I like the expression ‘being on tenterhooks’. Not that I’m on tenterhooks very often! Tenterhooks was made with a broken satay skewer (see poster 2 for the actual thing) and Chinese ink. It came out rather rough, but it does have a nice flow and a certain ‘wild elegance’. Comes with double letter ligatures and a whole bunch of diacritics.

The market for humanistic sans serif type families is saturated, so what can a new release add, and what does it take to stand out from the crowd? Asterisk Sans Pro (named after my favourite glyph to make) aims to be a highly versatile type family; massively useful due to its pan-European language support and bounty of OpenType features which make it the ideal choice for demanding typography. The look is contemporary; details which give the fonts character at large sizes all but disappear when small, making the middle weights suitable for large chunks of text. The family ranges from a hairline ultra light to a pretty weighty black – a must in a new typeface. The design of VLNL Mais started out as a thought experiment – "How would it look if you dressed up FuturaBlack in LatinWide serifs?” DBXL drew up the first sketches on graph paper in 2014. Although the concept looked promising enough, it ended up dormant in a desktop folder. To be resurfaced recently when covid-19 started spreading and we were asked to all stay home. The final design ended up with a distinct latino flavour due to the long spikey serifs. They look like tortilla chips. And as maize is the main ingredient in many South-American and specifically Mexican dishes – tortillas, burritos, nachos, tamales, tacos – a name was quickly found. VLNL Mais was designed by DBXL, and can be used for logos, headlines, flyers or posters (and not just for Mexican restaurants). It can be found in the VetteLetters vegetable section.

I found this type specimen on the statue of Jan Hus in Prague’s Old Town Square. The statue was designed in 1903 by Ladislav Saloun, and its writing is the cutest Nouveau font I've ever seen. Filling in the blanks, I realized the need for a standard lower case because the caps are so wild. The result is a very type-able and dynamic Nouveau. I grew up with the ‘Save The Whales’ slogan: I remember watching the news and seeing little Greenpeace dinghies taking on huge Japanese whalers, and activists clinging on for dear life. I haven’t heard that slogan for a while: maybe because whaling is soooo 1890’s, but also maybe because the world has other problems to address. Out of respect for the ‘Save The Whale’ activists, I named this fattish font Whale Song. Whale Song is a robust comic font.
