During a ‘type walk’ at the 2007 AtypI conference in Brighton, typographer Phil Baines pointed out what he considered to be a particularly egregious example of over-decorative art nouveau lettering on a war memorial. This made me determined to use it as the basis for a font. Released in Opentype, it now features ligatures, swashes and alternates. It’s not certain if the curved top bars on the E and F are a feature of the original design or due to climbers using them as footholds, but I incorporated them anyway. It has recently been used for invitations and supporting print material for formal charity dinners at the House of Lords.

Although brass line rules were a common feature in almost every vintage type catalog, these were recreated from those by the Franklin Type Foundry. The extravagant Odin was designed by Bob Newman in 1972. Its figures display constructed basic forms and when set into words, the typeface builds closely set lines. Linotype Scott Mars, from German designer Hellmut Bomm, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. Bomm constructed this typeface from a consciously limited repertoire of forms, producing a strictly constructed font with a cool, technical look. Worthy of note are also the exalted numeral forms and the unusual size relation of the lower case and capital letters. Scott Mars is best used for headlines and short to middle length texts in point sizes of 10 or larger.

SK Merih is a geometric sans serif and semi-condensed font family. Produced with a clean and modern design approach, SK Merih can be easily used in titles, body texts and many points you may need in design. SK Merih takes its name from Mars. Although Merih is not used today, it is the Turkish equivalent of Mars. SK Merih consists of 12 fonts and 5244 glyphs in total and has multilingual support. Roughwork was developed in response to repeated requests for a set of initials which looked like sketches of a font in development. So we took our True Golden font and reverse-engineered the lines and arcs needed to define the character shapes and the result has the look of original typeface drawings.

Screenplay JNL was modeled from the signage seen in an old photo of the RKO movie studios building circa the 1930s. This multi-line lettering is so classic of the Art Deco period. For best effect and readability, use wider spacing between letters. For single words or initials, regular spacing should do fine.

This family was created inspired from the Garamond patern set of fonts used by S. Millanges "imprimeur ordinaire du Roy", in Bordeaux, circa 1580-1590. Especially for reprint L'instruction des curés (Instructions to parish priests), from Jean Gerson. The set contains two styles, Normal and Italic, the second one with a lot of caps and ligatures variants. The initials, except a few decorated letters (six in total) where only large caps, covering no more than three lines. Added are a few fleurons. It can be used as variously as web-site titles, posters and flyers design, publishing texts looking like ancient ones, or greeting cards, all various sorts of presentations, as a very elegant and legible font... This font supports strong enlargements as easily as small size (legible from 6 points when printed) remaining very smart and fine. Its original cap height is about five millimeters. Decorated letters like 1512 Initials, 1550 Arabesques, 1565 Venetian, can be used with this family without anachronism.

Julia Child once said: the secret to great french cooking is butter, butter, butter. Thus, we present to you Manteiga - butter in Portuguese! - a typeface for heart-melting, word-spreading goodness. The idea we had was to play with brush lettering - a style we love - and go as far as we can with the shapes of the letters while finding balance between positive and negative space. We wanted biiiig personality. And small inconsistencies - the ones that add texture and life to lettering. We left extensive OpenType features and technical stuff aside for a moment, adding later only what we thought was necessary, like different shapes for the Q, a and g - for example. All caps setting was something we wanted from the beginning. In text case, the x-height is rather short for a brush script, and this lends a quirky voice. Spacing is ultra tiiiiight so don’t go too small, but make it as big as you want! Ah! And there are some fun dingbats thrown in for good measure.

One would think the whole hippy thing would have died out after the knighting of Mick Jagger and the selling out of the The Who. Not at Canada Type. We still occasionally read Burroughs and Ginsberg, listen to Dylan and Hendrix, and use the backyard to pretend (um, like run barefoot with the dog). And we're always happy to make another psychedelic font. This one is based on an early 1970s film type that went by the names Hoopla and Scorpio. Doobie is a typical hippy font that uses the simplest elements of the art nouveau genre. Bubbly and wavy, Doobie exudes an almost child-like innocence, the ever laid back, optimistic simplicity of flower power. It is right at home alongside the many other psychedelic fonts that make Canada Type the definite home of the groovy alphabet. Far out!

I love markets, especially the farmer’s markets with fresh produce and home made cheese. Too bad I need to travel a long way to get to one, as there is only a ‘regular’ market in my hometown - you know, with cheap duvets, ‘local’ fruit like bananas and a guy selling books about the end of times. I thought it would be great to create a font family you could actually use on a market. Hence Market Square. Market Square consists of 4 different fonts (each with its own Italic style), ranging from a fat marker font to a thin, squarish font. Each of them oozes freshness and authenticity and they were designed to complement each other. The cherry on top is the cute doodle font, loaded with fresh produce and seafood - just like you’d see on a Market Square.

Sina is a strong, sturdy and self-confident serif accented face. Distinct ascenders and descenders in classical proportions ensure pleasant reading. Robust but assertively warm, it recalls and references the virtues of early classical printing types but presents a distinctly contemporary look. With its even text flow it works very well for long texts. It is also great for headlines and in larger styles. An extended, fine-tuned range of weights renders it suitable for almost every application. Sina comes in 12 styles and in OpenType format. This unusual take on a typical woodtype typeface is based on a 1950s Stenso lettering template and, appropriately, takes its name from a small town in Texas not far from Dallas, locally noted for its grand Victorian homes.
