Freehand 471 is the Bitstream version of Cascade Script by Matthew Carter. Released by Mergenthaler Linotype in 1965, this design is based on an earlier type by the Ludlow foundry. It's a dark, disconnected script with angular forms. It seems written by heavy marker and thus suitable for informal posters and signage and for advertising and display typography as well. Central European, Cyrillic, and Greek Monotonic characters were designed by Oleg Karpinsky. Released by ParaType in 2011.

Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. XLeafMeAlone is a collection of leaf silhouettes from common Indiana trees based on actual leaves. Various leaves, selected for their good looks not their intelligence, were scanned and hand-traced. Some species, such as some oaks, are over-represented because they are more picturesque than others, such as apple or peach. LeafMeAlone was featured in the “Type Drawer” column of Personal Publishing (later renamed Business Publishing--I do not know if it still exists) in November of 1990.

Rhaetic is largely accepted as being closely related to Etruscan.

The figures look as though they were written with a broad-tipped pen on rough paper. Prushkov is the first typeface that I made. Its name comes from the town I lived in at the time. The design was inspired by both geometric typefaces like Futura, and didone fonts like Bodoni. Its aim (perhaps quite bold) is to blend high contrast with mathematical excellence. Prushkov will work well as a display font, both in uppercase and lowercase. It has a wide array of stylistic alternates for all of the capitals and some lowercase glyphs too.

PT Quadrat Grotesk™ was designed for ParaType in 2001 by Vladimir Pavlikov. An expanded sans serif with square letterforms due to what the face was named. Based on the shapes of one of old Russian wooden types. Wooden types were used for placard display composition at large sizes. Their printouts retained wooden texture and traces of handling. These features are reflected in the shapes of Quadrat Grotesk. It is a good typeface for display and advertising typography.

A Bloomer is a crusty loaf of bread with rounded ends. I don’t know why I chose this name, but it may have to do with the fact that my wife signed up for a bread baking course. Bloomer is a rounded, hand made cartoon-ish font. It will look especially good on product packaging, but any design in need of some authenticity could do with a bit of Bloomer! Typefaces with very thin verticals and fat, square serifs were popular in the 19th century for display. Hollywood helped associate this style with the Old West, but reference books identify some of it as Italian style. WyomingSpaghetti, part of an extended family of typefaces, has a name which combines these two associations. Most typefaces of this type are very condensed, but this one is not. The letter o is nearly circular, which is rather unusual in this style.

The other day, a couple of kids at work (I work as a kindergarten teacher!) played this game where they were detectives. Not the usual detective, but someone who worked for cookies and biscuits! They called themselves The Biscuit Kids, and I knew instantly that I had to make a font with that name!
