For much of the world, the last half of December encompasses the beginning of winter and the a season of gift-giving, marked by Hanukkah and Christmas. It is generally accepted that the tradition of giving of gifts at this time was begun by The Three Wisemen. As described in The Gospel According to Matthew, the wisemen, led by a star from a distant land to the east, found the baby Jesus. First, they worshipped him and then, "they presented him with gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh." (Matthew 2:11). Thus began the tradition of celebrating the birth of Christ with the giving of gifts. There is a parallel tradition in the Jewish faith of the giving of gelt or gold at Hanakkuh to help support poor students, in keeping with the rich history of scholarship that is fundamental to the rabbinic system. Inevitably, in our secular culture, there has been a blending and a secularization of these traditions. The reasons have gotton lost in the “gimme.” What is often overlooked is what Paul realized when he told Timothy, “Neglect not the gift that is in thee.” The most importent gift is the gift inside of us, the gift of sacrificial love for others. When we let that gift be diminished in our minds amid the clutter of modern day material seeking, we can recall the prophesy of Micah over 2800 years ago, But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel: whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." (Micah 5:2 KJV) Never underestimate the impact you have on others. Words of kindness can change people’s lives. The Talmud says that the highest form of wisdom is kindness. Kathleen Serif is a geometric serif display font and works best in text and display applications, such as posters, headline, magazine, logos, titles, product branding, corporate branding and publishing. Kathleen Serif font has three weights: Light, Regular, and Bold, each available in italic, making a total of six styles. The lively calligraphy font Bendigo was created by Phill Grimshaw in 1993 and looks as though it were written by an energetic hand. Generous capitals fit harmoniously with more reserved lower case letters and the right slant of both emphasizes the dynamic feeling of the font. Bendigo should be used in point sizes of 14 or larger and its strong character makes it particularly good for headlines.

Scrawny Cat is a bit of an unusual font: it was made with a brush and some China ink and has no real baseline. It is messy yet legible and in a strange way beautiful. The font is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be freely interchanged. Comes with a litter of diacritics and some cool end-ligatures to boot.

Mayak is a geometric sans serif inspired by the Soviet constructivist fonts of the 1920s-1930s. It contains traditional upper and lower case characters as well as small caps and a great number of stylistic alternates. The font comes in 12 styles: 4 weights in 3 widths. Mayak was designed by Yana Nosenko with contributions from Dmitry Kirsanov and released by ParaType in 2017.

The 1908 art exhibition in Vienna (Kunstschau 1908) featured works by Josef Hoffmann, Cark Otto Czeschka and Gustav Klimt, who showcased his famous painting 'The Kiss'. Kunstschau font was modeled on a stamp, designed by Austrian artist Bertold Löffler, for the 1908 exhibition. Kunstschau is a loose, handwritten font which comes with a distinct all caps upper and lower case, plus an extensive language support.

This font is influenced by Walbaum. However, I did not just trace the design, but sort of had the image in my head while I drew the letters. This font is balanced by not being entirely Walbaum, but still basically is. I've named it "NoraPen." Nora comes from the name of the main character in Ibsen's "A Doll's House," and Pen means a cage for livestock.

What are your super powers? Space Toaster was created by Chank Diesel in 1995 as a custom font for the Cartoon Network's "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" web site. This font represents the printed voice of talk show host Space Ghost, the greatest super hero ever. Since it’s original release in 1995 Space Toaster's character set has been bulked up and the kerning has been vastly improved.

Unger Script is a script design which is obviously based on H. Matheis' Slogan typeface designed for Ludwig & Mayer in 1957. This very expressive script design is defined by its widely swinging upper case and its quite narrowly designed lower case characters. Ralph M. Unger redrew and digitized this font exclusively for profonts in 2001. His work is based on artwork taken from old font catalogues.

Roundhand was created by Matthew Carter in 1966 on the basis of handwriting by Charles Snell, an English calligrapher of XVII-XVIII known in particular by his "The Pen-man's Treasury Open'd" written in 1694. The typeface has continuous cursive shapes with oval aspect, high contrast emphasized by abrupt transitions from thin to thick and regularity of slope. Its capitals are often used as initials in combinations with other typefaces. The current digital version of the typeface has 3 styles of different weights. Roundhand is clear and easy to read and is well-suited for medium size texts and headlines. It will work well in invitations, menus, packaging, and advertising accentuating elegance and the subtle nature of the content. Jan Koller designed the Banner typeface family especially for the creation of animated web banners. Banner is best used at 80p without antialiasing. The family comes in 24 styles which, in combination, create great, unusual screen effects. Three different animation modells provide the basis: extrusion, cutting in/out by ‘pixelation’, outline pixel rotation. While watching the 1947 holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street”, one scene in particular presented a chance to develop a retro type design. ‘Kris Kringle’ suggests to a mother visiting with her child in the Macy’s toy department to try Gimbel’s for a toy she couldn’t find at the store. The news of this behavior reaches Mr. Macy himself, who embraces the practice as a brilliant marketing strategy. A number of departments are then presented with reference books containing competitor ads, and the visual of the cover stating “R.H. Macy & Co. Shopping Guide for the Convenience of Our Customers” shows on screen. The thin, Art Deco sans serif monoline with a few serif-like hooks added onto some characters became the basis for Shopping Guide JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This is a perfect font for historical or fantasy titles. It is influenced by ancient Nordic runes. the strokes flare slightly, to a concave terminal for a finely carved appearance. There are two sets of capitals in PR-Vanaheim-DC (Dual Capitals); one set of narrow letters, more closely related to Runic forms, and one set which includes wider and circular letters, which can be freely combined with the narrow letters for the variety associated with hand lettering. There is one version with dots placed in the centre of large counters and one version without the dots. The broad caps character set includes characters which allow for tight spacing; a dropped L, and a tall T. There are also two different lowercase sets, one modern, and one archaic, all of which can be freely mixed to fine tune the appearance of your text. The 1927 Klingspor Foundry specimen book debuted one of Rudolf Koch's greatest achievements, the original Wilhelm-Klingspor-Schrift, the source for the patinaed Wilhelmschrift. Companion Wilhelmschrift Ornaments features 36 flowers and other decorative elements also designed by Koch.

Monthly Calendar JNL is a companion font to Calendar Blocks JNL, and features classic wood type lettering and numerals from the 1800s. A set of large numbers are on their own keys, while the numbers 1-31 reside on the A-Z and a-e keys respectively. The days of the week are on the lower case “f” through “l” keys, while the names of the months are found on the “m” through “x” positions. An open rectangle is on the lower case “y” key, and a solid black rectangle is on the “z”. For those who wish to use the 23/30 and 24/31 configurations, they can be found on the left and right parenthesis.

The mystic sadness of the sight Of a far town seen in the night. Like the poetry movement of the early 20th century, from which the font takes its name, Imagist relies on the power of concrete images and brings an organic vibration to the words it forms. Imagist is a lively and decorative serif typeface with prominent features that appear especially in the letters K, R, M, N, W, V, k, w, v and y. Powerful ball terminals also bring recognizable attraction. Imagist contains six weights and corresponding Italics. Italics have a cursive-style letter s for as Stylistic Alternate. Before Bodoni, there was Didot. With the publication by Francois Ambroise Didot of Paris in 1784 of his prospectus for Tasso’s La Gerusalemme Liberata, the rococo typographical style of Fournier de Jeune was replaced with a spartan, neo-classical style that John Baskerville pioneered. The typeface Didot used for this work was of Didot’s own creation and is considered by both G. Dowding and P. Meggs to be the first modern face. Three years later, Bodoni of Parma is using a very similar face. Just as Bodoni’s typeface evolved over time, so did that of the Didot family. The eldest son of Francois Ambroise Didot, Pierre, ran the printing office; and Firmin ran the typefoundry. Pierre used the flattened, wove paper, again pioneered by Baskerville, to permit a more accurate impression and allow the use of more delicate letterforms. Firmin took full advantage of the improved paper by further refining the typeface introduced by his father. The printing of Racine’s Oeuvres in 1801 (seen in our gallery image #2) shows the symbiotic results of their efforts, especially in the marked increase in the sharpness of the serifs when compared to their owns works of only six years earlier. It has been suggested that one reason Bodoni achieved greater popularity than Didot is the thinner hairlines of Didot were more fragile when cast in metal type and thus more expensive for printers to use than Bodoni. This ceased to be a problem with the advent of phototypesetting, opening the door for a renewed interest in the work of the Didot family and especially that of Firmin Didot. Although further refinements in the Didot typeface were to come (notably the lower case ‘g’ shown in 1819), we have chosen 1801 as the nominal basis for our presentation of HiH Firmin Didot. We like the thick-thin circumflex that replaced the evenly-stroked version of 1795, possible only with the flatter wove paper. We like the unusual coat-hanger cedilla. We like the organic, leaf-like tail of the ‘Q.’ We like the strange, little number ‘2’ and the wonderfully assertive ‘4.’ And we like the distinctive and delightful awkwardness of the double-v (w). Please note that we have provided alternative versions of the upper and lower case w that are slightly more conventional than the original designs. Personally, I find the moderns (often called Didones) hard on the eyes in extended blocks of text. That does not stop me from enjoying their cold, crisp clarity. They represent the Age of Reason and the power of man’s intellect, while reflecting also its limitations. In the title pages set by Bodoni, Bulmer and Didot, I see the spare beauty of a winter landscape. That appeals to a New Englander like myself. Another aspect that appeals to me is setting a page in HiH Firmin Didot and watching people try to figure out what typeface it is. It looks a lot like Bodoni, but it isn't!

Highbrow Cafetorium JNL is a very "minimalist" font in the sense that there's only the basic lower case characters and essential punctuation. The lettering is based on a neon-and-bulb wall sign for a long-closed cafeteria on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Florida. The 'b', 'd', 'k' and 'l' have unusually high verticals.

Madisonian has been found in a catalogue of the New York Bruce type-foundry, dated 1859. The lower cases have the feeling of a Bodoni Italic and the initials have a "spencerian" touch. This font did exist originaly in a single weight. The family has been extended with a bold and an engraved version.
