These initials set I collected from Early 15th century manuscript called Claudii Ptolemei Cosmographia, created by the famous Greek scholar Claudius Ptolemaeus in the middle of the 2nd century. The origins of this style called White Vine with interlaced patterns and vine should be found in Ottonian Renaissance manuscripts. Munchies is a reverse contrast slab-serif font family. Inspired by the volume and size of 19th century wood letterpress blocks and the Italian Caslon language. Munchies has 12 variants, from Heavy to Thin, with opentype options in a set consisting of uppercase, lowercase, small caps, ligatures, and alternate letters (A, M, N, V, W, &, Arrows, *). Munchies is divided into two subfamilies: Normal and Display. The Normal style has an appearance reminiscent of Western posters with a “measured” contrast. While the Display style takes the contrast to the extreme. Both styles are also available in Variable version. The inverted contrast makes it an interesting and striking looking typeface that stands out in any context. Perfect for headlines, bold branding, or animation like kinetic typeface.

My latest book production group is quite conservative. I discovered my need for a pair of headline fonts with the same vertical metrics which are looser and more lively. Since the serif family is Biblia Serif, and the Sans family is Draetha [which is Welch for preach], Araldo [which is Italian for herald] makes sense to me. Narrow has my normal set of Opentype features with small caps, small cap figures, and the rest of the figure sets. Bold is too heavy for small caps, without messing with the metrics. So, it has the normal figure sets, plus a decent set of discretionary ligatures. They both work well, and are meeting my need for a headline family to add to the book production group.

Latvian designer and educator Gustav Grinbergs created Stencil Moonlight as an attempt to slightly lighten up the stencil type scene. Intended as a lively, semi-formal face, its shapes are smooth and compact. It leaves a very heavy feeling on the page, as its letters display a very fat bold design. Stencil Moonlight is available is two separate font styles, Regular and Small Caps. When used together, the Stencil Moonlight family can create the perfect combination for your next display need. Stencil Moonlight works best in larger sizes, where it is clear that its forms stem from an experiment with stencil design. Grinbergs recommends the face for application in package design, advertising, poster design, and perhaps even for the subtitling of foreign films!

The redefinition of a classic In the 1920s the Viennese government decided to standardize the street signs across the city. A typeface was especially constructed for the purpose. It was available in a Heavy and a Bold Condensed version, to support short street names as well as longer ones. As the years went by, the typeface was adopted and redrawn by several enamel factories. These adaptations lead to variations on the design, and to the fact that there isn’t a Viennese street sign font but 16 – in part severely – different versions. Henriette is not a digitization of any of those versions; rather, it is influenced by all of them. The italic versions are completely original and designed to accompany the Roman.

Bitstream Cooper was designed at Bitstream in 1986 by means of adding light, medium, and bold styles, with the corresponding italics, to the existing black ones. Based on Cooper Black, 1919, by Oswald Bruce Cooper, which was firstly released as a hand composition font in 1922 by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler of Chicago and later spread by ATF. Cooper Black is an extra bold face based on Cooper Old Style. Bitstream Cooper is an old style face with rounded serifs and tilted back ovals. For use both in text (normal weights) and in advertising and display typography (heavy weights). Cyrillic version was developed for ParaType in 2000 by Manvel Shmavonyan and based on TM Oswald face of TypeMarket, 1996, by Victoria Grigorenko.

Railroad Gothic was originally designed in 1906 for ATF (American Type Founders). This uppercase-only typeface is very condensed and also heavy, giving it a distinct 19th American wood type feeling. Like those 19th Century classics, Railroad Gothic is best used when set really big. Originally designed for use in railroad signage, Railroad Gothic has since been adapted for use in many American tabloid journals, which employ it in screaming headlines. When you need to set something large and loud for the whole world to see, this old ATF classic may be right for you. Railroad Gothic is an all caps font, and is available in digital format exclusively from Linotype. The typeface is included in the Take Type 4 collection from Linotype GmbH."

Kevlar was initially inspired by an obscure logo discovered in a 1960s radio-fan magazine. Of immediate interest was that the upper half of the typeface appeared to be a sans while the lower half appeared as a curious blend of a slab serif imbued with a script-like quality. First came Kevlar Bold in 2003, closely followed by its text weight companion Kevlar Regular. The original source of the inspiration as then revisited to develop the third in the set, Kevlar Slab, a truly individual mix of script-like fluency with the heavy weight base of a slab serif.

First Prize typeface has simple shapes. It is a narrow, heavy sans serif typeface with geometrical logic and quite predictable constructions of characters. The idea behind it was to combine constructed structure of the skeleton and some calligraphic ideas, swashes and cursiveness. At the moment First Prize typeface consists of three narrow styles: bold, upright italic and italic. Cursive weights have beautiful ending swashes and initials. There are few alternative shapes for A&N. As a Display typeface First Prize will work very well with any other typefaces for the good of any project in print or online.

Paestum is a Latin typeface inspired by Greek inscriptions of the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. Its name comes, suitably, from the Latin name for Poseidonia, a former Greek city south of Naples whose two remaining Doric temples have been on antiquities tours since at least the 1700s. Others have scanned this terrain before, of course, but earlier designs failed to supply a lower case. Although Paestum includes complete upper- and lowercase alphabets, diacritics, numerals, and essential punctuation, it does not have many unhistorical glyphs -- such as currency symbols and the @ sign. Paestum comes with three weights: light, medium, and heavy.

Mynaruse is an elegant and regal roman inscriptional titling family. It has sharp and elongated serifs that give the face extra punch. The face shines in settings that call for elegance and splendor. Lombriz attempts to bridge the gap between different kinds of typography - including packaging, signage, and sporting. The result is a heavy, yet casual, 1950s-inspired semi-connected script. The freestyle Lombriz feels friendlier, more readable, and a touch more ‘real’ than most scripts of its kind. In certain settings, the thickness of the stroke in the capital letters accentuates, while the lowercase flows like casual, brush-drawn letters should. Lombriz comes equipped with more than 50 alternates and custom ligatures. These extras are conveniently tucked into the OpenType version for those programs that support such functionality.

Where Modern is too fragile and Century too boring, Hercules comes with its elegant forms and, at the same time, with sufficient firmness to be usable for longer texts. In its heavy, bold designs it approaches Falstaff, while in the light ones it has some features which are taken over from Didot or from Modern. The text designs have been corrected for small sizes. The range of its use is, therefore, quite extensive - from dictionaries and technical literature through magazines to art posters and advertising materials. Suitable combination: Splendid Quartett (especially recommended), Excelsor Script, Plagwitz, but also Zeppelin and Compur.

Chipperly is a brand new face inspired by the art of the Edwardian poster, especially travel posters. It’s good for clear ad legible headings which need a gentle and unobtrusive period touch, and is the latest is Greater Albion’s line of faces to explore the ‘small capitals’ idea. Umberland Slab is an attractive family available in 3 different weights with italics. There’s a particular emphasis on simple geometric shapes and the way they interact with tall vertical strokes. Smooth curves and sharp angles blend together in a pleasing symmetry. Stroke widths are given variable degrees of contrast but serifs are consistent and heavy handed. Spacing is on the tight side with some lowercase pairs quite snug against each other. Umberland Slab would work well in small blocks of text, corporate logos, menus, or signage. This family is equipped with European accents/diacritics for international support, fractions, alternates, and ligatures.
