Spillsbury was inspired by some examples of 1920s signwriting (principally seen on the side of some vintage vans-good thing they were in a photograph and not on the move!). Spillsbury draws inspiration from these sources to provide a unique combination of legibility and flair, which echoes the charm of advertising and publicity material from the halcyon days of the 1920s. A basic range of four display faces os offered - Regular, Plain (not all that plain really!), Shaded and Shadowed. In a new departure for Greater Albion, three pairs of 'Duo' faces are also offered. The Scriptorium got its start in the early days of personal computers with a few font designs for the Commodore 64, and the very first font which we did back then in the early 1980s was a gothic calligraphy font. That style of fonts - the medieval, gothic and black letter genre - has always been the backbone of our collection, but with recent releases we've stayed away from them to introduce a bit more variety. Well, with our new Zauberer font the antique, medieval and gothic look is back with a vengeance. Zauberer isn't a true medieval calligraphy style. It's based on early printed type from Germany which combines calligraphic elements with decorative embellishments from the woodcut printing era. The result is decorative and antique looking and rather appealing. The name comes from the German word for a magician or illusionist.

For decades, cereal companies have included premiums [promotional gifts] inside their packages, printed on the cartons or to send for with a special coupon and redemption instructions. During the 1940s, Pep cereal [a long-discontinued Kellogg's brand] offered a series of water-applied decals within its boxes. Most likely made by the Meyercord Company (one of America's largest transfer decal manufacturers at the time), one decal in particular had an alphabet in gold letters with black outlines. (One can only presume the marketing strategy was to have kids bug their parents to buy more Pep cereal if the child needed more than one letter of the alphabet for his or her initials!) Those decal letters have inspired a digital version as the outline character font Toy Decals JNL, which is available in regular oblique, solid and solid oblique styles.

This is the kind of letters I drew in school back in the 1980ies. I would never have guessed that I would do the same thing like 40 years later! I remember making a simple space game for my VIC-20 computer, and I needed some "data letters" (as I called it) - as far as I can remember, this is close to what I made 40-like years ago. Also, I was inspired by the well known series "Stranger Things" - you know, all that 80ies theme stuff took me down memory lane! :) Anyway, all the letters are handdrawn, using a squared paper as guide - at it may look simple, but it took me quite some time to finish this font (hence the name!)

This is Range Sans, the sans-serif counterpart to Range Serif . It can be categorized as a grotesque, with the idiosyncratic angular details from the serif family making themselves known in the arches and bowls of the lower case. The range of weights is larger than Range Serif, with two more weights at the lighter end of the spectrum. The weights from light to black correspond to their seriffed sisters, so can be interchanged with them freely while maintaining a similar text color and vertical metrics. I recently walked part of the South West Coast Path in the UK. A couple of days in the hike, I came across a small cafe and I decided to have an oat latte (I am lactose intolerant). Since it was early in the morning, the breakfast menu was out and one of the items I noticed was ‘Overnight Oats’. I normally cook my oats with some lactose free milk and water, but apparently you can soak them overnight, add fruit and nuts and eat it like that. I tried it, it’s ok, but I think I prefer the cooked version. Overnight Oats is a bit of an odd font: it is very higgledy piggledy, yet legible and unique. If you want something out of the ordinary, then this may be your font!
