Roman-style stencil fonts have been around for much longer than most people realize - from the interlocking brass stencils of the 1880s to the laser-cut plastic stencils of today. A 1 inch Roman lettering guide [die-cut from oil board with spacing holes for correct alignment] made by the now-defunct Zipatone Corporation in the 1970s was a clone of an existing design of another company; but with variations in certain character shapes. This then became the working model for Classroom Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Banquet SCF is a rough-and-ready brush font with a "warts and all" appearance. Is has a simple, unsophisticated "believable" look. Use it when you want to make your message more honest, more homespun and more real. Use it in menus, invitations and advertisements. When I created it, I was designing a simple brush-written invitation to a medieval banquet. Hence the name: "Banquet". It has a full character set with all upper and lower case, special and accented characters. All characters have been letterspaced and kerned.

Sometimes type designs are set aside as one project takes priority over another and occasionally it becomes overlooked. One such example is a set of extra bold, sans serif stencil characters drawn out in 2017. Regrettably, as much time has passed, no backstory can be applied to this typeface. It was checked against existing releases in the Jeff Levine Fonts library and didn’t seem to have been re-worked for any subsequent release. With this in mind, Baggage Claim JNL makes its belated appearance and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Originally Mamontov has been inspired by poster (usually wooden) types of the end of 19th—the beginning of 20th centuries. The type family was named after Savva Ivanovich Mamontov (1841-1918), Russian industrialist and patron of the arts. Massive asymmetric serifs, stocky proportions, type weight... are traces of harsh imperial reality. And soft forms of ovals, exaggerated compensators, humanistic curves of serifs and horizontal strokes betray the sensitivity and artistry of Savva Ivanovich. Mamontov has 25 styles, ranging from Light to Black and from Condensed to Wide, with more than 1000 characters per font.

Linotype Fresh Ewka is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was designed by Polish artist Dariusz Nowak-Nova and each letter seems to be a work in itself. The fine hair lines are decorated with tiny squares and look like wires with nodes while the thicker strokes have indefinite contours and seem to have been made with a thick brush. Linotype Fresh Ewka is suitable for headlines in large point sizes.

Online auctions offer a treasure trove of lost or forgotten merchandise, and many items pertaining to lettering just beg to be digitized into a typeface. Case in point is a partial set of brass stencils that were the visual model for Ultra Thin Stencil JNL. Loosely based on Bembo and Plantin, the Perrywood font family retains some old style characteristics which give the face a familiar feel, however much attention has been paid to optimizing the design to give good quality output at small point sizes and from low resolution output devices. The consistency of character shapes allows close letter spacing to give compact word shapes, excellent word recognition and an overall economy in text. Perrywood offers good legibility and, coupled with an even text color will be very useful for text setting, in correspondence, for faxes and reports.

One of the most successful new ornament fonts is CalligraphiaLatina. It is part of a trend that's been quite popular lately: messed-up calligraphy. In Lewis F. Day’s 1910 classic, Alphabets Old and New, the author presented the inspiration for this typeface as an example of German monumental lettering, most likely to suggest not that the typeface was really big, but that it had been found on German monuments. Bold yet charming, the face takes its name from a picturesque village in the Bavarian Alps which was the ancestral home of the Gröbl line of Curtii forebears. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Linea 72 is a typical seventies display typeface that was designed by Roland Hirter back in the phototypesetting days, when typefaces were really drawn by hand. In this static environment each work step took its time. With the decision to digitize this typeface his son Thomas Hirter also chose to develop it further with todays technical possibilities. That’s why the font now includes over 600 glyphs and ten stylistic sets, offering different stylistic alternates of several letters. Linea 72 comes in the two original styles Regular and Kontur.

Terrified AOE was inspired by vintage horror movie poster titling from the 1960's. It is a Capitals and smallcaps typeface, that really feels like a mix of three typefaces in one. While the Capitals and Smallcaps typesetting works to the effect of the original inspirations, each case also works well amongst itself independently, and having very different vibes. I've always been a huge fan of horror movies, and some of the lettering from vintage horror movie posters are so cool and alive, I only wish there were more of them recreated as display fonts.

Carot Display is made for book covers and posters, but will also shine in advertising and visual identity. The whole Carot system is built up from what has long been around; in any case, it was the intention: to evoke the already experienced visual reminiscences of today's spectacled people. We all have a tendency toward sentiment, which, with each new diopter, deepens to melancholy. Only good font can calm us down. I believe in the raw effect of “Carot” typefaces. Lasting Impression JNL was rendered from scans of a 1930s rubber stamp printing set. At small sizes it has the look of hand-stamped lettering. At larger sizes, the user will see jagged and angular lines giving the font a kind of retro-grunge look. This typeface was the model for the more cleanly-drawn Casual Friday JNL, also by Jeff Levine. Legitima is a text font family inspired by the types found in the 3rd edition of the Italian book La Cicceide Legitima, printed in 1695. William Caslon (1692-1766) laid the foundation for English typefounding, when he cut his first roman face in London in 1722. He modeled his designs on late seventeenth-century Dutch types; thus his typefaces are classified as Old Styles. The original Caslon punches have been preserved, enabling a perfect recutting of his faces. Notice the hollow in the apex of A and the two full serifs or beaks in the C. The italic capitals are irregular in their inclination. The Caslon font family is distinctive for use in subheadings or continuous text.

A concertina is a kind of musical instrument, not unlike an accordeon. I just liked the name; I have to admit I’m not a particular fan of accordeon music… Concertina is a beautiful handmade script font. A little rough, but elegant as well. It was made with a small Japanese brush pen on coarse paper. Concertina comes with double letter ligatures and end-letter alternates. To access the end-letter alternates, type the letter you want + space (and make sure to tick the ‘ligatures’ box in your OT environment).
