Calligrapher Beneventan Minuscule Font, is one of the calligraphic group of fonts called “21 alphabets for Calligraphers“. Busted is the very strange and out-of-character outburst of Bill Troop, a guy who was classically trained in everything, from classical piano and literature to classical photography and type design. As far as we could tell, Bill Troop is the kind of guy whose appearance and voice instantly trigger thoughts of black and white photos, fedoras, and pre-industrial age Europe. A few years ago, he even moved from the United States to England, where it took him less than a week to feel at home and start sounding like a Norwich native. Then something happened and the poor dude just snapped. Busted is the controversial result of the blood rushing to his head. If you know what exactly happened to him, please let us know. Concern, consideration and human interest story aside, Busted is a fascinating thing. It is a set of four interchangeable thick outline fonts where the same letter forms turn from wild to wilder to broken to somewhat clean. Mix them up in a setting and you have words that snarl with a sneer. Life's too short. Take it all with a grain of salt. Scream whenever you feel like it. This typeface appeared in the William H. Page Woodtype specimen book as Gothic Tuscan Condensed Reversed—quite a mouthful. Banner elements appear in the brace and bracket positions, and reversed spaces can be found in the underscore and bar positions. Both versions of this font support the Latin 1252, Central European 1250, Turkish 1254 and Baltic 1257 codepages.

Inside the pages of the April, 1937 issue of the fan magazine “Hollywood Now” is an unusual bit of hand lettering used for the titles in a number of featured articles. A narrow thick-and-thin Art Deco alphabet with many stylized characters, this type design is now available as Now Showing JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Our font (circa 1895) of this old wood type was made by Hamilton of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, but we have been told that another identical font was made earlier by W. H. Page, Greeneville, Connecticut. Hamilton became the final home of many of the old wood type patterns as the early companies went out of business.

Hiroshige was designed in 1986 by Cynthia Hollandsworth (now Batty) of AlphaOmega Typography, Inc. The typeface was originally commissioned for a book of woodblock prints by the great nineteenth-century Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige, whose work influenced many Impressionist artists. The typeface has a gentle calligraphic flair that creates an interesting page of text as well as elegant headlines.

One of the type examples found within the pages of “Lettering” by Harry B. Wright (1950) is a bold hand lettered serif typeface with a unique twist – the slab serifs had rounded corners, looking very much like show card lettering of the early 1900s. This design is now available digitally as Maybrook JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Wanax is an original calligraphic font by Dave Nalle. It is a unique, freehand style, where each character is drawn in a single stroke without ever lifting the pen from the page. This gives it an unusual convoluted look rather reminiscent of an arcane or secret language. It also features a number of variant character forms.

Flowing freely across the page with a graceful ease, Gongo manages to make its mark with every letter, resonating deeper than first appearances. For authority backed up in a friendly tone or wisdom imparted in light hearted words, Gongo is the go to font.

A very rare metal face made a brief appearance in Lanston Specimen books and has all but vanished from use. In fact no examples of the font in use seem to exist. It shares some of the hand-rendered casual feel of Nicholas Cochin, but much heavier and well suited for bold headlines and package design.

Bitstream developed Ang Thong for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The font is encoded with a Microsoft defined Thai character set, Thai Code Page 874. The font includes Thai glyphs and Latin glyphs from Dutch 801. Ang Thong (basin of gold) is a province in central Thailand which consists mostly of flat agricultural land used for growing rice.

A small book entitled “Portfolio of Alphabet Designs for Artists, Architects, Designers & Craftsmen” [published in 1938 by Irene K. Ames] contained a number of pages displaying hand lettered alphabet examples. One sample in particular stood out for its bold Art Deco look and unusual design. This is now available as Dance Moderne JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Here’s another gem pulled from the pages of one of the many editions of Pen and Brush Lettering by the Blandford Press. Cascading bubbles add a somewhat 70s feel to a distinctly Deco font, and provide its name as well. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).
