When reading text, the most informative parts of the written word for a human brain to identify, are the top and bottom edges of each word, and to a lesser degree, the leading and trailing edges. The overall shape has more useful info than the inner workings of each word. DT Enigmystic, is a display font family that gives you just that. The outer edge. At first glance, these letters don't look like standard letters, and yet, they are perfectly readable. And it is a 'somewhat' smart text, in that it will automatically complete the trailing edge of every word, whenever it sees a comma, period or space. Similarly, it will automatically complete the leading edge of every word following a space. When used as display test or as a heading, the first letter will need to be preceeded by a space, to achieve a full enclosed word outline. As with most of my fonts, do use Contextual Ligatures. This allows the letters to come alive. When generated here on this webpage, contextual ligatures are not turned on, and so the words do not appear completely closed at their beginnings and ends. But as can be seen in the poster images, these outlined words do automatically complete themselves when contextual ligatures are active.

FF Cocon’s designer, Evert Bloemsma (1958—2005) described it as a “serious typeface”. Despite first impressions, the description holds up well. Since its 2001 release, FF Cocon has been used in an astoundingly wide variety of design applications. At large sizes, FF Cocon works as a display face, with beautiful detailing. And at small sizes, it remains surprisingly readable. The lowercase letters a, b, d, g, h, m, n, p, q, r and u, were drawn without spurs, as Bloemsma made an attempt to erase every trace of handwriting; even “normal,” neutral sans serif typefaces still retain elements in their letterforms like this. Bloemsma wanted none of it. Although a difficult starting point for a typeface, this proved successful. Bloemsma’s design is a family of rounded yet rather asymmetrical forms with details reminiscent of brush-strokes, but that were not made with a brush in hand. In spite of its claim to seriousness, FF Cocon is a family of seductive, voluptuous styles. The original FF Cocon had two widths—normal and condensed. Later, a more compact Extra Condensed version was introduced, as well as italics.

I have mirrored the uppercase A and M to give the strokes a correct direction, and shortened/widened a few lowercase letters to give the text a more even color. Here’s an intriguing mixture of 1930s deco and modern tech fashion. Travel Kit Medium is a sturdy semi-serif hybrid with one foot in the past and another in the present. It is slightly low-waisted with extended crossbars on the capital A, E, F, H, K, and P. But the capital B, M, R and X are distinctively contemporary with the E and M repeated as unicase letters in the lowercase. Optional retro characters (notably the unicase e and m) have been provided if you prefer a more traditional overall look - and your software allows access to these characters. Simply find and replace the more modern letters with the older ones. In addition, small caps with even more alternate characters have been included for greater flexibility and convenience. Travel Kit Medium with Alternates is now available in the OpenType format. In addition to small caps, lining figures, oldstyle figures, and petite figures, this expanded OpenType version contains additional stylistic alternates and historical forms. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Boring Sans, designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, is a typeface family designed along two variable axis: weight and weirdness. These two parameters allow designers to explore a full range of variations on sans serif design, starting from a neutral set of proportions and evolving to a strongly contrasted and dynamic treatment, ready to raise eyebrows on social media. The basic "A" subfamily, developed in in five weights plus italics, behaves like a traditional, solid workhorse sans serif, with finely tuned proportions for optimal readability and minimal emotional impact. The "B" subfamily, developed in the same ten weights, shows a more contemporary "brutal" approach, with slanted lines, deep inktraps and stronger contrast.
