Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass. Sardines is a project by Jacques Le Bailly aka Baron von Fonthausen. This original version is the one that saw the light as a monospaced font student project and which would eventually grow into Vette Letters’ largest font family (see VLNL Neue Sardines). Sardines is an eclectic mash of classic curves and mathematical measurements, leaving a very distinct typographic flavor. While most of our type is market-fresh, this one comes out of the can, but it’s delicious nonetheless. And it’s great for adventurous BBQ-ing!

New Clear Era is part of a large ongoing project investigating classicism and legibility. The regular version is the base font. Numerous permutations will be performed on this underlying skeleton. Also investigated are the ideas of an extended type family, and trying to understand what makes a contemporary legible, serif typeface. The Mix versions combine characters from the Roman and Display to make quirky fonts that can be comfortably used for setting text. Mix One is the most quirky; Mix Three is the least.

DF Riga is a minimal bitmap typeface which works very well in small sizes both on your screen and on paper. But... if you want to express its deep beauty, use it in display sizes and the smell of ink is there. These typefaces (DF-A BIT, DF-Riga and DF-Dudok) owe their existence to the excellent letterpress printing of Hanneke Briër at the Grafisch Centrum Groningen. POWERPLAY a monospace lowercase alphabet with a 3D twist. Designed by André Toet in 1976 (during his study at Central School of Art & Design, London, UK) and he redesigned this in 2011. The name Powerplay is based on the Battersea Power Station, London. Kanna Aoki had fairy tales in mind when she designed MVB Greymantle. She drew dots with a felt pen to build up the forms, giving them their particular rough character. The “Extras” font contains a set of whimsical illustrations, including a portrait of Greymantle—her 18-pound cat, a set of curly initial caps, and border parts.  MVB Greymantle has been spotted on numerous children's books, in magazines, in salad dressing advertisements, and on food packaging.

Konrad Kachelhofen was a printer in the city of Leipzig beginning around 1483. He printed many works by contemporary authors and also many of the classics. He acquired an unusually large amount of typefaces for his shop, a place that included a wine bar and book store. This particular face is based on the Typ.8:170G GfT101 Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke. He probably died in 1529 after passing his business on to his son-in-law Melchior Lotter.

PT Quadrat Grotesk™ was designed for ParaType in 2001 by Vladimir Pavlikov. An expanded sans serif with square letterforms due to what the face was named. Based on the shapes of one of old Russian wooden types. Wooden types were used for placard display composition at large sizes. Their printouts retained wooden texture and traces of handling. These features are reflected in the shapes of Quadrat Grotesk. It is a good typeface for display and advertising typography.

Frederic Goudy designed National Old Style Roman in 1916. It is loosely based on a logo he lettered for the National Biscuit Company in 1901. Steve Matteson expanded on Goudy’s original by designing a bold, semibold and matching italics. While much of Goudy’s work is strongly influenced by Venetian types of the 15th and 16th centuries - this design has a truly American quality about it. The design is useful for text or headlines that captures a sense of Americana.

This family takes its inspiration from two early Art Deco faces from Germany. The Normal version is based on Dynamo, designed by K. Sommer for Ludwig & Mayer in 1930, while the Narrow version is based on Stadion, designed by Erhard Grundeis for Die Schriftguß AG in 1929. Their common design motifs epitomize the Age of Streamline. Both versions include the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, with localization for Lithuanian, Moldovan and Romanian.

Isabella was designed by Hermann Ihlenburg in 1892 for MacKellar, Smiths and Jordan, one of many type houses that were later amalgamated into American Type Founders. As testimony to its long-lived appeal, Isabella was one of the first PostScript® language typeface releases (in 1988) of Agfa Compugraphic. With its unmistakable 19th-century characteristics - swirls, loops, and surprising letter shapes - Isabella is a natural for display situations that demand high drama or, dare we say, melodrama.

Spotted for sale online, a partial set of antique tin stencils from France had a distinctively handmade look about them. Many of the characters were inconsistently wider than others, some characters were missing and one was damaged. Despite the obvious flaws, the image of these stencils served as the model for a digital font revival once the characters took on a more uniform appearance. French Stencil Serif JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

On April 20, 1950, film comedian Jerry Lewis indulged his love of cameras by opening up Jerry Lewis’ Camera Exchange on Vine Street in Hollywood. It closed in 1951. Thanks to an image preserved within newsreel footage of the shop’s grand opening night, a glimpse of the post-Art Deco signage with its unusual, block style lettering inspired a digital version.
