The silent film »The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari« (1920) is undoubtedly one of the breathtaking milestones within the German Expressionist Movement, a time of extraordinarily creative works of art as a reaction to a world in rapid change. The original intertitles of Caligari were worked out by the set designers (and painters) Walter Reimann, Walter Röhrig, and Hermann Warm, using a unique expressionistic language of form for dramatic and iconic lettering. When in 2010 KOMA AMOK’s Joerg Ewald Meißner and Gerd Sebastian Jakob were commissioned by the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt and publisher Hatje Cantz to design the catalog for the exhibition »The Total Artwork in Expressionism«—showing works of art, architecture, film, literature, theater, and dance—it was soon perfectly clear that a new typeface, inspired by the Caligari intertitles, should speak for all the expressionistic arts. An intense process of research and analysis began. The original letters of the Caligari intertitles were individuals on their own. Furthermore, each of the three title designers had added his specific approach to the basic Caligari type style. From hundreds of different As to Zs a choice had to be made, which should be THE characteristic Caligari letter for a digital typesetting font. Finally the chosen letters were cut and drawn again, missing letters were added according to the formal priniciples, all-in-all 1000 glyphs were digitised to complete a usefull OpenType font ready for use. When in the autumn of 2010 the exhibition started successfully with great media interest, the posters all over Darmstadt announced »You must become Caligari!« – set in the brandnew typeface. The font Caligari Pro offers alternative forms for every letter and a whole bunch of ligatures, thus creating an expressive, individual image of headlines and text. Eden Light, originally designed by the American type designer Robert H. Middleton in 1934, was commissioned by Publish magazine for a redesign in 1990. When I found a specimen of Eden Bold a couple years later, I decided to digitize it also. Subsequently, I created a Medium weight. Very squared and compact with thin slab serifs, Eden includes support of all European languages that use the Latin alphabet.

Containing over 100 ligatures, Epistula is a loosely written font, resembling my own natural way of writing. It has a nice flow and the pointy tail-ends give it a certain speed. Creating Epistula has been a long process, but returning to the drawing board a few times has – in my humble opinion – paid off. This font comes in two weights: regular and medium. Because sometimes one flavour just isn’t enough…

Artigo Display is the odd sister of Artigo text typeface. It is a contemporary interpretation of handwriting shapes in a display version of the italic. It is more expressive and it has its own personality. It was renovated with five new weights that bring more flexibility to use the typeface in different mediums. Artigo Display has won a Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Typeface Competition in January 2018.

The faces of IanSegoe were early attempts by IngrimayneType to construct medieval-looking faces. They drew inspiration from several medieval-themed fonts that were available at the time (1990). The inspiration for this typeface came from various images of the Blossom Dairy Co. restaurant, originally opened as an ice cream and sandwich shop located on Quarrier Street in Charleston, West Virginia. The restaurant first opened in 1938 as an outgrowth of the Blossom Dairy Co. itself, and existed under various ownerships until it permanently closed on Nov. 11, 2016.
