a double letter in form and counterform. Tepuy originates as an evolution curve of my Font Makiritare rectilinearly. Was devised for a book of photographs of the ancient mountains of the Venezuelan Amazon, its form and Makiritare are morphologically inspired crafts in the ethnic groups of the region. Tepuy is held in a very precise geometric construction based on rounded forms, each letter is a form envelope enclosing another in counterform, is a letter to display. Tepuy comes in four versions Regular, Light and thin, and there is a double line version enclosed. Tepuy recommended for creative headlines for the label and packaging design aimed at all ages.

As a practicing graphic designer there have been numerous occasions when I have needed a font that didn’t exist. More often than not the style I was looking for was described as an extra-condensed sans-serif with a contemporary look that was available in a variety of weights. Small caps would be useful, so would a range of numeral styles. And matching italics too, of course. The proportions would consider viewing on hand-held devices, cell phones, remote controllers. And not forgetting that the font would be used in situations which required stacking the lines close. So the overshoots needed to be eliminated – the exaggeration of extremities that are intended to avoid round characters appearing smaller than their more squarish counterparts, often colliding when linespacing is tight. As I refined the design, I tested it on several works-in-progress providing a valuable testing ground and proving popular with my clients.
