ITC Digital Woodcuts font is the work of Timothy Donaldson. Although made on a computer, each character has the look of a block of wood with a character cut into it. The forms are made entirely of lines, typical of how the result would be if they were truly cut into wood. ITC Digital Woodcuts is a capital letter alphabet including both white letters on a black background and black letters on a whitish background which looks as though the bark of the piece of wood was chiseled away for the effect. Donaldson suggests alternating the black version with the white to create a three dimensional effect.

Diaconia Old Style is a new rendition of my workhorse body copy font that I originally designed to use for the body copy of "Printing in a Digital World." I became increasingly upset with the lack of lowercase numbers and true small caps. Diaconia started life as a modification of one of the Dutch Bible fonts I traced. It has changed a lot since then (although I have a hard time telling how much because I have lost the original). The plain and italic work especially well when used in very large sizes as display faces. The other four variants (small caps, heavy, heavy italic, and black) are designed for use in book production. Because I format all my own books, I was able to design fonts that met my needs exactly: lowercase numbers, SMALL CAPS font, Mac Command, Option, and Control symbols, ballot box in the section slot, and several other special characters. DiaconiaPro is the OpenType family of my body copy workhorse. Argot is inspired by condensed grotesque letterforms and would be a monolinear sans except for an unorthodox disparity between inner and outer shapes. Elegantly curved outlines contrast starkly with austere rectangular counters, suggesting a no-frills functionality, 20th century modernism, or an unsettling discordance. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that these letter shapes are familiar. They have the unmistakable color and weight of Cooper Black, Oswald Cooper's most famous typeface from 1921. What should be a surprise is that these letters are actually from George Auriol's Robur Noir (or Robur Black), published in France circa 1909 by the Peignot foundry as a bolder, solid counterpart to its popular Auriol typeface (1901). This face precedes Cooper Black by a dozen of years and a whole Great War. Cooper Black has always been a bit of a strange typographical apparition to anyone who tried to explain its original purpose, instant popularity in the 1920s, and major revival in the late 1960s. BB&S and Oswald Cooper PR aside, it is quite evident that the majority of Cooper Black's forms did not evolve from Cooper Old Style, as its originators claimed. And the claim that it collected various Art Nouveau elements is of course too ambiguous to be questioned. But when compared with Robur Noir, the "elements" in question can hardly be debated. The chronology of this "machine age" ad face in metal is amusing and stands as somewhat of a general index of post-Great War global industrial competition: - 1901: Peignot releases Auriol, based on the handwriting of George Auriol (the "quintessential Art Nouveau designer," according to Steven Heller and Louise Fili), and it becomes very popular. - 1909-1912: Peignot releases the Robur family of faces. The eight styles released are Robur Noir and its italic, a condensed version called Robur Noir Allongée (Elongated) and its italic, an outline version called Clair De Lune and its condensed/elongated, a lined/striped version called Robur Tigre, and its condensed/elongated counterpart. - 1914 to 1918: World War One uses up economies on both sides of the Atlantic, claims Georges Peignot with a bullet to the forehead, and non-war industry stalls for 4 years. - 1921: BB&S releases Cooper Black with a lot of hype to hungry publishing, manufacturing and advertising industries. - 1924: Robert Middleton releases Ludlow Black. - 1924: The Stevens Shanks foundry, the British successor to the Figgins legacy, releases its own exact copies of Robur Noir and Robur Noir Allongée, alongside a lined version called Royal Lining. - 1925: Oswald Cooper releases his Cooper Black Condensed, with similar math to Robur Noir Allongée (20% reduction in width and vectical stroke). - 1925: Monotype releases Frederick Goudy's Goudy Heavy, an "answer to Cooper Black". Type historians gravely note it as the "teacher steals from his student" scandal. Goudy Heavy Condensed follows a few years later. - 1928: Linotype releases Chauncey Griffith's Pabst Extra Bold. The condensed counterpart is released in 1931. When type production technologies changed and it was time to retool the old faces for the Typositor age, Cooper Black was a frontrunning candidate, while Robur Noir was all but erased from history. This was mostly due to its commercial revival by flourishing and media-driven music and advertising industries. By the late 1960s variations and spinoffs of Cooper Black were in every typesetting catalog. In the early- to mid-1970s, VGC, wanting to capitalize on the Art Nouveau onslaught, published an uncredited exact copy of Robur Black under the name Skylark. But that also went with the dust of history and PR when digital tech came around, and Cooper Black was once again a prime retooling candidate. The "old fellows stole all of our best ideas" indeed. So almost a hundred years after its initial fizz, Robur is here in digital form, to reclaim its rightful position as the inspiration for, and the best alternative to, Cooper Black. Given that its forms date back to the turn of the century, a time when foundry output had a closer relationship to calligraphic and humanist craft, its shapes are truer to brush strokes and much more idiosyncratic than Cooper Black in their totality's construct. MD-Type Rounded is a modern, stylish font family. The family consists of five fonts (Regular, Bold, Light, Block, Black) which are formed by all capital letters. The strong and accented letters were rounded on the corners and therefore softened. The font family supports Turkish language as well.

Hadron is a fusion of gothic black letter and foundational letter forms. It has a heavy flat pen influence but is combined with more modern letter forms for increased legibility over that offered by black letter fonts. Unlike most black letter fonts, Hadron can be set all caps using the first level of caps. A basic design kernel based on the caps “O” and “H” was created first. These letter forms consist of an interplay between curves and straight lines with abrupt transitions and also possess some of the geometric crispness of a modern sans serif. The rest of the Hadron font was developed around this “O” and “H” kernel. This font could be used for any application requiring a formal black letter or foundational lettering look. Hadron could also be used for invitations, brochures and posters. The first level of caps and lower case is basic enough to set a large body of text. It could also be set all caps at that level.

PensleCaligraf is a wild and exuberant calligraphic script. It may lack the elegance for formal invitations and certificates but its quirkiness may make it suitable for invitations and documents that are casual or humorous such as children's birthday announcements or participation awards.

Kubrick is an experiment in extremes. The Light font is very tall and slender, the Black font is very massive, and Kubrick's slender counters push some of its glyphs to the edge of recognition. The thin counters and negative spaces also give text set in Kubrick a definite visual sparkle, especially in all-uppercase settings. Because of its extreme letterforms, Kubrick is recommended only for large display use. The default letterspacing is set fairly wide to keep text legible. Kubrick was a double-experiment. One part of it was to see how heavy and massive a typeface I could make while still keeping it legible. The other part was to develop a Multiple Master font. Multiple Master fonts were a format developed by Adobe that allowed the user to change things like the weight and width of a typeface. Monollith started as just such a Multiple Master typeface, but when Adobe discontinued the Multiple Master format, I stopped work on the typeface. Later I decided to continue work on it, but as five separate font weights: Light, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold and Black. Very rectilinear letterforms with extremely narrow counters and negative spaces. The five fonts go from very thin and condensed to very heavy and extended. Use in large display settings where unornamented high visual impact is desired.

The rustic lettering which also served as the model for Grist Mill JNL is the basis for Gristwood JNL. Another set of vintage wood type has the letters reversed out of blocks, making for a specialty titling font. Decorative end caps are located on the greater and less than keys and also on the plus and equal keys. A blank block for regular word spacing is on the underscore key, along with a wider blank box on the backslash key. This typeface has a somewhat limited character set.
