A 1967 ad for Aurora “Monster Scenes Custom Builder Kits” featured the drippy, gooey hand lettering long associated with science fiction and horror movies. The letters in the ad were auto-scanned and additional characters were completed with the end result being a horror-themed font with sharper angles and lines instead of drips. The techno sound of the 1990s, a personal computer, font creation software, and some inspiration all came together to inspire the F2F (Face2Face) font series. Alessio Leonardi and his friends had the demand to create new unusual typefaces, which would be used in the leading German techno magazine of the day, Frontpage. Even typeset as small as 6-points, in nearly undecipherable layouts, it was a pleasure for the kids to read and try to decrypt the messages. F2F Poison Flowers is a psychedelic trip back in time to the era of peace and love. Who would have ever thought that grunge or techno could be so groovy?

I traveled a lot: in the beginning on my own, later as a tour guide. I always used the English word ‘abroad’ to describe a trip to a foreign country, but I noticed that the English, Australians and New Zealanders preferred the word ‘overseas’. I then realised that they all lived on an island, so most of the foreign countries for them were across the sea. I had to think of that when I made this font! Overseas is a brush font with a certain rough elegance to it. I made it using poster paint and a brush. Use if for posters, product packaging and book covers.

An old ad for Cointreau Triple Sec Liquor featured a bolder variant of the lettering style found in a set of vintage tin stencils that were the model for French Stencil JNL. This is now available as Belle Epoque Stencil JNL, in both regular and oblique versions. “Belle Epoque” means “beautiful era” in French.

If you are like me, you love to doodle in a sketchbook when traveling abroad to capture the indescribable moments that a camera or video would miss. Years ago, on a trip to Spain, I penned out this fanciful handwritten script and just fell in love with it. I came across that old sketchbook recently, and the love affair was renewed. Gonte brings back all of the magic and charm of that trip, and I hope that it will bring a little magic to whatever flights of fancy you might use it for. I am working on my Halloween font collection and realised I did not have a ‘blood drip font’. So, I bought a second hand typewriter and typed all the glyphs. Then I made the blood drips using syrup, paper and gravity! The result is a halloween font with a twist!

We have tried to keep their innocence and rough style. It has been conceived as an homage to the “Pilgrim fathers” landing in Plymouth Bay in 1620 and celebrating the first Thanksgiving with Native Indians in autumn, 1621. The font, consisting of two English capital alphabets (so, without any accented characters): Initials and caps, and a lot of separate figures added, is especially improved by strong enlargments, 72 pts and more, and has very good results when printed.

MB NEGATIVESPACE was inspired on a trip to Birmingham with my wife, seeing a billboard with the main text and parts of it missing. The idea is to use it sparingly; use a good amount of tracking to fill in the blanks and it works even better. Great for headlines, displays logotypes and short texts.

Rebnick is a sans serif typeface where in the early design process, the adjacent stems and bars weren’t weld seamlessly and perfectly. You can actually find glitches which were carefully transformed into a custom language in it’s own and later became the coherent generic rule that keeps everything together. In display sizes, the ink traps give the font’s own character, while in small text sizes they create a good legibility and a well-balanced ratio between the black and white spaces.

Trapper is so named because it exploits a typographic design mechanism known as ink traps purely for graphic effect. Ink traps are a device used by type designers to create significantly higher legibility under adverse printing conditions, especially when the intended use of the type is to be printed at small sizes on mediocre substrate. For Trapper the ink trap is overused for exaggerated visual effect. This gives the Round version a playful twisted balloons look while the Sharp has a stern mechanical default effect. Trapper is a versatile font family of 8 fonts -- Sharp and Round variations in regular and bold weights each with an accompanying oblique.

Small caps art deco font inspired by the golden age of Hollywood and childhood trips to the Majestic Cinema. Two styles, each with three weights. Picture House One is sharp and crisp, Picture House Two has a slightly 'Out of Focus' look to it. Both come with extended language support and oldstyle numbers, giving a lot of scope for may uses.

ITC Kokoa is the work of German graphic designer Jochen Schuss. Schuss found the seeds of inspiration on a trip to Ghana and expanded and experimented with the idea on the computer. It includes an array of symbols and borders to complement its stylized letters. ITC Kokoa retains a touch of its African roots but is overall a modern, funky font.

The 1928 logotype for Sertal Toiletries consisted of a stylized woman's head, a very snaky S, and five fine, fat deco caps spelling out the rest of the brand name. From these five clues, designer Nick Curtis divined the rules" of the typeface and drew a complete alphabet, including a lower case. The result: ITC Scram Gravy. The finished product could be described as Bodoni on steroids. Tight curls in characters like the 'm,' 'r' and 'y' soften the lower case and give the design a light-hearted flavor. ITC Scram Gravy takes its name from one of many running gags in the screwball comic strip "Smokey Stover," which had folks alternately splitting their sides and scratching their heads from 1935 to 1973. Those familiar with Bill Holman's strip will recall Smokey's car, the Foomobile, and one of his famous nonsense declarations: "No foo-ling, that scram gravy ain't wavy.""

Just look at my ink traps Ink traps are normally the preserve of fonts intended for printing at small sizes, in newspapers or directories – extra notches necessary to prevent ink from pooling. FS Rufus turns the ink trap into a beautiful eccentricity, flaunting it in both its lowercase and capitals. Take a look at the “h”, “a” and “k”, and the “B” and “N”. Attention-seeking? Moi?

I had a chat recently with a customer who is a big fan of lettering from the psychedelic poster era. The discussion got me thinking about poster lettering we hadn't yet made into fonts, and a particular sample from a Jimi Hendrix poster I had played around with but never finished making into a font. So I went back to the drawing board and the result is the new Hendrix font. Unlike many of our other Psychedelic fonts which are stripped down to their basic character forms, this font includes the outlines characteristic of a lot of poster lettering from that period. It also includes variant versions of a number of the characters

We just had the Eurovision Song Contest here in Holland. I quite like to watch it, as it is usually a freak show of kitsch, political incorrectness and often really bad music. But it is a laugh and this year was no different. It inspired me to create this particular font with this particular name. Sing Along is a happy, wobbly, kitschy font that comes with a bit of ‘over-the-topness’, a few personality issues and an unsteady gait. Needless to say, it is politically incorrect, but that, my friends, is not necessarily a bad thing.
