I took Arquà’s curvy lines from some details in art nuveau posters from late 1800 / early ‘900, then I added to the mix a little bit of elegance with some weird contrast (look at the S). One hour in the hoven and a modern looking display font came out in 2 weights: Goodboy and the doppelganger Badboy perfect to mix up.

I don't know what is it with me and bad copy machines these days...my previous font also had that look, like it was made using a poor copy machine! :) Basic Choice comes in a regular, solid and distressed version - use these versions as they are, or play around and use them as layers. Each letter has 6 different versions, and they automatically cycle as you type. It makes the text look scrambled and random at the same time!

I like playing around with brushes and Chinese ink. I always have some kind of idea of what the final design should look like, but once it’s done, it never ever looks like what I had in mind. Apex Brush is one of those designs: it started off as a few brush strokes, but before I knew it, I had a really nice set of matching brush fonts! Steinwald font was named after a mountain range slash nature park in southern Germany. I have to admit that I have never been there, but this font was just screaming for a good German name and I settled on Steinewald (which, in German, means Stone Forest). Steinwald was made by hand and cleaned up by computer. It looks quite neat, but its edges are a bit rough, giving it ‘ye olde handmade look’! Use it for your posters, your product packaging and your supermarket signs. Comes with extensive language support.

Nutcase is a perfect example of a font that principally designed itself. I created a hexagonal template (the most economical form in nature by the way) and took out the center to increase the decorative element. I played around with it, creating some pleasing characters at first but it soon became clear it would translate into a complete alphabet, so I set to work applying the idea to both upper and lower cases. It wasn't all straight forward though, avoiding awkward characters and retaining legibility took a little perseverance but it eventually paid off. I thought of this primarily as a decorative display face but having tested it out, found it reads surprisingly well as body copy too.

I was listening to an Opeth album called Blackwater Park. By the time I had decided that this font needed some swirls, the band was playing a song called The Drapery Falls - which has the word ‘spiraling’ in it (see poster 2) - and the name was born. Spiraling down is a surprisingly elegant font (given its roughness). I probably wouldn’t set a whole text in it, but it will really stand out as a titling font for packaging or book covers.

In 1932, Xanti Schawinsky (1904?1979) designed an alphabet that combines two styles: a neo-classic stroke contrast paired with characteristics of stencil lettering. This mix is a child of its time and seems to reflect the Swiss and Italian biography of Schawinski. Luca Pellegrini took on the modern look and re-drew the letterforms, interrupted by subtle spaces where thick and thin strokes meet. Although Schawinsky had already designed a complete alphabet and figures in the early 1930s, Pellegrini took the character set to another level, adding currency signs, mathematical symbols and all kinds of punctuation ? anything needed to set more than just headlines. Xants is a blend of Swiss elegance and exclusiveness with Italian charm and imperfection, a combination that never gets old.

This "Leaf" font has been swirling in my head for years - I remember my sister and I making letter formations like these when I was young. It was exciting to see the lettering look even better on paper than it did in my mind! "Leaf" surprised me by having two distinct looks: in size 24 or smaller, the look is delicate, because your eye doesn't see any space in the letters. In size 28 or larger, the eye can discern spaces, which gives a different facet to its personality. As much as I like this font when viewed on a monitor screen, it really shines when printed. The "Leaf" font is a perfect blend of quaint hand-written style mixed with crisp letter formations. This font has a very "happy" quality to it. LFT Arnoldo began as an all-caps book cover typeface created during the rebranding of Oscar Mondadori, the most important Italian publisher, with over 4,500 titles from ancient classics to contemporary works, and spanning academic essays to children’s and self-help books. For such a diverse catalogue, it was necessary to find a coherent and flexible paradigm which took into account genre and readership differences and ensured harmony among its works. The main idea was to create a typeface suitable for the branding element and which could be used for each title of the immense catalogue. So what makes LFT Arnoldo a companion to the centuries? Eyadish is an entertaining, comic, and childish font. The name of this font is originally derived from two main syllables. The first one is "Eyad-" which refers to my first name and the second syllables is "-ish" which means characteristics of or relating to. Hence, "Eyadish" refers to the characteristics that "Eyad", the typographer, himself has and had during his childhood. I do like this font for its childish and comic shapes. I have decided to design this font trying to leave a humble and personal imprint regarding the magic and innocent world of all children. Frankly, it is my most favorable designed font.
