Among the countless typefaces available today, the Modern Face style is relatively underrepresented. During the 19th century and then later with the competition from the mechanized hot metal types and film setting, a number of attractive headline types appeared in this style. For text, however, the available types were limited to those based on tried and true classics like Walbaum, Didot and Bodoni, which were created between 1780 and 1830, as well as a few variations from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The demand for new Modern text types remained nonexistant until the 1960s. Such was the situation when the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) commissioned me to come up with a concept and sketches of a new hot metal type. I was able to convince the director of the foundry that there was a niche to be filled with contemporary Modern typography. Another reason for the production of a new type was of a technical nature: the introduction of a new setting technique should not be limited to existing typefaces, but instead should lead to innovative text types suited to the demands of the new applications. André Gürtler, Basilia's designer: I began to work on the concept and initial designs of the new text type in 1968. I wanted to give the type a classical look, expressed above all in the strong stroke contrast between the robust verticals and fine horizontal strokes and serifs. This is one of the main characteristics of Modern typography.""This new typeface, Basilia, is distinguished by its soft, open appearance as well as a number of details which together mark a departure from historical models. For example, it has nothing of Bodoni's round letters and their angular, narrow spacing, and displays instead round forms with a much softer stroke in the curves. The sources of inspiration for the Atyp typeface are spread out widely both stylistically and chronologically. The basic proportions of the uppercase refer to the elementary geometric constructions of the Bauhaus. The subtle details in the drawing of the characters and the microscopic adjustments, which evoke the illusion of uniformity and mechanical purity, pay homage to the rationalism of the typefaces popular in the International Style. The increased contrast of the joints of the bowls and shoulders in the Display weight, which in certain diagonal curves transition into almost deconstructive permutations. Atyp was created by adapting a typeface originally made for a commercial television station. The potential of the neutral grotesque, proven by its excellent readability on screens, gave the impetus for its preparation into an extremely wide character set with full support for three language scripts. A backstory with a different name Years ago, I was commissioned to take my Lust typeface and produce something unique to use for large format graphics for an event…cool. It needed to be hyper-contrast with a lot of over-the-top details. With a tight turnaround, I looked for primers within my development catalogue to help me, and settled on some early work on a typeface I had drawn called Hedonist. I used those sketches and its conventions to retrofit and build out Lust Hedonist (only to see the project go bust on the client’s end). I intended to go back shortly after the Lust Hedonist release to finalize a retail version of the OG Hedonist, but I never could settle on the look of the 'g' or the numerals, got distracted with other projects, and never picked it back up… until last year. After randomly doodling a fat, flat ‘g’ with an extremely tilted counter axis, I knew immediately how it could be used and that (re)set things in motion. Only problem was, in the process of refining the letterforms I began truly dissecting the pieces, rediscovering all of the recklessness within Hedonist, and decided on fundamentally rewriting the approach to the typeface… literally flaying it to the bone. I’m much, much happier with this finished typeface now, but the name no longer fit the moniker given to the first, adolescent approach—there’s far more audacity and cleverness in these letterforms, tenacious in their resolution now. As a result, the name Courage fit the mettle of this typeface so much more, so I kept it.

Black Pearl is a revival of an ornate calligraphic font possibly created between 1850 and 1870. I spent two years looking for all the letters of this font; once I found them all, I immediately went to work on recreating this old classic. I was not able to find any numbers for the font, so new to this style are numbers, some punctuation and currency symbols. The Truetype and OpenType formats include an extended character set with Central and Eastern European accented letters. Extra characters in this font are left and right pointing hands in place of the less than and greater than keys; a ship’s wheel, located on the asterisk key; and a boat anchor on the bracket keys.

The Strapwork is a symbolic font with the ornaments from the 16th century Mannerism era. These type of ornaments are called Strapwork and are combined with the Moreske ornament. Together they create a rich and refine style. As a prototype for this font I took the tables of ornament examples by etcher Balthasar Bos (1554). Early in my career as a graphic designer I purchased a book on Japanese packaging. With it, I came to notice that Japanese characters used mostly a modicum of strokes. This font was my attempt at trying to balance the familiarity of a Latin alphabet with the unfamiliarity of Kanji and Kana. It was more of a typographical challenge than usual; since going too much in either direction would defeat the purpose. I would like to think that, for the most part, I got the balance right.
