Matthew Carter has been refining his design for Alisal for so long, he says, that when he was asked to complete the design for the Monotype Library, it was almost as if he were doing a historical revival of his own typeface. The illusion even extended to changes in his work process: although he now does all his preliminary and final drawing on screen, the first trial renderings of Alisal were done as pencil renderings. Alisal is best classified as an Italian old style design. Originally created between the late 15th and mid-16th centuries in northern Italy, the true Italian old styles were some of the first roman types. They tend to be the most calligraphic of serifed faces, with the axis of their curved strokes inclined to the left, as if drawn with a flat-tipped pen or brush. These designs offer sturdy, free-flowing and heavily bracketed serifs, short descenders, and a modest contrast in stroke weight. Alisal has nearly all the classic Italian old style character traits, plus a few quirks of its own. It is calligraphic in nature, with more of a pen-drawn quality than faces like Palatino or Goudy Old Style. It is more rough-hewn than either Goudy's Kennerley or Benton's Cloister, and is generally heavier in weight than most of the other Italian old style designs. One place where Alisal makes a clean break with traditional old style designs is in the serifs. While sturdy and clearly reflecting pen-drawn strokes, Alisal's serifs have no bracketing and appear to be straight strokes crossing the main vertical. Like Caslon or Trajanus, Alisal is a handsome design when viewed as a block of copy. Ascenders are tall and elegant, and serve as a counterpoint to the robust strength of the rest of the design. Alisal is available as a small family of roman and bold with a complementary italic for the basic roman weight, providing all that is needed for the majority of text typography. Alisal is not as well-known as some of Carter's other typefaces, but this lovely and long-incubated design was certainly worth the wait.

Aphrosine is a font based on pointed pen script. A huge lot of alternatives and smart OpenType features allow it to look almost indistinguishable from real live handwriting. Aphrosine is something between handwriting and calligraphy: it took too much effort for being “just handwriting” but lacks seriousness and regularity comparing to true calligraphic fonts. That’s why it was called after a peculiar character from a children’s book: a witch who was very fond of dressing, makeup and writing letters. Aphrosine has three faces. Beauchef is a sans serif typeface originally created to meet the needs of Centro de Modelamiento Matemático de la Universidad de Chile (University of Chile Center for Mathematical Modeling). Beauchef is a typeface with rough strokes that features subtle optical compensation and does not strictly follow the laws of perception. This typeface might not be too cheerful, but shows a very particular idiosyncrasy of form. Beauchef is as tough as advanced mathematics; however, it is as legible and exact as numbers themselves. This is an avant-garde typeface that resembles the development of mathematics, but at the same time it is as conservative, calm and respectful as clients who require its services. Beauchef is so astonishing as mathematical formulas that mathematicians work with, but at the same time it is as humble as resulting figures.

Modesto Initials had existed as a single font for several years. I recently added a fill font to put color in the Inlines. The Inline font still works by itself. The Fill font works alone too, as an ultra Modesto on steroids. They work best together. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. Naïve Deco Sans is a layered sans serif handwritten font designed by Fanny Coulez and Julien Saurin in Paris. Our goal was to draw a font with finely irregular lines that give a human and whimsical feeling. It is available in two versions: double or triple lines. I really like creating script fonts. Why, I hear you say? Well, creating script fonts lets me be me. I am not trying to create classy, connected fonts for you to write love letters with: there are already too many of those available and quite frankly, I just don't like them. I prefer the messy script fonts - uneven, no real baseline and with a bit of splatter or rough edges for good measure. Daft script is one of these messy script fonts: it was handmade and it comes with two alternates for the lower case glyphs that cycle as you type. This is an all-caps font, so that means you have 4 options per letter! I also love languages (I speak 6), so Daft Script comes with fantastic language support, including Vietnamese and Sami.
