The Vitruvian Man is a world-renowned drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1487. The drawing depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man.The drawing is based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius in Book III of his treatise De Architectura. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the Classical orders of architecture. That's how "Leonardian" was buid as well: a quest for ideal proportions, a harmonious design springing up from a geometric "collision", circle and square's intersections.

"Tuong or Hat Boi is a form of Vietnamese classic opera, combining various elements of arts such as stage, music, fine art, literature, dancing, and martial arts. Older Tuong plays are usually about historical events or tales. SomaSkript is a natural extension to the basic Somatype font design, adding more variety to the family, all of which have similar features. Basically, by widening the uprights and maintaining the thin cross-bars it takes on more of a script-like quality, hence the name. Slanting the letters reinforces the script illusion and consequently brings a broader application to the font’s original format. When designing the Somatype alphabet originally, I always envisaged maximizing on its potential by creating an incised version. This variation not only emphasizes the implied script qualities within the name but brings out the softer, feminine side of the typeface. This evolutionary process creates a different looking font altogether and in turn the slanted version emphasizes the elegant quality even more so.

Alf R. Becker was a noted sign painter, designer and the creator of hundreds of unique alphabets which were published in the trade magazine Signs of the Times during the 1930s through the 1950s. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Media [and who is also the curator of the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati], Jeff Levine received some reference material on Becker's work. Becker displayed many of his type styles within decorative panels—a popular trend in the days when signs were hand-lettered. Using the reference material as a guide, Jeff has re-drawn twenty-six sign panels for adaptation to digital print work. While the designs in themselves are not thoroughly unique to Alf Becker, he has left behind some tangible examples of how sign painters embellished their lettering work. With the use of complementary colors and tones, these panels—joined with vintage lettering - classically recreate the warm and attractive advertising of years ago.

FF Mutual is a friendly geometric sans serif full of subtle, unexpected details. Designer Luis Bandovas drew inspiration from an unlikely source—the credits from one of his favorite childhood shows, Space 1999—and turned that spark into a typeface that is warm and approachable, but contemporary. Eigerdals features a smooth, brushed impression and a tall x-height. The characters are slightly top heavy in the heavier weights to give it a friendly feel. The Eigerdals family contains seven weights and their complementary italics. It contains some unique character traits that give the face a unique look, and the type family is incredibly versatile. The face is highly readable in extended text settings, and the bolder weights are perfect for display work. Eigerdals can be used in a variety of graphic settings. The Englishman William Caslon (1672–1766) first cut his typeface Caslon in 1725. His major influences were the Dutch designers Christoffel van Dijcks and Dirck Voskens. The Caslon font was long known as the script of kings, although on the other side of the political spectrum, the Americans used it as well for their Declaration of Independence. The characteristics of the earlier Renaissance typefaces are only barely detectable. The serifs are finer and the axis of the curvature is almost or completely vertical. The overall impression which Caslon makes is serious, elegant and linear. Next to Baskerville, Caslon is known as the embodiment of the English Baroque-Antiqua and has gone through numerous new interpretations, meaning that every Caslon is slightly different. American Type Founders presented a Caslon in 1905 which is true to the forms of the original. This font is relatively wide and comes complete with small caps and old style figures.

Nick Curtis's love affair with typography began when he was barely past adolescence, in a neighborhood alley of East Dallas. On a routine patrol for tossed treasures, he came across a type specimen catalog: a big, fat green binder displaying hundreds of fonts! He was hooked. Curtis's career has taken him from production art to graphic design to art direction, but type has always remained his graphic passion, especially the provocative designs produced from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. Curtis's inspiration for ITC CuppaJoe comes from Art Deco lettering, but not from the typical sources. Depending upon your age or your interest in early twentieth-century package design ITC CuppaJoe might look familiar. Its foundation is the label art for Bokar, A&P's premium coffee during the 1930s. Curtis built on the gently sweeping curves and bold angular strokes of the original coffee-can lettering to create a distinctive typeface that commands attention. Rich, full-bodied, satisfying - now that's a ITC CuppaJoe!

Beardstown is solid, hardworking & no-nonsense. It may be a little gritty & rough around the edges, but it can also be open, warm and welcoming. Beardstown is a little Midwestern town on a river with a town square where you can buy comic books from a spinner rack at the front of the drugstore and read 'em with a root beer float from the soda counter in the back. The Beardstown font is perfect for t-shirts, sports graphics, beer cans, trading cards, carnival posters and record albums. But that’s it. I mean, you could use it on foofy hipster stuff like organic produce, vegan meat substitutes, electric car accessories or mountain bike parts, but you risk Beardstown coming over there to kick your butt.
