Created by Swedish designer Bo Berndal in 1999, Linotype Dala Text can best be described as a softer, friendlier blackletter. Blackletter refers to typefaces that evolve out of Northern Europe's medieval manuscript tradition. Often called gothic, or Old English, these letters are identified by the traces of the wide-nibbed pen stroke within their forms. Linotype Dala Text most resembles the fraktur type of blackletter. Fraktur types were popular text faces in Northern Europe until the 20th century. Inspired by Swedish folklore, this fraktur is much softer and rounder than most examples. Its connection to the Scandinavian folkloric tradition makes Linotype Dala perfectly suited for such texts as fairy tales, medieval stories, and other things that might appeal to a child's sense of adventure. To strengthen the medieval fairy tale look, use Linotype Dala Text together with other elements of the Linotype Dala family: Library's Linotype Dala Pict and Linotype Dala Border. I'm happy to present you my new Romanesque font from the Codex Gigas. The manuscript was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. The codex was written in a handwriting atypical for the 13th century, which is actually a late version of the Carolingian minuscule. Texts about repentance and exorcism were written in large Majuscule (Square Capitals (Imperial Roman capitals written with a brush)). Majuscules first incised in stone more than two millennia ago, married to minuscule letterforms that evolved from manuscript hands of the eighth and ninth centuries. Majuscule font is the name given to a type of decorative upper-case letters used in inscriptions and, typically, at the start of a section of text in medieval manuscripts. They are characterized by their straight forms unlike rounded in Lombardic capitals with thick, curved stems. Majuscule capitals were also used to write words or entire phrases. The text is divided into words, punctuation marks are used consistently – periods indicate the end of a sentence and the middle of a phrase. Khatt tries to mimic the concept behind the meaning of the Arabic word Khatt: a straight horizontal line. The word Khatt is also the word for calligraphy in the Arabic language. Even though Khatt is a cursive style font it offers clearly distinguished and visually unified letter shapes in every position of a word. Khatt supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with five weights, regular, medium, bold, light, and ultra-light. Each weight has normal and left-slanted “italic” styles. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style and utilizes varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter in an Arabic text. Khatt includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Katts’s soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are positioned with most of them appearing on similar lower or upper positions to emphasize they are not part of letters.

Tokoloshe is a name in African mythology for a mischievous leprechaun-like figure that loves practical jokes and tricking people. There are many books of such African stories, for example Tales of the Tokoloshe by Pieter Scholtz. The letter shapes that I used in the Tokoloshe font have inspiration from two sources: -- the spiky character of the font was derived from the wonderfully imaginative, wooden carvings of the Makonde people of beings called "shetani". The word "tokoloshe" is used by other tribes, but from his behaviour, he is certainly a type of shetani. -- some of the letter shapes were informed by Art Deco styles of fonts, for example: Kunjani, Black Tie SF, Selznick Normal, Zaire SF, Binner Gothic and ITC Anna. But the Tokoloshe font, like its namesake, is much more freespirited. Use this font whenever you want to suggest the rich artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of Africa. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). Inspired by the old Stephenson Blake Caps only font Algerian from 1908, this version, named Algerian Mesa, has been freshened up with a new matching lowercase. The original Algerian, on page 142 of the 1908 Stephenson Blake specimen book, was a small caps to a more decorative lining caps and the plain black version, without the shadow line, was named Gloria. Also on page 142 of the 1908 Stephenson Blake specimen book is a shaded Latin font that gave me the idea for the Alt version of Algerian Mesa. The Alt version works well at smaller point sizes combined with the regular Algerian Mesa font on the same page. New for 2016 were Opentype features including original alternates, oldstyle numerals and case sensitive forms, also new is a fully usable Alt version. New for 2022 are the higher x-height, 90% small caps, 80% small caps and all new italic versions. Also new for 2022 are straight sided accent marks replacing the flared or curved accents. While Algerian Mesa includes some alternates our related Tavern font will still remain the version with more alternates and more weights.

This font began its life as a project to design a T-shirt for a student group on a large midwestern university. It has now grown up into a unicode font, including Greek and Cyrillic. It has that look and feel of the T-shirts that are ubiquitous on the campuses of colleges and universities over the world. Crafted in the best tradition of the geometric sans-serif, Rondana is a typographic tribute to the the retro-futuristic aesthetics of the 1960s and 70s, as well as an exercise in purity of line. However, its spirit is decidedly non-bauhausian, since its strokes intentionally deviate from the dull, obvious, ruler-and-compass construction; its arcs and curves being much more complex, tending towards a slightly square shape, imbued with subtle modulations. This sums up to a more organic, flowing, extroverted personality than the one just expected from the use of plain, simple geometry. Another feature is the conscious use of non-standard shapes for many signs, that are quite legible but somewhat unexpected, such as the E, the g and the ampersand; making Rondana an excellent display face and also giving a particular flavor to the text composed in it, especially in its italic variants —which are, by the way, designer italics in their own right and not just an oblique version of the roman. Rondana comes in twelve variants comprising a wide spectrum of weights, allowing for an extremely diverse range of expression.

I regard Sabio as an evolutionary face. By this I mean that it merges elements of script and Roman design into one elegant whole. The design was 'evolved' somewhere between these two classic approaches. The resulting family of faces makes an excellent display family, but is also clear and legible at small sizes and can be used as a text face with a distinctive flair. Sabio is a wonderfully flexible face that can sit happily alongside artwork that owes its inspiration to any era from the Art Deco onwards. The regular form is gently and subtly oblique, and the glyphs have a slight hint of swash about them. Alternate and perpendicular forms are also offered. The regular, alternate and perpendicular forms are all in turn offered in regular, and bold weights as well as in a condensed form. All in all Sabio is a humanist face with which almost anything can be done offering flair and elegance for almost any project. Arkeo BT is designer Brian Sooy's first typeface family published by Bitstream. Given very few design elements to work with, Brian has designed a bitmap font that is unique and very readable. There are three widths, Condensed, Regular and Extended. In our opinion, pixels never looked so good. Arkeo performs equally well on screen and as on paper. The OpenType versions include an extended character set featuring oldstyle figures, fractions and additional f-ligatures. Design was begun in late 2001 and completed in 2002. Sooy asked Bitstream to critique, which we did gladly. We also added additional characters for OpenType. This included alternate figure set, an extended set of fractions and additional f-ligatures. Sooy used preliminary versions for setting parts of the TypeCon 2002 material and website.

Franciszek Otto of Poland designed Linotype Notec in 1999. Linotype Notec is a low-tech" (or even "no tech!") typeface. By embracing handwriting's spontaneity, it has gotten as far away from technology as it can. Classified as an "inky"-style script face, for lack of a better term, Linotype Notec's informal design seems immediately artful and full of expression. Its irregularity and unexpectedness enlivens any composition, similar to how jazz or modern dance animate a room. Quite full of "ink," Linotype Notec's "strokes" are written in a sort of short-note-handwriting-style, which a slow-writing, thoughtful humanist might theoretically scribble to himself late at night. Another 48-cut family from a typeface system which originally arose from the need to simply explain to some publishers what it is “serif, sans-serif, egyptian”, etc. including their style variations. Over time, the Trivia became quite popular, which was her goal. Bramante™ is an original display font by LetterPerfect Fonts, designed by Garrett Boge in 2020. It is modeled after a fifteenth-century inscription in the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome. The name is a tribute to the pre-eminent Renaissance architect Donato Bramante, whose Tempietto (1502, San Pietro in Montorio) marked the beginning of the High Renaissance in Rome. In 1503 he was named lead architect for the new St. Peter's Basilica, which was completed by Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini a century later. Based on the pervasive use of Adobe Trajan as a classical-inspired titling face, LetterPerfect offers this Renaissance revival of imperial Roman capitals as an alternative with additional refinement and personality. While the even strokes of sans serif types eventually tire the eyes in long texts, the marked stroke contrast of Nautilus lends the type its legibility. The characters were drawn with a broad tipped pen, and like an antiqua type, the forms of Nautilus display a variety of elements. The narrow figures with relatively large spaces between them create an overall open appearance and allow a large quantity of text to fit into a small space. This is a 2023 redesign of Bronzo, originally designed by Rick Valicenti and Mouli Marur in 1991. With this redesign, Bronzo now has 6 new weights, for a total of 9, and 587 more glyphs than it was able to in 1991. Bronzo appears to move forward, yet remain still, via a center stroke that only sticks out on the left, a tense curve that only happens on the right, and a width that sits uncomfortably between square and rectangle. Those three things, combined with a balanced light to dark ratio, are what makes Bronzo appear tense and ready. Bronzo accepts Modernist ideals of minimal, rational construction—but it also adopts luxuriant shapes over Modernism’s sandblasted neutrality. It includes a selection of ink drips and smudges, that are the “mark” of a hand done entry. Lagos was created because of the lack of African-inspired fonts that are truly modern without being partly art-deco in origin. I wanted to make a vigorous, sharp-edged font that reflects the energy and dynamism of modern Africa. The lines of the font combine the sharp angularity of African rocks and mountains with the smooth fluidity of Africa's snake-black rivers. The font is supplied in two styles, Lagos Regular and Lagos Light. Lagos Light is not a simple, mechanical modification of Lagos Regular. The outlines and proportions have been subtly modified to accommodate the lighter weight. Lagos contains a full 256 character set (upper and lower case, punctuation, diacritical characters, special symbols and numerals), in which all characters have been fully kerned and letter-spaced.

Cruickshank is a decorative typeface from the late Victorian period. The upper case includes several letters with swash strokes, extending well below the baseline, as found in the original design. Alternatives to the swash caps are provided. The lower case contains small caps of simpler design. The face was designed by William W. Jackson and released by MacKellar, Smiths and Jordan Type Foundry of Samson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1886. MS&J was founded originally as Binny & Ronaldson in 1796 and later known as The Johnson Type Foundry. Cruickshank has a strong late Victorian flavor without the extravagance of so many fonts of the period. In its simplicity and clarity, it may be seen as a precursor to the Art Nouveau style that would develop a decade later.

Boho is Coto Mendoza’s first Script font family, which is based on gestual calligraphy with Cola pen. While watching the 1947 holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street”, one scene in particular presented a chance to develop a retro type design. ‘Kris Kringle’ suggests to a mother visiting with her child in the Macy’s toy department to try Gimbel’s for a toy she couldn’t find at the store. The news of this behavior reaches Mr. Macy himself, who embraces the practice as a brilliant marketing strategy. A number of departments are then presented with reference books containing competitor ads, and the visual of the cover stating “R.H. Macy & Co. Shopping Guide for the Convenience of Our Customers” shows on screen. The thin, Art Deco sans serif monoline with a few serif-like hooks added onto some characters became the basis for Shopping Guide JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Museum Tertia Cursive is inspired by a beautiful set of 126 matrices in the Swedish Norstedts type collection. These types were probably manufactured in Germany before 1750. The matrices are part of a set imported to Sweden by J.P. Lindh from Breitkopf & Härtel 1818. Now this exquisite design is available again, thanks to type designer Torbjörn Olsson. The superfamily Pepi and Rudi is based on playful experimentation with basic geometric shapes - the circle, rectangle and triangle - elements that laid the foundations for typographic Modernism.
