Simpliciter Sans is a typeface based on the lettering used in the 20th century on technical drawings, either written by free hand or using templates. The lettering was made with a round pen, therefore all lines got rounded ends. All lines had the same thickness in uppercase, lowercase and small caps. The upright style was used on construction drawings and the italic style on machine drawings. The backslant style was used on maps for names of water bodies — seas, lakes, rivers etc. — and for water depth. Simpliciter Sans is primarily intended for texts on drawings, diagrams, charts and maps, but it can also be used for signs and labels. It also works surprisingly well as a body type in smaller sizes.

ITC Humana Script font is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson. He crafted this typeface with a broad-tipped pen on paper before carefully creating the final digital version. ITC Humana Script is the perfect font for anything requiring both clarity and a touch of personality.

Designed by Jakob Erbar and released in 1930, Koloss is a headline face that works well for posters. Characters have been drawn with a broad nib leaving small counters. This gives the effect of a compressed face, although the width of the strokes imply a fat face.

Sweet Titling No. 22 is part of the Sweet Collection of engraved lettering styles from the 20th Century, published by MVB Fonts. This obscure, art deco design would have been used for engraved letterhead, business cards, etc., and likely first appeared in the 1920s or ’30s.

Monotype Lightline Gothic is a thin sans serif face cut by American Type Founders to work with Franklin Gothic, which had been designed as a bold face. The rather condensed nature of the Monotype Lightline Gothic font has made it popular for advertising display and newspaper work.

Britannic is a sans serif face with a vertical axis and a high degree of stroke contrast, especially in the heavier weights. This typeface exudes a degree of elegance that has not often been matched during the Century that has passed since it was first drawn.

Swedish designer Lennart Hansson began designing letterforms at the age of 20, and since then his exceptional calligraphic artwork has been on exhibit throughout the world. Hansson won the Nordic Typeface Competition in Copenhagen for his typeface Runa Serif, inspired by the forms of ancient Viking runes.

Lettering Project JNL was based on one of the many templates made by the Wood-Regan Instrument Company (also known as Wrico). Their sign making kits allowed anyone using the templates, special ink pens and alignment guides to create professional looking lettering with a minimum of experience.

A concertina is a kind of musical instrument, not unlike an accordeon. I just liked the name; I have to admit I’m not a particular fan of accordeon music… Concertina is a beautiful handmade script font. A little rough, but elegant as well. It was made with a small Japanese brush pen on coarse paper. Concertina comes with double letter ligatures and end-letter alternates. To access the end-letter alternates, type the letter you want + space (and make sure to tick the ‘ligatures’ box in your OT environment).

HERENGRACHT (Patricians' Canal or Lord’s Canal) is the first of the three major canals in the city centre of Amsterdam. The canal is named after the heren regeerders who governed the city in the 16th and 17th century. The most fashionable part is called the Golden Bend, with many double wide mansions, inner gardens and coach houses on Keizersgracht. Inspired by a biography of Coco Chanel and trying to capture the quintessential mood of classical fashion elegance, Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini designed Coco Gothic looking for the effect that the first geometric sans typefaces (like Futura, Kabel or the italian eponyms like Semplicità) had when printed on paper. The crisp modernist shapes acquired in printing charme and warmth through a slight rounding of the corners that is translated digitally in the design of Coco Gothic. This signature touch is enhanced by the inclusion of light humanist touches to the proportions of the letters, resulting in the unique mix that makes Coco Gothic one of our best sellers, with a look that is both contemporary and vintage. After six years from the original project (that has spawned in the meanwhile successful families like Cocogoose and Coco Sharp), we went back to the design to completely redraw and expand the original family, creating with a Pro version that has better on-screen readability, a wider weight range, variable type versions and more language coverage (with Coco Gothic Arabic adding a new script to the latin, greek and Cyrillic of the original). Cartier was Canada’s first roman text typeface, created in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s centennial. Its designer, Carl Dair, was one of the country’s most celebrated graphic design pioneers, and a fine designer indeed — but he was not a trained type designer. He had spent a year at the Enschedé type foundry and printing works in the Netherlands, but that probably wasn’t enough to fully grasp all that was required to make an effective text face. It is also possible that Dair simply compromised his own design by not allowing any of the much needed alterations to be made to his working drawings when they were handed over to Linotype for production. Cartier, though a strikingly original oldstyle, never became the influential allround text face it might have been. A display typeface derived from it, Raleigh, was more successful. Realizing that Dair’s design was sound in concept, if not in execution, Rod McDonald began working on a new digital version in 1997. The final family is convincing proof that Cartier could have been the functional text face that Dair originally wanted.

Hand-drawn by an architectural renderer's daughter, Plinth is an craftsman-inspired font that leaves a strong and lasting impression. Both capital and lowercase letters have been designed for impacting display, but are also easily read in large blocks of text. Plinth includes multi-language support as well as a variety of OpenType features including decorative alternate caps, double-letter ligatures, complete fractions, currency figures, and 4 stylistic sets. Set One replaces commonly used titles (Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms., and Dr.) with complementary hand-drawn versions. Set Two replaces 8 commonly used prepositions (and, the, to, to the, or, of, for and at) with complementary wordforms. Set Three seats counting contractions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) in their proper superscript place. And Set Four provides a fancy alternate of both ampersand and asterisk. Ahra from Magpie Paper Works is an upright, hand-lettered script full of fun calligraphy. This Opentype font was created with a pointed pen & ink, and features a host of special features. Within Ahra are three sets of capital letters, ranging from simple to quirky to traditional, as well as single-word characters for common titles (Mr., Miss, Dr., etc.) prepositions (to, the, for, etc.) and envelope addressing (blvd., st., etc.). You'll also find simple & automatic end-of-word swashes, old-style numerals and special double-letter ligatures for a true hand-drawn look. Ahra Hand features decorative word art, all lovingly drawn in a swirling traditional calligraphy style. There are 88 unique greetings, prompts, and phrases, plus an ornate set of numerals 0-9. Ahra Swash includes over fifty unique hand-inked flourishes, borders, corners, swashes and curls. Mix and match for a truly custom look! All were designed to coordniate with the Ahra alphabet, but can be used to enhance other faux-calligraphy fonts.

Willard T. Sniffin deserves the credit for this charming little stationery and greeting card typeface developed for American Type Founders in 1930. Capital letters show an occasional hint of ornamentation and lowercase letters are of the linking variety. The original set of exquisite alternate characters (A,B,G,T,V, W, o, s) has been included in this digital version. Adonis Old Style is ideal where a 1920s or 30s script-like lettering look is required. Adonis Old Style with Alternates is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Gobsmacked is a rather new English word. It has been around since 1959 and was used mostly around Liverpool at that time. The word means: ’astounded’, ‘flabbergasted’ (another nice word!) or ‘speechless’. Gob could be of French or Scottish Gaelic origin and means ‘mouth’. Gobsmacked font was created using a brush and black gouache. The result is a very eroded, very legible and quite unique brush font. I have created alternates for the lower case letters, plus two double letter ligatures (oo and ss). Use it for any design that needs a little brushwork; I am sure the result will leave you gobsmacked!

AEONUS is a gothic font, an attempt to combine a wide-edged and pointed pen, while giving the font a readability that many gothic fonts lack. Angular shapes made strictly in 45 degrees and straight lines give the font a touch of futurism. A gothic, futuristic font that retains readability and makes a unique impression is the goal that was followed when creating the font. Aeonus also conveys the spirit of the occult and something dark. Aeonus is good for prints on clothes, posters, packaging, tattoo, merchandising, large headlines, logos, product design, and any other large font compositions.

dT Ampla shares many characteristics of the versatile sans typefaces of today: nice range of five weights with matching italics, 40+ supported languages, contemporary upper-to-lowercase proportions and impeccable performance in big and text sizes. However, all these features are designed with distinct shapes and details. Notice the angled terminals – the cut at the end of the strokes – or how the vertical strokes in the italics seem to 'bend' a little, for instance. The sum of these and many more design decisions result in a typeface capable of delivering a strong presence to sites, interfaces, apps, magazines and corporate graphic language.

Pico is the pixel font that works small and large—from web buttons to LED boards. The native font size is 16px, however you can work within any size that’s a multiple of 2. Pico is featured in the gorgeous mobile game Space Age: A Game of Cosmic Adventure by Big Bucket! The latest version of Pico (1.300) includes a staggering 454 new characters (from 235 to 689)! This update includes support for south eastern European and all new Cyrillic, Hebrew, Greek and math characters. Latin characters and kerning have also been updated and improved for legibility.

Linotype Merlin is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest from 1994 to 1997. This font was designed by Anne Boskamp and its alphabet consists exclusively of capital letters. At the same time aggressive and sensitive, Merlin looks as though it were scratched onto paper with a pen tip saturated with ink. Like characters from another time, the letters fall into place and make an impression which is both vulnerable and strong, lively and reserved. Merlin’s historical roots lie in the archaic pictograms in the caves of Stone Age civilizations.

I needed a name with ‘brush’ in it and most have already been taken, so I did a little digging and found out that Purshia tridentata, a flowering plant native to the mountainous areas of western North America is called bitterbrush. It is also known as antelope brush, quinine brush and buckbrush - but I settled on Bitterbrush. There’s nothing bitter about Bitterbrush. It is actually a very sweet hand brushed font. It comes with ligatures for double letter combinations and a truck load of diacritics. And (something I am very proud of): it supports the Vietnamese language!

DF Korolev is a 72 weight geometric sans serif family based on lettering by an anonymous Soviet graphic designer from the propaganda displays at the Communist Red Square parade in 1937. It has been named in honor of Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov, or Korolev, considered by many to be the father of practical astronomics. Rational and robust, it is also elegant and refined. Tracings done in Illustrator over a photograph featuring this type pinned down some of the basic character shapes. These were then imported into FontLab, where the full glyph complement was developed. The lower-case has been designed from scratch, and adheres to the structural logic of the uppercase as closely as possible. The complete Korolev super-family includes standard, italic, condensed, and compressed versions, each in five weights. Try the ‘rounded’ and ‘rough’ companion families. The Alternate families come with a double-story “a”.

This is a grotesque typeface which was derived from an older more simple version designed back in 2000. Bulletin Sans Pro is distinguished by its selective deep cuts which give this typeface a robust and contemporary look. These cuts become more apparent at larger sizes while they create a more subtle effect at smaller sizes. For intense titles try the black version.
