Organic versus geometric are two different universes that converges on nature systems and has its reflection on this new sans serif typeface. Frambuesa is a half humanist-half geometric sans that merges decorative curves with straight lines looking for a balance. Mayonez is a typeface with rational structure and axis but softened with rounded contours and cupped serifs, getting as result a balance between seriousness and friendliness. The shapes have a soft appearance but without lacking definition. A more fluid structure influenced by calligraphy is proposed for the italic variants, in this case the uppercase letters adopted a simplified semiserif structure that works better with the lowercase letters. Also the figures are very different from the roman version and follow more faithfully the italic style. In an attempt to give Cyrillic lowercase romans a fresh look, symmetrical serifs inherited from the versal tendency are mostly avoided thus getting simpler structures closer to the latin forms. This type is good for commercial and editorial uses like advertising, packaging and pages with showy headlines where a warm touch wants to be given. The character set includes a group of figures and currency symbols with standard height and another suited to match better with lowercase letters. Mayonez was selected to be part of the Communication Arts Typography annual in 2015.

Zuzana Licko's goal for Fairplex was to create a text face which would achieve legibility by avoiding contrast, especially in the Book weight. As a result of its low contrast, the Fairplex Book weight is somewhat reminiscent of a sans serif, yet the slight serifs preserve the recognition of serif letterforms. When creating the accompanying weights, the challenge was to balance the contrast and stem weight with the serifs. To provide a comprehensive family, Licko wanted the boldest weight to be quite heavy. This meant that the "Black" weight would need more contrast than the Book weight in order to avoid clogging up. But harmonizing the serifs proved difficult. The initial serif treatments she tried didn't stand up to the robust character of the Black weight. Several months passed without much progress, and then one evening she attended a talk by Alastair Johnston on his book "Alphabets to Order," a survey of nineteenth century type specimens. Johnston pointed out that slab serifs (also known as "Egyptians") are really more of a variation on sans serifs than on serif designs. In other words, slab serif type is more akin to sans-serif type with serifs added on than it is to a version of serif type. This sparked the idea that the solution to her serif problem for Fairplex Black might be a slab serif treatment. After all, the Book weight already shared features of sans-serif types. Shortly after this came the idea to angle the serifs. This was suggested by her husband, and was probably conjured up from his years of subconscious assimilation of the S. F. Giants logo while watching baseball, and reinforced by a similar serif treatment in John Downer's recent Council typeface design. The angled serifs added visual interest to the otherwise austere slab serifs. The intermediate weights were then derived by interpolating the Book and Black, with the exception of several characters, such as the "n," which required specially designed features to avoid collisions of serifs, and to yield a pleasing weight balance. A range of weights was interpolated before deciding on the Medium and Bold weights.

Initially commissioned in the summer of 2009 for a popular North American ice cream parlor chain we cannot name, Tuba started with a reconceptualization of a somewhat flawed '72 alphabet idea by Swiss graphic designer Erwin Poell. During the back-and-forth of the custom project, other ideas seeped into the design, mostly from other Canada Type fonts, like Fab, Jonah, Jojo and Teaspoon. The end result was what the client called a "sugar circuit trigger alphabet". This now is the retail version of that project. Tuba's main style is a straight-forward mix of 60s/70s art nouveau ideas and late-70s/early-80s tube aesthetic. The Highlight and Outline styles are almost necessary spinoffs for this kind of typeface. And the all-caps Black style is a nod to the fat font fad of the past couple of years. All styles contain many alternates – so many that each style is almost two fonts in one. Make sure to check out the character sets for a few nice and useful surprises. Life's too short. A personalized cursive written with the pointed brush The strange name of this font means nothing other than ”brush,“ but only the Dutch understand it. The typeface is spirited, amusing and flashy. I made the handwritten original of DeBorstel Brush quickly and without interruption with a pointed brush. In the capitals, DeBorstel Brush appears to be almost too balanced for handwriting. In contrast, the lower case letters are intentionally very individual and uneven. A bit more life is added to the typeface with ligatures activated which are constructed with alternative letter forms — and as a result, a number of problematic letter-combinations are improved. And if this typeface is still not lively enough for you, the additional alternative character forms a e g i j l n o s t u z are available with the Open Type-Function ”Discretional Ligatures“. DeBorstel Brush is suitable for all European languages. It includes ”Unicode Latin Extended-A,“ for Central and Eastern Europe incl. Turkish, and even Cyrillic and Greek, too.

EraMax Radial is a geometric sans serif meant to be set BIG, for big statements. It's the perfect face for signage, packaging posters, branding and so on and on, where a strong voice is needed. It has a modern look that will work in a retro setting. Or, should that be a vintage look that will work in a modern setting. This is the first of what is to be a series to typefaces inspired by the original hand painted signage found in the TH&B train station in Hamilton Ontario. This classic Art Deco, Or, more precisely, Art Moderne building designed by the New York architectural firm of Fellheimer and Wagner and completed in 1933. The original lettering included about 75% of the uppercase letters only, so the balance of the uppercase and the lowercase plus all the other glyphs were extrapolated from the look and feel of the existing uppercase letters. Figures are based on the numerals on the station clock, with adjustments made to harmonised with the letters.

Switched On and Switched Off where two fonts developed by placing points on a pre-defined square grid template. The experiment was to explore all the variations possible by just using straight connecting lines on a grid. I stumbled on the final concept, almost accidentally, and was amazed by the numerous possibilities. Both designs where created to work together. By adjusting the stroke and inline proportions between the two fonts, I was able to achieve a good overall color balance between 'Switched On' (dark letters on a light background), and the 'Switched Off' design as a knockout treatment (light letters on a dark background). Used in this way, both fonts visually appear similar in overall weight and proportion. They harmonize well together. Used separately, they make for some interesting visual effects and headline treatments. The fonts are best used at large point sizes, but they are still legible in a variety of smaller sizes. I think that by experimenting with these two fonts one can achieve some stunning visual effects. Explore and have fun.

Gainsborough - a clean-cut display pack. Gainsborough is a display combo pack of three styles and extra swooshes. Gainsborough fonts are straightforward with characteristic clarity. Blacker mono was developed out of a brief by Isabella Ahmadzadeh, by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Francesco Canovaro for the editorial project "A beautiful mistake" by OFFF Tlv in 2022. It is a monospaced version of our typeface Blacker, bringing its "evil serif" aesthetics in the realm of typewriter and coding typefaces. In designing these, usually the letterforms are deformed to better fill the space, but in Blacker Mono only the serifs are modified to balance letters, while letter skeletons are kept consistent with the ones of the original Blacker family. The new typeface family Vida was specifically designed for Czech Television in the framework of a competition for a new logo in summer 2006. The drawing of each letter form differs finely in its logic, which is a feature invisible at first. It is constructed on a puristic base, but it doesn't reject the natural anomalies already known from ages of experience with latin alphabet. That's why e. g. upper left section of 'n' is constructed differently from that of 'r', similarly as 'd' doesn't repeat right-bottom ending after 'u', '9' is not inverted '6'. Such details improve reading in continuous text. The behavior of all weights is consistent on CRT, plasma or LCD screens due to monolinear design; the lightest weight doesn't fade, the darkest isn't blurred, all is legible and clear in smallest sizes. Stem connections and endings were adjusted to avoid undesirable optical darkening. The goal we desired was to achieve balance appearance in both electronic and printed form.

FWD Egyptian Tower is a designers stack-able Display family best purchased as one package. The four versions can be manipulated in your favorite graphics or sign making application to achieve the different effects as shown in the font family ad designs. All fonts are tightly spaced and are very often intentionally overlapped creating a balance for each very unique wider bottomed character. Being stack-able, the designer can duplicate the original text layer and by changing the font on the lower of the two layers to another of the family can then add another available effect. This can be repeated to add other of the available effects. Then by converting the text of the lower text layers to curves or outlines and welding the characters of the words together, the overlaps can be eliminated. This process is fairly common practice for a graphic designer and quite easy once done a few times.

The flower children of Canada Type are at it again. This time we went above and beyond the call of duty and right into the land of reconstruction in order to make this font. When we saw a few letters from an early 1970s film type called Jefferson Aeroplane, we had the sudden urge to bring their beauty to digital life. But since further research revealed no more letters or information, we just had to "wing" the rest of this Aeroplane. Now this Genie is out of the lava lamp, and it's nothing short of groovy. A few symbols and alternates come within the font, so make sure to check out the very full character set. We love this font so much that we couldn't help but play with it for a week. Boutiera is an upright and soft vintage script with a modern twist. Its main characteristics are bouncy baseline, round forms and bumpy stems. These qualities gives Boutiera its casual, friendly and handmade looks. It has three weights to give contrast and options to your typographic elements and designs. Boutiera has two sets of Upper cases; Slightly swashy and more basic one. The more basic set can be used in all caps. The first plain weight of Cutoff was designed in 2005 to be used in Miele, an independent Italian free magazine. The need was for an elegant, unusual and legible semi-serif with contemporary flavour. I was fascinated by the deconstructivist work of Jeff Keedy (Hard Times Thick), Phil Baines (Can You, You Can) and Otl Aicher (Rotis), so my aim was to get the feeling of a cut transitional typeface; at the same time felt the exigence to work on the whole shape of the glyphs, in order to soften the “90s deconstructivist” effect and obtain a more balanced and readable design. In the last years I further worked on the typeface adding the other styles, extending the character set and refining the letterforms. Finally the precious collaboration with URW++ brought in 2010 to a complete OpenType Pro font family, with multilingual and advanced typographic features. Fulvio Bisca, July 2010
