Why Baka Expert? There’s actually a simple answer. The original Baka was done as an experiment of sorts. I wanted to quickly capture a rough, frenetic handwriting style that broke normal conventions. Commercially, it was successful, received some accolades ... but I wasn’t completely satisfied, so I went back to the master art and the lettering explorations and produced Baka Too. This addressed some of the line items I wanted to refine in Baka. I liked it. Each font has been out for a few years now, and I have seen them in use. I’m very critical of my work, and I could still see things—modulations of strokes, angle of the nib, ink swell, and so on—that I wanted to change, refine, and reorder. For me, it is typographic indulgence, but I wanted to take this handwriting ‘font’ and turn it into a robust ‘typeface.’ So I did just that and a bit more by adding back more of my initial flourish concepts; attaining tighter, consistent control of the modulation; optimizing points; adding titling options; and expanding the character language set. Baka and Baka Too had to exist to produce this entirely new re-envisioning of an old friend ... and they all play well together :)

Drawing Tablet JNL was created based on those two words hand-lettered on the cover of a sketch pad from the late 40s - early 50s. It is reminiscent of the popular Deco typefaces of the time.

A revival of one of the popular serif wooden type fonts of the 19th century, tall x height, quite short descenders, thin, rounded serifs, thick stems, based on Roman styles, deliberate, accurate rendering of the original.

An historical font based on early 18th century printing, with the visual effect of uneven inking and indifferent presswork on handmade paper. Ideal for evoking the period. Effective in continuous text setting or in display sizes.

Pen Gothic JNL emulates lettering made with a round nib lettering pen, and is loosely based on some text found on the popular 1918 song "Ja-Da". The font is available in regular and oblique versions.

The Vtg Stencil series of fonts by astype are based on real world stencils. The UK No. 2 design was derived from authentic one inch A2 Roman stencil plates from Great Britain, manufactured around the 1950s.

The Rostrum fonts are a revival and expansion of a type called Oleander, designed in 1938 by Julius Kirn for the Genzsch & Heyse foundry in Hamburg. Many of the original uppercase letters had some blackletter remnants tacked onto them, so in this digital version they were relegated to the Rostrum Two font, while more contemporary forms were designed for the Rostrum One font. Characters from both fonts are interchangeable via software programs' font menus and glyph palettes in the Postscript and True Type versions, while the OpenType version takes advantage of the Ligatures, Contextual Alternates and Stylistic Alternates features to perform character substitutions. Rostrum finds the middle ground between italic and brush script, which makes it quite usable in all-caps settings. Its majuscules have a very distinct curl that makes the typeface effect-ready and very appealing in packaging design. Plenty of alternates and ligatures are sprinkled throughout the character set.

Almost every type designer feels the need, from time to time, to interrupt his or her serious work on complex text type systems for something more playful. In Luc(as)'s case this has often meant designing more typefaces. In the early 1990s, while working on Thesis, Luc(as) drew several display faces which were based on the shapes of TheSans but were either de(con)structive versions or experimental variations. Jesus Loves You All is a heretic thorny typeface vaguely based on the outlines of TheSans. Jesus Loves You was given a remarkable three-dimensional treatment in Abbott Miller's Dimensional Type project.

Plantain Stencil is based on Plantain which in turn is my interpretation of Plantin Adweight, which was one of my first commissioned projects (by Smarter Image, long before they went bankrupt). Plantin Adweight is one of the most beautiful designs of the Plantin family, which is a modern revival typeface, cut under the direction of F. H. Pierpont in 1913, who based the design on that of a famous 16th century printer, Christophe Plantin, for whom Pierpont’s font was named. The stencil cut of Plantain adds a bit of sparkle to the design. Supports most European languages that use the Latin alphabet.

DaiVernon is based on the handwriting of card magician extraordinaire Dai Vernon. Known as "The Professor", Vernon was a beloved expert in sleight-of-hand and card magic. These fonts are based on the penmanship in his notebooks from the 1920s, which feature almost no lowercase letters. DaiVernon Direct is based on what appears to be his hastier style, while DaiVernon Misdirect is based on his neater hand. Numerous OpenType bonus glyphs, contextual alternates and discretionary ligatures help to create the feel of his handwriting. The 1960s was the most tumultuous decade of the 20th century. Sixties Symbols JNL collects twenty-six icons and phrases from that time of change and unrest including the peace symbol, a dove, a daisy—even the militant 'power fist' that signified rebellion against mainstream society. The inspiration source for Fantasie Monogram is another hand-drawn design from a vintage embroidery publication which relies on rigid geometric letterforms on a dynamic slant stepping downwards. This monogram, which evokes visions of it embossed or printed on antique cookie tins, was originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, but the possibilities of its use are up to your imagination. Jenson Oldstyle was designed by J. W. Phinney of the Dickinson Type Foundry in 1893. Jenson is based on the 'Golden Type' designed by William Morris in 1890 for his private press editions under the imprint of the Kelmscott Press. The original digital Lanston version of this face included a companion Oblique. This remastered set instead features a true italic based on the 1893 ATF italic version as well as a newly digitized Jenson Heavyface based on Phinney's design of 1899. Jenson Italic Pro features alternate lowercase forms based on ATFs then contemporary Cushing Oldstyle Italic.

Designer Nick Curtis found the inspiration for this typeface on a 1920s poster for a German bookseller, by Berlin poster artist Paul Scheurich. ITC Jeepers retains the spontaneity and playfulness of Scheurich's original lettering and adds a few surprises of its own, one being the somewhat exclamatory ear on the lowercase "g". It was, in fact, the excited look of this particular character that gave rise to the font's name. Not to be outdone, the exclamation point takes on an even more startling demeanor.
