I have upgraded my existing font software and also bought new font software to play around with. It takes some time getting used to working with it; the upgraded software feels similar to what I am used to, but handles things differently and the new software is intuitive, but comes with its own language and ways of doing things. I spend most days reading the handbooks and watching online tutorials, but I did manage to create a font. Steamed is a hand drawn all caps display font that comes with a whole bunch of accented glyphs (even Vietnamese) to play around with.

Initially inspired by an untitled typeface from an old hand-lettering book, Berber has been extensively developed over two incarnations to function as a very strong and confident sans. The 2011 Berber revisions have enabled Berber to be used across longer settings as well as its more conventional use on larger applications such as signage. Berber was used as the text face for issue 46 of Eye, the graphic design journal. The typeface now features both king caps and small caps. Extensive additions to the numerals sets and complete opentype sets of international diacritics also extend its usage.

Originally I wanted to call this font Chewy Caramel, because I love caramel. But that name was already taken, so I deleted two letters in the name and ended up with Chewy Camel instead. I know that the designer of Chewy Caramel don’t mind - because that is my good friend, David, who made that one! :) Chewy Camel was made with a slightly blurry and inky pen, and is suitable for most things that need a true organic hand lettered font. I have added 6 slightly different versions of each letter, and there is multilingual support as well

I needed a name with ‘brush’ in it and most have already been taken, so I did a little digging and found out that Purshia tridentata, a flowering plant native to the mountainous areas of western North America is called bitterbrush. It is also known as antelope brush, quinine brush and buckbrush - but I settled on Bitterbrush. There’s nothing bitter about Bitterbrush. It is actually a very sweet hand brushed font. It comes with ligatures for double letter combinations and a truck load of diacritics. And (something I am very proud of): it supports the Vietnamese language!

In 2006 the art director of Emotion, a women’s psychology magazine, asked me to design a copy typeface for them. Before I actually got the job I started to work on a serif. I wanted it to be feminine but still clear and modern. On one hand there are the floral round elements and on the other hand the angular serifs. In the composition I wanted the two extremes to work together. All the other elements had to be harmonized. The proportions needed to match the magazine’s requirements. The ascenders and descenders are short enough to work in narrow columns but long enough to work in small sizes. As you can imagine, the emotion-job never happened. Verse is now a serif and a san-serif with 7 weights with italics and smallcaps. In copy you should not get heavier than Heavy. Extrabold and Ultrabold work best in display.

Jean Evans' interest in type design dates back to her third-grade fascination with fancy script writing. Years later, work at a sign-painting school she found in the Yellow Pages® cemented her relationship with letterforms. A piece of British sheet music for “You’re Sweeter than I Thought You Were” [from the 1935 film “Jack of All Trades” starring Jack Hulbert] provided inspiration for a digital typeface based on the credits for Hulbert and the film that rather than the song’s title. What’s interesting is the lettering style was influenced by Art Nouveau at a time when Art Deco was gaining in popularity. The result is Sweet Treats JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. (According to Wikipedia, John Norman ‘Jack’ Hulbert (April 24, 1892 – March 25, 1978) was a British actor, director, screenwriter and singer, specializing primarily in comedy productions, and often working alongside his wife Cicely Courtneidge.)

Shout is a “Hey, Look at ME” font. It is an attention-getting font for posters, flyers and ads. Its lineage includes the Haas Type Foundry’s 19th century advertising font, Kompakte Grotesk, which Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) dryly described as “extended sans serif” and which graphic designer Roland Holst (1868-1938) would have disapprovingly referred to as a “shout,” as opposed to the quiet presentation of information that he believed was the proper function of advertising. In 1963 Letraset released what appears to be an updated variation in multiple weights designed by Frederick Lambert called Compacta. Shout draws heavily on Compacta, as well as other similar fonts of the 50s and 60s like Eurostile Bold Condensed and Permanent Headline. In weight, it falls about halfway between Compacta Bold and Compacta Black, but with a relatively heavier lower case that is not so easily pushed around by the upper case. After all, one can shout while sitting down. Shout is the first font released with our new encoding, as noted in the All_customer_readme.txt. The Euro symbol has been moved to position 128 and the Zcaron/zcaron have been added at positions 142/158 respectively. Otherwise, Shout has our usual idiosyncratic glyph selection, with the German ch/ck instead of braces, a long s instead of the Greek mu and our usual Hand-in-Hand symbol. There are also left and right glyphs of a big mouth ]ing (135/137) and left and right glyphs of an angry man shouting (172/177). Please use Shout with discretion. Folks get tired of being yelled out. After awhile, they stop listening. Shout ML represents a major extension of the original release, with the following changes: 1. Added glyphs for the 1250 Central Europe, the 1252 Turkish and the 1257 Baltic Code Pages. Add glyphs to complete standard 1252 Western Europe Code Page. Moniak Sans is a linear, humanist sans with a vertical stress axis. Distinctive for its open strokes, Moniak features generally broader typeface proportions to offer excellent readability even at small sizes. This property also supports lowercase stroke endings. The designer emphasised elegant, pure curves in the skeleton of the font, making it optically friendly and inviting in magazine headline and poster applications. Most languages using Latin script are supported.

Designed at Polygraphmash type design bureau in 1984 by Vladimir Yefimov, with the addition of demi and demi italic. Based on a hot-metal typeface (1962) by Moscow book designer Vadim Lazurski (1909–1994), inspired by the early 16th century typefaces of Italian Renaissance.
