The 1939 sheet music for “Sea Dreams” had its title hand lettered in an unusual Art Deco style that employed many unusual character shapes and widths within the font design. A teardrop-shaped ‘D’, a slightly off-kilter ‘S’ and a number of other interesting variations became the model for Seahawk JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The term “Seahawk” is another name for an Osprey.

Vette Letters are thrilled to add maverick designer Dirk Uhlenbrock to the family, with the release of VLNL Bromfiets. Bromfiets (the Dutch word for moped) is a ‘holiday child’, the basic idea coming from a stop at a road junction in the Dutch coastal province of Zeeland. The Dutch signage, the black and white rings of traffic light poles, the symbols for brom- and snorfiets have always appealed to Dirk. While on vacation in Zeeland the first scribbles and digital drafts were created, always in mind that the typeface had to be striking, clear and friendly. The end result is more than that, a strong and instantly recognisable font with a matching dingbat weight full of icons and arrows. Stencil fonts have always interested Dirk, the informal character and the possible universal use as a paint- or spray-stencil on a wide variety of surfaces makes this type of font so interesting for me. The technically necessary dissolution of closed font contours always ensures a special aesthetic: What’HAT and HOW MUCH has to be removed or left, in order to make words easy to read and to avoid a fractal impression. Dirk Uhlenbrock has been working as graphic designer and illustrator in his hometown Essen, Germany for over 30 years. Always interested in typedesign he got in contact with Fontographer in 1996 and started to create and distribute loads of free fonts through his online platforms ‘Eyesaw’ and ‘Fontomas’. A bunch of these type experiments have been extented on request to complete fonts. Several years ago I was asked to do a sign for a rummage sale. To print the words RUMMAGE SALE, I took letters from some of the ornate fonts I was working on at the time. I liked the results, so made them into a font. Fonts from which the letters come include HippityDippity, Tuskcandy, Letunical, OakPark, WyomingStrudel, NeuAltisch, WyomingMacroni, WyomingPastad, and Rundigsburg. The original typeface had two variants of each letter, one on the upper-case keys and the other on the lower-case keys. The name of the original font, RummageSaleOne, acknowledged that a greater selection of letters was desirable but it was only with the upgrade of 2020 that the greater selection was added. The additional variants were added in two ways: as a separate typeface (RummageSale-Two) and also as OpenType stylistic alternatives.

Cora is a sans serif with an experimental bent, offering a large x-height, some contrast of stroke weight, and capitals inspired by classical lettering. The large x-height gives it a voice with a little more volume so that those in the back of the room have no trouble hearing. These typefaces are patterned after two members of a type family named Greco, released by Fundición Tipográfica Richard Gans of Madrid, Spain, in the 1920s. Melina Plain is a refined version of Greco Bold, and Melina Fancy is based on Greco Adornado, with the notable addition of a lowercase, which was not a part of the original design. Melina is based on two typefaces (ca. 1920) from the Fundición Tipográfica Richard Gans in Madrid, Spain. Nick Curtis first found Greco Adornado in a type specimen at the Library of Congress. It was a cap only design. He made a cut of the original (Melina Fancy) and created his own lowercase, and many other characters to support contemporary character sets. Later he came across Greco Bold, which had a lowercase, but he chose not to use it and instead, adapted his Melina Fancy to create Melina Plain.

Organic versus geometric are two different universes that converges on nature systems and has its reflection on this new sans serif typeface. Frambuesa is a half humanist-half geometric sans that merges decorative curves with straight lines looking for a balance.
