The 1930 Geneva Motor Show (Salon International De l'Automobile Et Du Cycle) showcased a lot of new cars, but one item in particular took my interest: the amazing art deco poster announcing the show. Lokomotiv font was based on this poster. It is a very deco-ish font, futuristic, angular, with bold squares, rounds and triangles. As I had to work with just a handful of glyphs, and needed to fill an entire font, I made up the missing ones myself. Lokomotiv, by the way, is German for Locomotive.

I have no idea why I called this font Bearskin: maybe I was influenced by one of the Viking novels I am reading - they’re full of Berserkers - but that name was already taken. Anyhoo, Bearskin font is a nice handmade all caps font. A little rough here and there, but with a lot of character as well. Bearskin comes with swashes, so you can have a ball!

This typeface family is developed with the designer in mind. WBP Nel is a narrow sans serif with lots of options. The Regular consists of UPPERCASE and lowercase glyphs, beautiful kerning and a nice ampersand. All other styles are just uppercase and made to give your designs some extra flair. The Brickbuild is a playful, stencil version and the Dots (freebie) is a dotted typeface. The Light and Heavy version complement the Regular beautifully. Alias Vertical is a sans serif typeface with a vertical cut-off point for letter endings. The vertical cut-offs bend round characters (b, c, o, etc) into a squarish, high-shouldered shape, suggesting Roger Excoffon’s Antique Olive. In mid-weights, the typeface mixes Antique Olive with typefaces such as Gill or Johnston, for example the shape of the t, the l borrowing Johnston’s flick. Vertical has the same minimal difference in weight between verticals and horizontals as Gill and Johnston, and the same sharp connection point where curves meet straight lines. Like Antique Olive, Vertical has a narrow connection point here, adding contrast and definition. The overall effect feels austere at lighter weights and strident and graphic at bolder weights, and sharp and incised throughout. In the Bold and Black weights, the squarish and top heavy shape of Antique Olive is most noticeable. For example the wide uppercase, with the B having almost-even width between top and bottom curves, and the almost-overhang of the top curve of the G. But Vertical does not have as extreme an aesthetic or square shape as Antique Olive. As well as its wide design, the upper case is given extra authority by being a slightly heavier weight than the lower case. This is a device borrowed from Gill, and other ‘old’ typefaces, where the upper case is presented as a titling design. Modern sensibilities are more focussed on an even colour between upper and lower case. Vertical was originally intended as a sister typeface to Ano, like AnoAngular or AnoStencil. Vertical developed into a similar but separate design. Ano was designed for use in Another Man — in its modular, circle-base design, and the way there aren’t the amendments usually made in bolder weights to ensure letter clarity. This is for layouts where different weights are used together in different sizes so that the overall letter weight is the same, a feature of the magazine. Where Ano is simple and graphic, Vertical has nuance and texture. It is a pragmatic, utility design. In the balance between graphic and typographic, its focus is the latter.

Glass Light was designed in 1912 by Franz Paul Glass for the Genzsch & Heyse foundry. The font is stylewise related to the "Lo types" of the same period. Glass designed a lot of decorative elements to go along with the font. I added Swashes, endletters and smallcaps to the set to make it complete. Since this type of font will probably not be used by many professionals, I did not put all the letters into one big OTF-version since most people don't have OTF-savy software. As the basis for this new font artist and designer Lena Schmidt used an old font design by her mother Jutta. At a young age, her mother drew and illustrated a lot with pen and ink. She made beautiful illustrations and many font designs. Schmidt chose one of these drafts - delicately drawn Donovan lyrics - as the basis for this digital handwritten stencil font. What emerged from it is a stencil text and display typeface that relates to Auriol's art nouveau typefaces and the era of impressionism. More weights will be published in soon. This font was originally meant to be my last creation of 2022, but as it turned out, it was the first font of 2023 instead! Why? Well, because it took me a lot of time to complete the 150 different swahes letter combinations, the 182 different letters (not counting numbers, accented characters etc) the small caps, the subscript and the multilingual support! Anyway, it was worth the work - the Frequent font works great as a display font, or whatever you have in mind. Play around with the different versions (Regular, Solid and Inside) for great results.

One of the earliest fonts published by Canada Type was Tiger Script, Phil Rutter's digitization of Jaguar, Georg Trump's 1967 wild calligraphic brush face. In 2010, when the font was revisited for an update, it was shown that it too light for applications under 24 pt, and too irregular for applications over 64 pt. So the face was redigitized from scratch. This new digitization brings a more seamless contour and a much steadier stroke, and much better outlines for use at both extremes of scaling. Language support was also greatly expanded, and many alternates and ligatures were added to the redigitized character set. The name was also changed to Trump Script, to better reflect the origins of the design. Trump Script is a master calligrapher's hand producing very uncommon jolts and bursts of sharpness. It showcases some of the most suprising letter forms ever drawn, like the very unique treatments of B, K, W, Y and Z. In the lowercase one can see the cattiest g ever made, and some of the wildest shapes in the f, j, p, y and z. Trump Script comes in all popular formats. This pearl by Kevin King was the best faux chinese font I've ever come over, and now it can be used for setting themed text and menus in many more languages! :) Kevin King says: "I have said before you know - I can if I want to (Stamp! Scowl!). Cod Chinese of the worst kind, I wanted a "Chinese" font for a project and couldn't find what I wanted. Here’s an intriguing mixture of 1930s deco and modern tech fashion. Travel Kit Medium is a sturdy semi-serif hybrid with one foot in the past and another in the present. It is slightly low-waisted with extended crossbars on the capital A, E, F, H, K, and P. But the capital B, M, R and X are distinctively contemporary with the E and M repeated as unicase letters in the lowercase. Optional retro characters (notably the unicase e and m) have been provided if you prefer a more traditional overall look - and your software allows access to these characters. Simply find and replace the more modern letters with the older ones. In addition, small caps with even more alternate characters have been included for greater flexibility and convenience. Travel Kit Medium with Alternates is now available in the OpenType format. EraMax 123 is a multi-layered display geometric sans serif, meant to be set BIG, for large, colourful statements. It's the perfect face for packaging, posters & branding, where a strong, colourful voice is needed... Did I mention posters? The "Max" in EraMax comes from the ultra bold weight, but also, and mainly as a tip of the hat to Peter Max, the designer and artist, known for creating so many images which have come to be emblematic of the sixties and seventies. The bold gradient effects in some of his posters were the inspiration behind the dotted and striped layers. This font's vintage flavour truly stand out in a retro setting, but also has a modern flavour that lends it the flexibility to work well in a more contemporary context. This is the second of what is to be an extended family of typefaces based on the original hand painted signage found in the T. H. & B Railway station in Hamilton Ontario, a classic Art Moderne building, designed by the New York architectural firm of Fellheimer and Wagner for the Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo Railway line and completed in 1933.
