The most difficult thing in working on the Cyrillic alphabet was to create a system of spacing for characters, as it was done in the Latin alphabet, and to make sure that when typing in Cyrillic, the drawing of the text remained beautiful. That is why the letters Д Л У Ы appearing in the font family are somewhat unusual to the eye, and the proportions of other characters in Cyrillic are not quite “classic” either. In general, the Cyrillic set looks more display than its Latin prototype, but at the same time it lacks the sense of historicity or legacy of the Soviet past, which often comes to the foreground when working on the design of the Cyrillic alphabet in this type of serifs. Classica Pro by Bernd Möllenstädt A real alternative for letterpress printing A masterpiece It was only after many years, shortly before the end of his life, Bernd Möllenstädt brought out these early drafts of his Classica Light and Light Italic from his drawer, and asked me to produce for him on the computer a Bold and Bold Italic, from which we later wanted to interpolate further cuts like Regular and so on. The boldening of letters with an oblique axis and with hairlines which should not grow to the same extent as the general line widths, is hard to cope with perfectly, even for the smartest computer program, and even more so, when it concerns an as complicated set of data as those conceived by Bernd. The automatically generated result could therefore only be a first step that had to be improved manually later. This was about the stage that we had reached when Bernd died in March 2013, leaving me behind with comprehensive corrections on proofs of this automatically generated Bold. Although I was aware that it would mean a lot of work to complete the project, I did not want to leave it unfinished and decided to finalize and publish the Classica, also in Bernd‘s honor. In the course of the two years that I worked on this font family it somewhat naturally became also my own. New details were added and some of the existing changed. A book typeface requires the supreme and forgives rarely, it represents a true masterpiece. My intention and my ambition were to create a real alternative for letterpress printing, with a font family that contains all the typographic options for an excellent typesetting, and is better readable and has a better appearance than other existing typefaces. The great enigma There are hidden depths to FS Silas Sans. First impressions are of a functional, multi-purpose typeface with a cool, edgy, angular character. Gaze into its eyes a little longer, though, and you'll detect a more nuanced, colourful personality, with full, open, satisfyingly squarish forms balancing the abruptness of the sharply-angled terminals and ascenders. Authoritative, official and stern on the outside; amiable and welcoming on the inside. You’re so Dane The designers, led by Phil Garnham, were trying to capture something straight-talking, authentic, and a little... Scandinavian. ‘We were thinking about some of the characters in Danish dramas that were on in the early stages of the font’s development, like The Killing and The Bridge,’ says Phil. ‘The police officers, that is, not the psychopathic killers. Smart and a bit cool, but with a warm heart.’ For a good Danish name, we settled on Silas. It was that or Hans-Christian. The finer points Silas Sans rewards close inspection. Thinking of it as “painterly” may at first seem to fit, but it underestimates Arlette’s ability to master an unseen world of countless emotions and physical applications: magazines, branding, editorial, teen and young adult works, book covers, and a host of products and packaging whose content will be amplified with Arlette’s voice. Not only does Arlette use its eight weights plus italics to speak in Latin-based scripts, it is also fluent in Thai and has six weights (hairline through bold) with which it meets that challenge, whether in text or display. Arlette Thai’s modern nature is seen in two features for the script. One is the decorative Thai characters that are based on original palm leaf manuscripts. Another is a version of the Latin numerals adapted to the height of the script due to their wide use in Thailand. Arlette Thai has been meticulously developed, including contextual kerning to avoid mark clashes. Arlette’s OpenType capabilities include mathematic and scientific figures, positional forms, pointers, arrows, and oldstyle, lining, and tabular lining numerals. In addition to all this, it’s packed with swashes and swash ligatures in both scripts for enthusiastic typesetting. Because it pushes experimentation without compromising readability, both Arlette Thai and Latin are surprisingly legible in small sizes and arrestingly beautiful when their details can be seen.

Minimal, modular, modern—at first glance, Materia shows a contemporary flair, combining pure, strong geometrical form with a subtle, distinct appearance. Actually, the design was inspired by lettering from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century that still can be found in the East of France. While its formal origins date back as far as this, revived e. g. by the constructivists into the nineteen twenties and later on by Dutch information designer Wim Crouwel in the nineteen-sixties, the visual language of Materia still speaks of the »future«. Following a minimalistic concept the font is formally built on a grid. Wherever optical curves are needed for a smoother, more comfortable shape of letters than a simple rectangular block, diagonals cut off the egdes – like a diamond is cut to achieve more beauty. Thus headlines and texts set in Materia are given a certain »egdy« feeling, whereas their tonality is still kept well-balanced, keeping concentation all on information in a nonconfomist way. Materia comes in eight styles, from elegant Thin to attention-forcing Ultra. Even a regular Italic is available, following the classic type-set-principle. Two of the styles are explicitly designed for display use, Shadow and Code. Both are ready for combinations with Bold or each other respectively, the layering of Shadow and Code e. g. allows astonishing effects or highlighting within the letters. For OpenType-users Materia is a real Pro, containing accented Latin letters for over 70 languages, small caps, old style, tabular and lining figures and special condensed titling all caps for cases in which space is all that counts. How useful all of the above mentioned is may be seen in the book David Lynch – Lithos, designed by Koma Amok, published in 2010 by item éditions, Paris, and Hatje Cantz, Germany, which was typeset completely in Materia.

Font breeding is much like animal breeding, where stallion and mare, or bull and cow, or boar and sow are carefully matched in hopes of yielding a robust and useful offspring. When typefaces RoundUp with fat, rounded serifs and WyomingSpaghetti with fat, squarish serifs were chosen to be parents, it was clear that their offspring would inherit large serifs. But to discover exactly what the offspring would look like, the pairing needed to be consummated, which was done with the “Blend Fonts” commend in Fontographer. The two styles of RoundWhy are the result.

Designed by Hans Samuelson in 2023. With two weights and many variations Klip Klop offers a large set of characters for playful lettering. The flavouring is strong avant garde and the build is strict geometrical with even stroke thickness throughout. One unusual feature is that the bottom and top horizontal strokes are centered on the baseline and capital height. This renders the same optical size between the thin and the medium but different actual heights and baselines. Use it for Headlines or signage in any medium! Klip Klop!

ITC Musclehead is the work of type designer Timothy Donaldson, a robust, densely packed handwriting typeface. It almost looks like brushwork but was in fact made with a ruling pen which Donaldson had bought from a company in Salem, Massachusetts. He says, The world's gone ruling-pen mad at the moment [late 1990s] and I was beginning to tire of all the skinny splashiness of the letters that most people were making with them. I wanted to do something heavy and robust with the tool, so that's what I did.""

The Three Degrees had a song called 'Dirty Ol' Man'; Christina Aguilera danced around to the tune of 'Dirrrty' and my three kids leave everything that way after they have finished their meals, so I guess I really had no other option than to call this font: Dirrrty. Dirrrty is a brush font I painted in one go. It is quite dynamic, with some serious grunge in it. Dirrrty is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be interchanged. Comes with with a truly disgusting amount of diacritics.

Rika is a combination of supposedly male and female characteristics, combining together to create a beautifully realised, high impact, condensed typeface. The tall but well-built characters are softened with smooth curves and a mixing in of thin lines, so that the sharpness of many condensed fonts is brought under control. Suave in its application, Rika is all professionalism and elegant showmanship, great for both headlines and text. Rika comes with support for a number of languages, as well as specifically designed glyphs, and its uses might be considered limitless.

The sheet music for the 1939 tune "Chico's Love Song (Ma-La-Ja Fa-La Pas-Ka Lah-Ta) [Cuban Double Talk]" may have had an odd title, but the main portion of it was hand lettered in an interesting style. Condensed letters with rounded corners complemented by sharp lines and angles give the characters an almost futuristic look, despite the fact that they were designed during the Art Deco era. This became the basis for Song Composer JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Greyfriars Kirkyard is the graveyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland. I needed a rather ‘English’ name for this hand drawn Baskerville, but I ended up with a Scottish one. Greyfriars font was hand drawn with a Japanese brush pen. It is based on Baskerville, a font I really like. The glyphs are a bit rough and jumpy, which adds to Greyfriars’ unique look. Use it for your titling, book covers and product packaging, or stick it in a website and see what happens! Comes with a jolly bundle of diacritics.

Orgovan is based on calligraphic script models lettered with a flat brush, which have been a mainstay in the sign makers' and display artists' handbooks since the beginning of the 1960s. Careful adjustments to the construction of the character shapes made the glyphs more open. This ensures that the face is well legible in small sizes, making it suitable for more demanding typographic applications. The Punk and Rounded variations of the base model offer an even broader range of possible applications, while the Fat Cap, Flower Power and Hairy cuts are contemporary decorative alternatives.

Vingo is an understated, elegant, sans serif face. This font is among the first in a series of alphabets I am creating that are dignified and sophisticated. I wish these fonts had been available when I was designing wine labels. These fonts are rooted in "old world" tradition, but are more utilitarian. Some of the funky aspects are downplayed, some are enhanced and updated. Any job that requires understated sophistication is perfect for this face. The name comes from the French for wine, "Vin", and "Go" from gothic-wine gothic or Vingo.
