Due to some grease on a menu, I misread "Spicy Avocado" as "Spacy Avocado" which led me to the name of this font. Here’s a warm, casual text font based on an early twentieth century work by lettering artist Elizabeth Colwell, released by American Type Founders in 1923. Thorowgood was originally released by the Stephenson Blake typefoundry in the UK. The types were first cut by the English typefounder Robert Thorne, predecessor of William Thorowgood, and first shown in his specimen books in the early nineteenth century. The fat face was revived in roman (1953) and italic. The S and the C appear to be smaller than the other capitals. Most serifs are flat and thin horizontals. In the italic the main strokes of h, k, m, n, and r are curved inwards at the foot.

This is a geometric uncial font with a retro/art-deco feel. It comes in four weights, each in upright and oblique styles. It has Unicode coverage for Latin, Greek (modern diacritics only), and Cyrillic, plus the Euro and peace signs. This font began as part of a project to design a local currency. Sadly, the municipality canceled the endeavor before the design competition had started. I'm including one of the prototypes in the gallery section as an example of this font’s many uses.

IMPORTANT – Please consider the superior Carrig Pro before making a purchase decision. Carrig started its life in 1998. I was working for a design agency in Cork, Ireland and was given a new brand identity project for a lakeside hotel in County Kerry. While visiting the hotel I made various sketches of the surroundings and upon returning to the studio, it was clear that my strongest ideas for the identity would be based on these freehand drawings. I wanted a classic, rough, hand-drawn typeface to complement this style but at that time, the studio didn’t have anything suitable, so I decided to draw my own. I found a Trajan-esque typeface that I really liked the look of in an old calligraphy workbook. I set about drawing my own version and then digitised it. Once the client had seen and approved my design, I began working on creating a complete all caps typeface to use for the hotel’s stationery. With ‘carrig’ being the Gaelic word for ‘rock’, my new typeface was all the more appropriate as it had the appearance of letterforms that had been carved into stone and weathered by time. With the project completed and the client happy, Carrig then sat in my unused fonts folder for several years... but there was always a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that I should do something more with it. So, in the autumn of 2014, I finally set about doing just that and created the font family you now find at MyFonts. Carrig’s form and structure was influenced by a hybrid of Classic Roman and Garalde typeface designs. The original calligraphic elements from the 1998 version of Carrig have been retained to add personality—as can be seen in the serifs, strokes, spurs, terminals and open bowls. Perhaps its most distinctive trait is a high x-height combined with relatively short ascenders. I wanted Carrig to immediately resonate with the reader and have designed it to be familiar and friendly. I imagine designers might choose Carrig as an alternative to such typefaces as Trajan, Garamond and Baskerville. I see Carrig as primarily a display typeface for titles/headlines in printed materials. I would also love to see it being used for branding, packaging and promotional material and am keen to hear from designers who use it in their own work.

Modulario is a geometric sans with some disturbingly individual features. A few capitals owe a bit too much to Roman proportions. The circular O serves to distinguish it from the zero, and the luxuriously wide W and M are both pointed in the middle, although alternatives to the more contentious letters are available within the font. The lowercase shows a little more handwriting influence than is customary – we are used to seeing a writing-style curve at the base of the l, Modulario extends the influence to the i and a, and also sports a uniquely scripty s.

Ida is a simple and utilitarian typeface reminiscent of late 19th/early 20th Century grotesques, yet having a warm and friendly nature. Closed apertures and low contrast combined with elegant skeleton of individual characters create an impression of both rationality and comfort. Technically the font is modern and functional but still calls forth the emotion of a valve radio. Ida comes in 18 styles – 6 roman weights with companion italics and 6 narrow widths. One can also benefit from the use of small caps, alternate characters and indices. The typeface was designed by Maria Kharlamova (Selezeneva) and released by ParaType in 2017.

Amasis is a slab serif design which has been drawn with a humanist approach, rather than the traditional geometric construction associated with this style of letter. The result is a typeface that has an affinity with the Ionics, although in character it belongs to the latter decades of the twentieth century. The Amasis italic fonts, rather than being sloped roman or cursive in nature, are related more to the Old Style italics. Amasis works particularly well in small sizes where readability is important. Amasis has proved excellent for use on low resolution printers and for facsimile transmissions.

MVB Gryphius is a digitization of uncommon type from an era normally associated with the work of Nicolas Jenson. Produced by Otto Trace, the fonts come from types used by Sebastian Gryphius in Lyon in the early 16th century. The italic appears in a book from 1524 and the roman and small caps appear with the same italic in another book printed by Gryphius in 1541. Retaining the rough contours and uneven texture of its source, MVB Gryphius is best used at text sizes from 12- to 15-point, but its old world character can work in display settings too.

Pseudographia is a lighthearted, loving pastiche of “Greek-Style” type inspired by J.M. Bergling’s 1917 “Society Greek” lettering. Happily living in the world of kitschy cross-cultural fonts of the kind found on restaurant awnings around the US, Pseudos is blithely unconcerned with legibility. Instead, it embraces its own benign exoticism and revels in its own chicanery! Pseudographia’s standard letterforms are angular Roman forms. Its Stylistic Set One contains a simplified Small Caps version of the kind commonly seen at Mediterranean eateries. Its Stylistic Set Two contains a full set of outlined Ornamental caps. Opa! Bodoni expresses the beginning of the Industrial Revolution; its serifs are flat, think and unbracketed, while the stress is always on the mathematically vertical strokes. Bodoni believed in plenty of white space and therefore descenders are long. The M is rather narrow; in the Q the tail at first descends vertically and the R has a curled tail. The italic, like most continental modern faces, has roman serifs. Monotype Bodoni provides a clear-cut effect due to its simplicity. It reproduces well, particularly in sizes over 12pt. This font is slightly darker than Bauer Bodoni. The contrast makes Monotype Bodoni appear more condensed.

In Fehlian I blended features of my earlier Arthur and Lindau releases. Fehlian is a sturdy yet sophisticated Art Deco style Roman semi-serif. It is an excellent choice for titlings, headlines, labels, shopfronts and any other display usage which needs to be typographically furnished with something special. Moreover, besides the plain Fehlian font you have the option of yet another two wonderfully decorated versions which lend even more beauty to your designs. Note that Fehlian is a capitals-only product. It has no lowercase but the uppercase is completed for multilingual usage and supports every Euro-Latin language.
