A ‘Leaden Sky’ is a dark grey sky without clouds. We don’t see too many of them here in Holland, as we usually have lots of clouds. Yesterday, however, the sky turned a sinister greyish green and it spewed out an an enormous amount of hailstones the size of walnuts. Leaden Skies is a handmade, all caps display font. I made it with a brush and Chinese ink. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs.

Linotype Contacta is part of the Take Type Library, which features winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Ralf Weissmantel designed this font to display no stroke contrast at all. Instead of using conventional letter forms, Contacta is a more designed-oriented font, with some characters recognizable only in context, not necessarily at first glance. The technical, unconventional forms look almost like a maze, especially when set together. This font is not suitable for text but makes a unique impression in logos and headlines.

It was used in parts of Transylvania until the 1850s, although it was banned by Istvan, the first Christian king of the Hungarians (Szekel), in line with an order to "destroy all pre-Christian inscriptions". Hungarian runic script was usually written on wood-stone pieces in the bustrofedon style. In this method, the writing was written consecutively from right to left and from left to right. This article is available in Bosnian, Carpathian and Glozel editions. Whenever possible, I will present the fonts in these versions.

Notre Dame is a part of the 1990 program Type before Gutenberg, which included the work of twelve contemporary font designers and represented styles from across the ages. Notre Dame was designed by Karlgeorg Hoefer, who was inspired by the structure of forms once used mainly for liturgical purposes. Kubrick is an experiment in extremes. The Light font is very tall and slender, the Black font is very massive, and Kubrick's slender counters push some of its glyphs to the edge of recognition. The thin counters and negative spaces also give text set in Kubrick a definite visual sparkle, especially in all-uppercase settings. Because of its extreme letterforms, Kubrick is recommended only for large display use. The default letterspacing is set fairly wide to keep text legible. Kubrick was a double-experiment. One part of it was to see how heavy and massive a typeface I could make while still keeping it legible. The other part was to develop a Multiple Master font. Multiple Master fonts were a format developed by Adobe that allowed the user to change things like the weight and width of a typeface. Monollith started as just such a Multiple Master typeface, but when Adobe discontinued the Multiple Master format, I stopped work on the typeface. Later I decided to continue work on it, but as five separate font weights: Light, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold and Black. Very rectilinear letterforms with extremely narrow counters and negative spaces. The five fonts go from very thin and condensed to very heavy and extended. Use in large display settings where unornamented high visual impact is desired.

The rasterized square (clear, therefore 4 as part of the font name) was the constructive basis. The intention was to put all characters within this grid and produce a highly structured, yet lively, resting in itself, display font. Relaxed but exciting, just. An absolutely noteworthy detail are the classical construction principles (based on a typography book from the 50's for poster designers), the so-called optical weighting, derived and slightly exaggerated character elements: The characters are not purely symmetrical and the curve shapes do not close justified with the surrounding square. Loops and tongues slightly hang over; the upper bows are slightly less protruding than lower ones, etc. The kerning is tuned to fit these design details: the white space between the characters match the same filling space.
