I first wanted to call this family Crowbone, after Olaf Tryggvason, the legendary Viking king from Norway. Somehow I changed my mind and went for Crowfeather, because this is not a Viking font and the name ‘felt’ better. Crowfeather is a family of two distinct fonts: a classic Serif and an old school script font. They work really well together!

Overland Trail JNL is Jeff Levine Fonts’ interpretation of “Italian”, first introduced in 1821 by the Caslon & Catherwood Type Foundry. Unique and somewhat similar to Faux Pas JNL with its eccentric stroke weights (opposite what is considered normal for serif fonts), the typeface features a design most associated with the Old West. Overland Trail JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

An old rubber stamp printing set called the Aristocrat Sign Marker was the inspiration for this font from Jeff Levine. Numis was born out of a coin collecting hobby. A quick survey of coins from the late medieval to modern periods to today led to this unicase design. The rounded corners and smoothed edges are meant to evoke a the slightly worn letterfaces found on old coins; a process that tends to bolden the text before being rubbed away completely.

Eckhardt Showcard JNL and Eckhardt Showcard Two JNL are drawn from more lettering found in an old sign painting book. Jeff Levine has continued naming a series of fonts for the late Albert Eckhardt, Jr. (1929-2005) who had owned Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing. Al was a talented lettering artist and a good friend to Jeff.

Finally it’s done! The DearJoe 3 ‘Ultimate handwriting’ font, composed of scanned handwriting which makes it look quite convincingly real. It contains over 500 characters, 200 of them ligatures. Noted British type designer David Quay designed Blackmoor in 1983. It began as a series of photographs of the rusty metal brand names on old tractors in a museum. When I scanned the photos and began to trace the letters, I found the rust and deterioration created a level of detail which gave my letters a psychotic anger which, as an art director in an advertising agency, I closely identified with.

Chelsnuts was inspired by old Art Deco typefaces used in poster art back in the 1920s. Yet, in addition it has a playful side that makes it unique to the sharp letterforms typically seen in similar ultra-thick typefaces. Also included are lowercase letters, not typically seen in fonts such as this, and a customized outlined version of the font.

Ornata C is the third of a series of old ornaments that I am trying to save from oblivion. I love geometric sans serifs, their crispness and rationality. Le Havre taps into this style, but for a while, I've wanted to create a font recalling the printed Futura of the 1940s, which seems to have an elusive quality all its own. After seeing an old manual on a World War II ship, I developed a plan for "Le Havre Metal" but chose to shelve the project due to Le Havre's small x-height. That's where Steagal comes in. When Robbie de Villiers and I began the Chatype project in early 2012 (a project which led one publication to label me the Edward Johnston of Chattanooga!), we started closely studying the vernacular lettering of Chattanooga. During that time, I also visited Switzerland, where I saw how designers were using a new, handmade aesthetic with a geometric base. I was motivated to make a new face combining some of these same influences. The primary inspiration for the new design came from the hand-lettering of sign painters in the United States, circa 1930s through 1950s. My Chatype research turned up a poster from the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which exhibited a number of quirks from the unique hand and style of one of these sign artists. Completing the first draft of Steagal, however, I found that the face appeared somewhat European in character. I turned then to the work of Morris Fuller Benton for a distinctly American take and discovered a number of features that would help define Steagal as a "1930s American" vernacular typeface--features I later learned also inspired Morris Fuller Benton's Eagle. The overall development of Steagal was surprisingly difficult, knowing when to deliberately distort optical artifacts and when to keep them in place. Part of type design is correcting optical illusions, and I found myself absentmindedly adjusting the optical effects. In the end, though, I was able to draw inspiration from period signs, inscriptions, period posters, and architecture while retaining just enough of the naive sensibility. Steagal has softened edges, which simulate brush strokes and retain the feeling of the human hand. The standard version has unique quirks that are not too intrusive. Overshoots have almost been eliminated, and joins have minimal corrections. The rounded forms are mathematically perfect, geometric figures without optical corrections. As a variation to the standard, the “Rough” version stands as the "bad signpainter" version with plenty of character. Steagal Regular comes in five weights and is packed with OpenType features. Steagal includes three Art Deco Alternate sets, optically compensated rounded forms, a monospaced variant, and numerous other features. In all, there are over 200 alternate characters. ITC Musclehead is the work of type designer Timothy Donaldson, a robust, densely packed handwriting typeface. It almost looks like brushwork but was in fact made with a ruling pen which Donaldson had bought from a company in Salem, Massachusetts. He says, The world's gone ruling-pen mad at the moment [late 1990s] and I was beginning to tire of all the skinny splashiness of the letters that most people were making with them. I wanted to do something heavy and robust with the tool, so that's what I did.""

No: Jethro Bodine didn't design this typeface although, to look at it, you might be tempted to think so. Rather, the pattern was a product of the fertile imagination of famed lettering artist Alf Becker. The lowercase letters are the same as the uppercase, but angled differently so, if you want a randomized appearance, you can activate Contextual Alternates and the font will do the shift-key double-clutching needed. Both versions include the complete Unicode Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, with localization for Moldovan and Romanian.
