In May of this year, I went to Japan with my (then 11 year old) son Sam. It was his dream to visit Japan, probably because of my tall tales, stemming from the time I was a tour guide! Sam really wanted to try all kinds of Japanese delicacies and one day, when walking around Tokyo, we came across a little stall selling Taiyaki. Taiyaki are fish-shaped waffle/cakes with a red bean or sweet potato filling. They are really delicious! This nice ‘oriental looking’ font was made with a broken popsicle stick and Chinese ink. You are now wondering why I always use Chinese ink and not Japanese ink. Well, I have a stash of the Chinese stuff and it’ll last me a lifetime!

Back in the nineties I had a deck of Tarot cards. It was part interest and part curiosity, but I also liked the look of them. My readings were just for fun; I thought it was all a joke, but when people started to return for more readings (because what I had predicted actually happened), I quit. That was way out of my comfort zone! Fortune Teller is a nice brush font. I made it with one of my late father in law’s Chinese brushes and ink. For more than 70 years the 10-foot tall letters displaying the word FOSHAY have illuminated the Foshay Tower in the Minneapolis skyline. However, the typestyle has never been made into a font before. A book in the library of University of Wisconsin caught David Berlow’s attention. It was set in a clear text face - a predecessor of Bookman, cast by the Western Type Foundry who called it Custer. Upon noting how well the typeface worked in 6 and 7 points, he developed it into a member of the Reading Edge series specifically designed for small text on screen. Custer RE was a broad and approachable typeface drawn large on the body with a tall x-height to maximize its size when set very small.

A crumpet is a small griddle bread, mostly enjoyed in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. I have never had one, but I have heard of them and I like the name - which is probably Welsh in origin. Lemony Crumpet is a whimsical, handmade font. It is tall & thin, shaky and jumpy and I wouldn’t use it as a poster font because of its delicate properties, but it would look fantastic on book covers, product packaging and websites. Comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

Mesh Stitch has a hand-stitched look, with the capital letters/numbers being nine cross-stitches tall (+ about 3 stitches for accents). To make the font look authentic, I stitched some characters using wool and took photographs which were turned into glyphs. As a result, none of the cross-stitches are symetrical and some are at a slightly at an angle, because I didn't want the font to feel mechanical. As a result, the font has a cute, homely character to it. It is particularly good for large displays/headlines.

Innocent until proven otherwise, Olivita is a heavyweight interpretation of the Typewriter genre. Kostic Serif is a classic transitional typeface (like Baskerville, Bookman, Caslon, Times) with tall, clean characters and a large glyph set to support all European languages - Greek and Cyrillic script included. Kostic Serif is made with fairly large x-height, so the text is legible in very small sizes. Zoran began the work on Kostic Serif around 2002 and after completing Regular, Bold and matching italics, he wasn’t too pleased with the design, so he dropped further work on it to make other fonts. In 2010 Nikola came upon unfinished files for Kostic Serif, and decided to redesign the letters, while retaining basic proportions and widths that Zoran established earlier. When they were both pleased with the new look of the font, they made Medium and decided to add CE and Greek script to the glyph set, to make it pan-european.

We wanted to make an ultra-thin, tall font with a rough, hand-drawn look and ended up with more than we bargained for. To get the font we wanted we started by developing a source font for the basic letter shapes and we ended up with a whole bunch of variations of the basic style. Thus was born the new Ducatus family of fonts, starting with Ducatus Light which developed into the Medium and Heavy versions, and the Medium weight was ultimately used as the basis for the Ducatus Rough font, which was the goal of the project in the first place. Ducatus Rough was created by modifying Ducatus Medium in Photoshop using Gallery Effects and several other filter packages, and then redoing the outlines from scratch in Fontographer. A lot of work, but the result is just what we wanted.

Florian Fecher’s Lektorat font family is one for the books, and for the screens, and for the magazines. While an editorial’s main goals are to entertain, inform, and persuade, more should be considered. For example, clear divisions are necessary, not just from one article to the next, but in how each is positioned as op-ed or fact-based, infographic or table, vilifying or uplifting. From masthead to colophon, Lektorat has six concise text styles and 21 display styles to captivate, educate, and motivate within any editorial purpose. Magazines and related publications are notoriously difficult to brand and then to format accordingly. The research behind Lektorat focused on expression versus communication and what it takes for a great typeface to accomplish both tasks. In the changeover from the 19th to 20th century, German type foundry Schelter & Giesecke published several grotesque families that would become Lektorat’s partial inspiration. Experimentation with concepts from different exemplars gave birth to Lektorat’s manifest character traits: raised shoulders, deep incisions within highly contrasted junctions, and asymmetrical counters in a sans family. After thoroughly analysing magazine publishing and editorial designs, Florian discovered that a concise setup is sufficient for general paragraph text. So Lektorat’s text offering is concentrated into six total styles: regular, semibold, and bold with their obliques. Stylistic sets are equally minimal; an alternate ‘k, K’ and tail-less ‘a’ appear in text only. No fluff, no wasted “good intentions”, just a laser-like suite to focus the reader on the words.
