These four typefaces, Berlinette NB, Lyonette NB, Marseillette NB and Parisette NB, were designed from the same basic shape, a geometric form that avoids strict horizontals and uses more offbeat triangular shapes. Lyonette is a fanciful type, gentle and precocious. It seems aloof at times but isn�t really. The frivolity and quirkiness of the narrow width is offset by the fey, finger-like horizontals, vaguely reminiscent of strange encounters and dark closets. It�s great for fashion advertising with literary pretensions. Or maybe a kinder, gentler sci-fi movie.

Leksa is an oldstyle, even a bit old-fashioned text family in 12 faces, including six upright and six italic ones, from Light to Black, with both oldstyle and tabular digits and true small caps. The typeface works best in the books of classical style, and looks good in both small and large point sizes. One of the main features of the typeface is its professionally-designed Cyrillic which (together with sans-serif companion Leksa Sans) was awarded for excellence in type design at Modern Cyrillic competition in Superfamilies category.

Freak was originally released by The Great Western Type Foundry in 1889. According to Maurice Annenberg, Great Western became Barnhart Brothers & Spindler when the Barnhart brothers bought out the Toepfer family in 1868.The plant superintendent, Charles Spindler, became Secretary of the new firm. Specimen books as late as 1899 show the name Great Western alongside the BB&S name. At some point, prior to 1925, Freak was renamed “Bamboo” by BB&S. It was delisted when BB&S was absorbed by ATF in 1929. Listed in McGrew under “Bamboo”.

Nerone is a quasi-unicase display type family in four weights, from light to black. In its lighter versions, it's reminiscent of dignified flared serifs like Albertus. Inspired by ancient Roman capitals, Nerone takes a whimsical look at how they might turn into a black fatface, and how a matching lowercase might give the whole affair a whimsical feel — specifically when applied to fun branding and marketing uses. PT Petroglyph™ was designed by Ekaterina Kulagina and licensed by ParaType in 2002. The type was created on the basis of petroglyphs (rock-carvings) that are known in 77 countries. They remained in a form of geometrical drawings in the caves of North Spain and France. Scientists claim that the radial spread-out of circles or center-pointed circles that are usually depicted show the development of solar symbolism at that period of time. We know for sure that such mysterious signs as drawings carved on rocks already existed 40 centuries ago.

Leksa Sans is a humanist sans-serif face with some contrast. The family consists of 14 faces (upright & true italic in seven weights from Extralight to Black). Designed as a sans-serif companion for Leksa, Leksa Sans works perfectly either with it or alone. It is suitable both for text setting and for short inscriptions. One of the main features of the typeface is its professionally-designed Cyrillic which (together with serif companion Leksa) was awarded for excellence in type design at Modern Cyrillic competition in Superfamilies category.

Pompeijana is a part of the 1990 collection Type before Gutenberg 2’, which includes twelve contemporary typefaces each representative of a particular era. Pompeijana is Adrian Frutiger’s contribution to the project Type before Gutenberg’. He based the forms of this capital typeface on the writing of the Romans in Pompei. The decorative look of the alphabet is achieved by purely graphic means, placing the emphasis of the top and foot of the letters with heavy horizontals and diamond-shaped serifs. Frutiger completed his typeface with the weight Borders, a font consisting of numerous ornaments true to the style of the alphabet. The ornaments can be combined to form different borders and offer an optimal addition to the elegant Pompeijana. Pompeijana is best combined with modern sans serif typefaces.

A photo from Gene Gable (a regular contributor of ideas to Jeff Levine Fonts) shows the vintage signage for the Lasher Hatchery in a slightly different take on the classic Art Deco solid letter style. Since good ideas, like eggs can be hatched, thus the font's name of Hatchery JNL.

Josephine, named for Josephine Baker, the legendary dancer of the 1930s, is a twenty first century sans serif typeface that harks back to the earlier part of last century. Although very modern, it has been greatly influenced by the many art deco fonts produced during the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century.In it I have tried to capture the art deco spirit in a modern humanist font. Josephine is exceptionally readable and yet completely characteristic of the Art Deco period. It can be used for text passages as well as display in posters, advertising, labels and packaging. It is professionally finished and contains all upper and lower case characters as well as all special characters, punctuation and symbols.

France 1727, the book Le chemin Royal de la Croix is published. Centuries later the historical publication comes into the hands of Josep Patau, who uses its printed pages as a reference for a new digital typeface. Previously created for printing, those shapes adapt now to the screen and show the sophistication and authenticity of true Garalde types. Frenchute is a multipurpose typeface with 3 optical sizes. All the shapes were modified to cover different typographic needs. The diagonal axis and the moderate stroke contrast are taken further in the italics letterforms, where the design is far more expressive. The character set includes decorative forms and italic capitals with swashes, so the text looks prettier.

Ministry Script was designed to be “A time capsule that marks both the American ad art of the 1920s, and the current new-millennium acrobatics of digital type.” First letters of Ministry comes from a how-to lettering book but immediately turned on a complex and modern new digital typeface design with thousand glyphs. The source of inspiration for Carson Monogram is a letter set from the book, Art Monogram and Lettering by J.M. Bergling, Vol. 1, Fifth Edition published in 1912. Created for captions and similar serif situations where small type is required, Freight Micro is amazingly illustrative for large type too. This half-wedge, half-slab design provides the firmest of foundations to build your design on. The abruptness of the sharply carved italics take emphasis to a higher form. Freight Micro is an exercise in whispering very loudly.

Wood Sans Narrow JNL is based on examples of an extra condensed Hamilton Wood Type. The design was cleaned up a bit to provide more uniform stroke widths, but still retains the nostalgic feel of a tall, narrow type face found on broadsides and posters of the late 1800s. It is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Linotype Reducta is a part of the Take Type Library, selected from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. It was designed by Austrian artist Herbert O. Modelhart with only a small number of constant form elements. The cool and technical Linotype Reducta is intended exclusively for headlines in large point sizes.

There are many Uncial types in the type catalogues around the world, but most of them have a rough and stiff appearance. The Roman Uncial ND by Ricardo Rousselot stands out for the realism of its strokes, which look as if they are handwritten, bringing freshness and authenticity to its applications. In an 1896 specimen catalog for American Type Founders there is a design called Geometric Gothic. The lettering style looks as if it’s ahead of its time; foreseeing the 1980s. With its squared characters, some pointed overhangs and modified character shapes, this type design is now available as Squared Off JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.
