On occasion, when seeking retro source material for font designs, one can unearth interesting examples of typography that bridges decades with its ahead-of-its-time style. The songwriter credits on one particular piece of vintage sheet music had both the Art Deco influence but took on more of a techno look that was popularized in the 1980s. This hybrid of generations is the basis for Deco of Tomorrow JNL.

Here's another mosaic marvel from the New York subway system, to complement Midtown Tessie. This style is based on signage at the 34th Street station, with connections to Brooklyn. A full tile background is available at the bar position, and a marvelous meander can be found at the German double-s spot. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

An image spotted in an online auction online of a 1940 Milton Bradley child's activity set consisting of wooden letters formed the basis for School Activities JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Although the basic characters feature chamfered corners, the nature of bending the steel rule dies to form the letters to be cut from the wood provided rounded edges as well, creating their unique look.

In the DR Krapka Round typefamily, the pixel has a round shape. This unusual display face is another in a series of works based on the work of lettering artist Samuel Welo. The sinewy curves and radiant inline decoration give this typeface a cozy, warm and inviting charm. Named after the informal radio addresses popularized by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Kelpie is a hand-drawn typeface based on informal writing and includes 2 styles: regular and monoline. It is a full of energy font with the irregular look and slightly scrawled letterforms with long ascenders and descenders. Kelpie can look casual, open and friendly or even add an eerie undertone to your text. It is recommended to use for display titles and small amount of text, words or short phrases.

Scruff was designed by Timothy Donaldson in 1995. This cheerful, laid-back font is made out of a variety of different fragments - stripes, dots, zigzags and more, giving each character its own identity. When brought together into words and sentences, the figures create a playful chaos like that of a patchwork quilt. To bring out its individual details, Scruff is best used in headlines in larger point sizes or as initials.

This rollicking romp through the alphabet is based on an offering from the irrepressible M. Draim, seen in La Lettre dans le Décor & la Publicité Modernes, published by Monrocq Frères of Paris in 1932. Its animated and friendly demeanor will add personality to any headline it graces. This unique type treatment was born after working in a mixture between a pixel based font and a retro logo. With lot of details it looks great a bigger sizes, but you can also apply it to write long sentences or even as body text! This font was chose as the official online font of our favorite band Foo Fighters some time ago, when it was just a work in progress.

The font Simeon is based on a historic Armenian handwriting notrgir that was made popular in 1756-1757’s by Johann Michael Fleischman who used it for Johann Enschede’s typefoundry and Armenian handwritten capital letters from other European sources edited by a modern Armenian designer. It also contains style and time appropriate Bastardo-Latin and a stylized Cyrillic, complete with full set of Armenian characters and ligatures, required Latin ligatures.

Scratch was designed by Andrew Smith in 1995. It looks as thought many fine lines were drawn next to and over each other with a felt-tipped pen. Small bits of white peek out among the strokes and give the font its dynamic character. Flexible and sketchy, the forms are based on those of a classic sans serif cursive typeface. Scratch is meant exclusively as a headline or display font.

ZebraSkin is an exciting, contemporary display font, incorporating the distinctive markings of one of Africa's most striking animals. One style is available: ZebraSkin Aarde, based on the Aarde Black font. It is best used in conjunction with Aarde Black or Aarde Outline. Caesario is Mike Scarpitti's newest font, based on the famous inscriptory lettering on the Trajan column in Rome. After searching through many sources, he turned to the drawings of the original column lettering made by Frederic Goudy in 1936. The superior quality of these drawings combined with the Mike's faithful reproduction of the characters forms make Caesario the best available representation of the style of this famous incription.

The display typeface that is based on the shapes of traditional Chinese hieroglyphic characters. Designing the font for imitations in the Chinese style the author nevertheless demonstrates serious attitude and thoroughness using the table of keys of the regular Kaishu script. As a result the font looks stylistically authentic and genuine. The typeface was designed by Aleksandra Egorova, the young type designer from St. Petersburg, and released by ParaType in 2008 .

Helado is an elegant, modern sans-serif font, based on the idea to work as close as possible on the geometric forms of the circle and the square. Back in 2013 I released an all caps font called Rum Doodle. Rum Doodle is a really nice, really weird font with angular glyphs and a unique look. I decided that it would be nice to tweak this font a bit and design a lower case for it. The result is Chew On This. I chose that name for no apparent reason - so don’t make a fuss about it…

The Etalage-script has been drawn for the first time in the year 2000, based on a early 20th century lettering stencil with what farmer Boelema at Lalleweer stenciled his grainsacks. Eventually the script letter was developed as a typeface with a wink to the ‘lost’ displaytypes for the ‘display window’ of graphic designer Ariënne Boelens, who in exchange made the website www.lalleweer.nl. What originated the Ariënne should be evident now.

Suitable for headlines, subheads and short copy blocks, this decidedly Deco number is based on Willard T. Sniffin’s Hollywood, designed for American Type Founders in 1932. A few of the fussier details have been modified from the original to render a clean, streamlined and sophisticated face. All versions of this font include the Unicode 1250 Central European character set in addition to the standard Unicode 1252 Latin set.

Vonnes was designed by David Berlow working closely with Neville Brody on corporate redesign for Jim Von Ehre at Macromedia. Core weights are loosely based on Bauer’s Venus, 1907–1910. Berlow expanded the ideas behind the series to 56 fonts, the heart of the redesign. An offbeat typeface inspired by some of the wild lettering of comic creator Paul Coker, Jr. This typeface has that "Rankin/Bass" flavor and is tricked out with an extended language set and loads of characters in stylistic alternates & discretionary ligatures to randomize double letters and offer some interesting combinations for sets like La Li LL Lo, etc. Chorizo screams to be played with, and awaits to amuse you!

This sans-serif type family of two weights plus matching italics. Influenced by the geometric-style sans serif faces that were popular during the 1920s and 30s, the fonts are based on geometric forms that have been optically corrected for better legibility. Vitage has a functional look with a warm touch. It is manually hinted and optimized for screens, so it will be a good choice for Websites, eBooks or Apps.

Designed at Polygraphmash type design bureau in 1984 by Vladimir Yefimov, with the addition of demi and demi italic. Based on a hot-metal typeface (1962) by Moscow book designer Vadim Lazurski (1909–1994), inspired by the early 16th century typefaces of Italian Renaissance. The typeface is useful for text and display composition, in fiction and art books. An 'expert set' was added by ParaType (ParaGraph) in 1997.

Sheet music for the song "Beyond the Blue Horizon" from the motion picture "Monte Carlo" had the movie title in hand-lettering reminiscent of the Futura Black style, but with an inline stripe through each character. These few letter examples were the basis for Gambling Resort JNL and conjure up the Nouveau Riche spending their nights in Monte Carlo packing the roulette wheels, blackjack tables and slot machines.

The Submarine family is based on a custom designed typeface for website navigation and headlining purposes, hence its geometric structure. In contrast to most other typefaces, where increase of boldness of the lighter weights expands externally in the width, the Submarine heavier weights expand internally, leaving the length of words and texts pretty much the same. The open structure of the lighter weights make it reasonable text face as well.
