I have never stayed at a boarding house myself, but I’ve heard some horror stories. When I have finished painting the three fonts (using Chinese ink and a small brush), I didn’t have to think long for a name. Boarding House family consists of three distinct hand painted fonts - the complement each other, but can be used separately as well. Jostern is the first font designed by EMME Grafica. It's a simple bold, all caps, grunge, eye-catcher font, particularly suitable for titling, branding and typographic amusements. The dearJoe series of fonts had it’s origin somewhere around 1999, the year I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt at converting my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own handwriting had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use. And that’s what they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on just about anything, ranging from Vietnamese riksjas, a Tasmanian gym to a fancy chocolate store on 5th Avenue. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what later became the JOEBOB graphics font foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in making something that can almost pass for actual handwriting.

Nekst is geometric sans-serif. So it can only seem at first glance. Non-standard forms of some letters, behave unexpectedly and eccentric in a text line. Soft Rock is a bold condensed sans serif with rounded contours that contrives to be gentle and dynamic at the same time: rather like the soft rock bands (Chicago, Air Supply, Fleetwood Mac etc) after which it is named. At first glance Parking Lot Stencil JNL look quite similar to many sans stencil fonts, but rest assured there are numerous subtle nuances that give the typeface its own unique flavor. What excactly is a snacky plop? To be honest, I don't know!!! The name comes out of a wordplay! :) But what I know is that this font is playful, unpredictable and fun to look at and use! I have added 5 different versions of each letter, and they automatically changes as you type!

This engaging headline face is based on a rather pudgy typeface named "Bullion Shadow", which was originally released somewhere on the cusp between the hippie and disco eras, and was equally at home in both. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets.

Adagio is a spontaneous, casual kind of font but don’t be fooled into thinking just because it’s all uneven and painted that it’s a pushover. There’s a bold brush pen at the heart of the design as well as a full set of alternate lowercase characters if you’re looking for something extra.

Opinion varies regarding the role of Claude Garamond (ca. 1480–1561) in the development of the Old Face font Garamond. What is accepted is the influence this font had on other typeface developments from the time of its creation to the present. Garamond, or Garamont, is related to the alphabet of Claude Garamond (1480–1561) as well as to the work of Jean Jannon (1580–1635 or 1658), much of which was attributed to Garamond. In comparison to the earlier Italian font forms, Garamond has finer serif and a generally more elegant image. The Garamond of Jean Jannon was introduced at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 as Original Garamond, whereafter many font foundries began to cast similar types. The famous Stempel Garamond interpretation of the 1920s remains true to the original Garamond font with its typical Old Face characteristics. The bold italic was a modern addition at the end of the 1920s and the small caps provided an alternative to the standard capital letters. In the mid 1980s, a light version was added to Stempel Garamond. Since its appearance, Stempel Garamond has been one of the most frequently used text fonts.

Tsotsi, a recent addition to the Scholtz Fonts range, is highly legible, strong, African and contemporary in design. It is a sans serif font, however, the gently splayed terminals to the strokes subtly hint at a serif. It has been designed to be easy on the eye and readable at all font sizes and can be used either as a body (text) font or in headings and larger scale design. The font has an irreverent insouciance which is suggested by the verticals which all vary from true perpendicular by a few degrees, and by the slightly top-heavy nature of all characters - hence the name "Tsotsi" -- a rascal who is very sure of himself (and a little big-headed). Above all, however, the Tsotsi (both the font and the person) has an appealingly cheeky and mischievous style. It includes characters for English, French, Italian, German, and Portugese. all upper and lower case letters, all special characters as well as all numerals and punctuation. The numerals are mono-spaced so that they will line up correctly in columns of figures. The letters of the alphabet are correctly kerned so that they appear correctly in text.

Merge is a soft family of sans, available in 4 weights. Readable at small sizes, it sets open and wide. At display sizes, the softness makes for a friendlier, more casual alternative to other rounded sans.

The hand lettered opening title for the 1935 movie “Thanks a Million” is rendered in a condensed, thick and thin Art Deco sans serif design. It is now available as the digital typeface Stocks and Bonds JNL – in both regular and oblique versions.

Vocalist JNL is a bit of a novelty Art Deco typeface based on hand lettering from some 1940s sheet music. Using the classic "thick and thin" style of the day, a number of letters and numbers have wedges cut out of their designs.

A piece of sheet music for “Broken Blossoms” circa the 1920s or early 1930s has its cover title hand lettered in a wide thick-and-thin Art Deco design. This is now available as Flower Shop JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Thin, elegant and thoroughly Art Deco is the thick-and-thin (slightly flared) alphabet found on page 31 of Samuel Welo’s 1930 instructional book “Lettering Practical and Foreign”. Redrawn digitally as Evening Dress JNL, it is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A 1940s Australian song folio featuring tunes performed by singer-actress Deanna Durbin had her name hand lettered in an interesting Art Deco style sans. This became the basis for Song Folio JNL, capturing all the nuances of the original in digital form.

An Art Deco geometric alphabet found within the pages of the 1939 French lettering book "Modèles de lettres modernes par Georges Léculier" ("Models of Modern Letters by Georges Léculier") is the basis for French Geometric JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

A comic book feature entitled “Foe of the Borgias” appeared in 1937’s New Adventure Comics. The hand lettered title was done in a slab serif Art Deco style and is recreated digitally as Classic Comics JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The free-form Art Nouveau hand lettering on the cover of the 1918 sheet music for “Smilin’ Through” (from the MGM motion picture of the same name starring Norma Shearer) is the model for Upbeat JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

Uptown JNL was found amidst the pages of a 1944 edition of the vintage lettering design book entitled "Sixty Alphabets". This lovely Art Deco typeface has slight curvature to the straight lines of the letter forms and a wonderful hand-lettered look.
