Rebekah Pro is a revival of ATF’s Piranesi family, the regular being designed by Willard Sniffin, and the remaining weights designed by Morris Fuller Benton. Tom Rickner first revived Benton’s Italic for use in his wedding invitations for his marriage to Rebekah Zapf in 2006. He completed the character set in 2009. Rebekah Pro captures the elegance and distinction of the original. Tom carefully studied samples from 1930s American Type Founders catalogues and created a digital version with meticulous care. While considered an informal script because its letterforms do not connect, Rebekah Pro has graceful strokes and a truly elegant appearance. The letters of Bihext fit into the trapezoids formed by bisecting hexagons from the top corner to the bottom corner. Because these trapezoids have two orientations, there are two sets of characters and the typeface was designed assuming that the user would want to alternate these two character sets. The alternating of characters is done automatically with the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt) in applications that support it. The typeface is monospaced with very tightly letter spacing. If the letter spacing seems too tight, consider alternating colors to make the individual letters stand out as an alternative to loosening the letter spacing. Almost certainly the user will need to adjust line spacing if more than one line of text is used. The family includes an outline style that can be used in a layer above the filled style. A decorative, display face, Bihext is too difficult to read to be used for long text.

Lenga is a kind of beech originally from South America. The explorers who discovered this beech in Tierra del Fuego, thought it looked like a tree from their home country and named it 'Lenga'. Like many of southern hemisphere beeches, the Lenga beech is fast growing and hardy, making it an ideal timber tree. It regenerates easily after fires. My eldest son Sam always wanted to visit Japan and he has been saving up for a ticket for years now. We should have traveled there this year, but due to the pandemic, that was impossible. We’re now trying to go next year. Sam and I did make some kind of itinerary and I told him how we were going to get around, as I have been to Japan many times. I told him about the Shinkansen trains, the cute Tram in Nagasaki and the immense subway system in Tokyo. One of the lines in Tokyo is the so-called Yamanote Circle Line, which I have used on numerous occasions. A new font name was born and it stuck to this particular font! Subway Circle is a 100% handmade font. It is rounded, slightly slanted and comes with a sunny disposition. I am sure that, when you use it, you will find your 生きがい… ;-)

Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966), whose career spanned nearly ninety years, holds a unique place in American art and culture. He was enormously accomplished and successful in both fine art and commercial endeavors. Parrish's hand-drawn letters were a significant part of his works, which bridged the familiar with a startling otherworldliness. P22 has created the Parrish font set in cooperation with the National Museum of American Illustration.

The 1930 sheet music for “A Peach of a Pair” from Paramount Pictures’ “Follow Through” listed the stars and production credits in a wonderfully casual, free-form Art Nouveau hand lettering. This has been recreated digitally as Casually Nouveau JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. A long-set aside Art Deco typeface design begun (but not completed) may or not have been from a vintage source, but its roots go well back into Art Deco lettering. Taking the existing letters and thickening their weights, removing the counters and ending up with a completely new, solid alphabet design resulted in Deco Redux JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The 1929 sheet music for Cole Porter's "You Do Something to Me" (from the musical stage comedy "Fifty Million Frenchmen") has the name of the play hand lettered in a bold sans with an intersecting inline. This design was the inspiration for Suggestion Box JNL. Not quite Art Nouveau, and not yet Art Deco, the typeface is nonetheless timeless in its clean, appealing style.

Twentieth Century Poster, designed by Sol Hess for Lanston Monotype in the 1940s, provided the inspiration for this family of faces. Although, historically, the design falls outside the time period normally considered the Art Deco era, its sensibilities are pure Art Moderne. Nick Curtis's love affair with typography began when he was barely past adolescence, in a neighborhood alley of East Dallas. On a routine patrol for tossed treasures, he came across a type specimen catalog: a big, fat green binder displaying hundreds of fonts! He was hooked. Curtis's career has taken him from production art to graphic design to art direction, but type has always remained his graphic passion, especially the provocative designs produced from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. Curtis's inspiration for ITC CuppaJoe comes from Art Deco lettering, but not from the typical sources. Depending upon your age or your interest in early twentieth-century package design ITC CuppaJoe might look familiar. Its foundation is the label art for Bokar, A&P's premium coffee during the 1930s. Astrid Grotesk is a normalized version of Schizotype Grotesk. Normalized; not neutralized. Where many neo-grotesks appear cold with their harsh neutrality, Astrid has a warmth, eminating from its (for want of a better word) clunkiness. With the latest update, it becomes a true workhorse, with a range of widths and italics for the normal widths. Astrid Grotesk, while being clearly a neo-grotesk in appearance, has a personality all of its own. Standout characters include the f and t, and the default binocular g, unusual in neo-grotesks. And the right angled terminals on c, e and s. Stylistic sets offer up alternate forms of a, g, y, I, @, dutch IJ, german eszett and l. A full complement of numerals is included: proportional and tabular, lining and oldstyle, plus fractions, subscript and superscript. Note also that the tabular figures are duplexed across weights - very useful when highlighting specific entries in tables. Brillig is a loose and informal handwriting font. It comes in four flavors, each of which has a very different feel. Brillig Gimble: more formal in that the characters are interconnected as in cursive script. To further enhance this effect, the characters have been created with a slightly "blobby" pen which provides a suggestion of precision. Brillig Earth: is bold and strong. It is more "down-to-earth" than the other styles, however, the boldness is tempered with quite wispy ends (terminuses) to the characters. It conveys a suggestion of speed and strength. Brillig Aire: is the most delicate and ethereal of the styles. Think of fairies, dandelions and dragonflies and you have an idea of what Brillig Aire conveys. Not only are the characters very light in weight, but they terminate in a wispy, delicate end. In spite of all this, Brillig Aire is very readable and can be used in a variety of contexts. Brillig Brave: is quite like Gimble in its feel with one important difference -- the characters are not connected as in cursive script. Each character stands alone. Brillig Line: is a clean, lightweight style using a mono width line for an informal, handwritten feel. There is a collection of the above four styles that is attractively priced and gives you the ability to use these four fonts in a variety of ways within the same document. Village Green JNL is based upon a font called “Giraffe Extended” from the 1892 edition of the MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan type specimen book, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Its Art Nouveau styling can also fit well with 1960s counter-culture revival projects. According to Wikipedia “A village green is a common open area within a village or other settlement. Historically, a village green was common grassland with a pond for watering cattle and other stock, often at the edge of a rural settlement, used for gathering cattle to bring them later on to a common land for grazing. Later, planned greens were built into the centres of villages.”

Minnesota Plaid is the baddest plaid ever! It may not be the choice pattern for golfers' slacks or bagpipers' kilts, but it has a City-like flavor with its own twist, a stylish ruggedness & toughness that could even be described as a sort of formal graffiti, thanks to the art deco swash of many of its strokes. It’s the kind of look that would be perfectly at home with hip hop or rap music, football and other sports, cars and trucks, power tools, and other manly, masculine usages.
