Here I am, once again digging up 60-year sign lettering and trying to reconcile it with the typography of my own time. The truth is I've had this particular Alf Becker alphabet in my sights for a few years now. But in the typical way chaos shuffles the days, Buffet Script and Whomp won the battle for my attentions way back when, then Storefront beat the odds by a nose a couple of years ago. Nevertheless, revisiting Alf Becker’s work is always a breath of fresh air for me, not to mention the ego boost I get from confirming that I can still hack my way through the challenges, which is something I think people ask themselves about more often as they get older. You can never tell what may influence your work, or in this case remind you to dig it out of dust drawers and finally mould it into one of your own experiences. On my recent visits to the States and Canada, I noticed that quite a few high-end steak houses try their best to recreate an urban American 1930s atmosphere. This is quite evident in their menus, wall art, lighting, music, and so on. The ambience says your money is well spent here, because your food was originally choice-cut by a butcher who wears a suit, cooked by a chef who may be your neighbour 20 minutes from downtown, and delivered by a waitress who can do the Charleston when the lights dim and who just wouldn't mind laughing with you over drinks at the bar later. So Steak is just that, a face for menus and wall art in those places that see themselves in the kind of jazzy, noirish world where one-liners rule and exclamation points are part of a foreign language. As is usual with my lettering-inspired faces, there is very little left of the original Alf Becker alphabet. Of course, the challenges present in bringing typographic functionality to what is essentially pure hand lettering gives the spirit of the original art a hell of a rollercoaster ride. But I think that spirit survived the adventure, and may in fact be even somewhat magnified here. This font is over 850 glyphs. It’s loaded with ligatures, swashes, ending forms, alternates, ascender and descender variations, and extended Latin language support. Steak comes in 3 versions. As a late work the “Meier Kapitalis” forms an arch within the typographic creations of the Swiss type designer Hans Meier who died in 2014. The first sketches of this typeface can be found in the teaching manual “The Development of Script and Type” (German: “Die Schriftentwicklung”; French “Le développement des caractères”) which was published in 1994, however, under the title “Roman Lapidary, 1st Century”. The booklet was first published by the Syntax Press, Cham, Switzerland and contains an introduction by Max Caflisch in which he writes: „The present work, „The Development of Script and Type“ is a concise, authoritative textbook, concentrating on the essentials in a wide survey from ancient Greek inscriptions to the printer’s typefaces of the present day. His (Meier’s) 72 varieties of letterforms enable the student or general reader to understand the history of script and type, while more than 60 of his own calligraphic specimens provide excellent models for all who practice this art.“ Unfortunately, the “Meier Kapitalis” is one of the few typeface families in this publication which has been digitized. It was to be the last type project fully realized by Meier. In cooperation with Elsner+Flake, the typeface family was developed and expanded and now contains the four cuts: Roman, Medium, Demi Bold and Bold with either a complement of characters for 78 Latin-based languages (EL=EuropaPlus) or in West-Layout.

OkayCursive began over coffee, in a local flower shop, where my wife takes a floral arrangement class. I discovered a book there, with old photographs from Paris of flower shop displays. What caught my eye in the background of one of these photos, was the hand-painted lettering on a sign. Inspired, I quickly sketched some of the letters on a napkin and stuck it in my pocket. I began to sketch more over the next few days, looking to construct a full-out cursive font with this distinct French look. I wanted my design to be creative & free flowing, but I also wanted it to be at least somewhat proper. So, I consulted some schoolbooks for reference on the correct cursive forms. After more drawing, I began to create the final vector art. Gradually, these ideas -- plus many hours of careful kerning and metrics -- came together to form OkayCursive. Use OkayCursive any time you want fancy, legible, and luxurious text. Works great if you are designing a logo, or use it to create some beautiful titling. Based on the lettering and graphic design of the Beat Generation era, Daddy-O was produced in conjunction with the Whitney Museum of American Art to coincide with the exhibition Beat Culture and the New America: 1950-1965. These way gone fonts and extras both capture and affectionately satirize the graphic design of the era. Package now features poet Rod McKuen in an updated version of the Beatsville album cover from 1959.

The basic letterforms for this typeface were found on a 1920s French poster for Les Arts de Feu by an unnamed artist. The stark geometric forms have been dressed up with an outline treatment, a drop-up shadow and a non-traditional small cap arrangement to make it even more striking, in a spooky kind of way. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Aspidistra is a modern vintage typeface; which is to say a Studio K original with a period feel: it has a strong Art Nouveau influence (a distant cousin of Arnold Bocklin). Why Aspidistra? In the first half of the last century an Aspidistra was a must have accessory of the aspiring middle classes (see George Orwell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying), and to my mind this font evokes the chintzy charm of that era.

In the old Amsterdam neighborhood of 'De Jordaan', you will find a canal called Bloemgracht (Flower Canal). For many years, a coffee store called Schildmeijer could be found here. Their paper coffee bags and advertisements sported a hand made font which I have tried to recreate and the result is Bloemgracht typeface. It is an all caps art deco font, quite angular, but very legible and distinct. Bloemgracht comes with extensive language support.

Built in 1928 in Wichita, Kansas, the Uptown Theater started out as a movie house, but today still exists as a dinner theater. Online images of this vintage venue’s perpendicular wall sign show the theater’s name in an Art Nouveau influenced angular style with rounded terminals – similar to that of pen drawn sign lettering of the era. Ivan Bilibin was one of the best artists and designers of the Russian folk art movement of the early 1900s. His posters and his illustrative work are exceptional, and like many of the artists of the period he did a lot of hand lettering in various old-fashioned and modernistic interpretations of traditional Russian folk calligraphy. Our first Bilibin font is based on his lettering from an illustrated folk story by Alexander Pushkin.

Obrigado means 'Thank You' in Portuguese. It is my way of saying thanks to the unknown designer of a Portuguese port-wine poster from the thirties. Obrigado font is based on that poster. As I had to work with a handful of glyphs, I designed the missing ones myself. Obrigado is a quite elegant and refined art deco font, which would be ideal for posters and logos. Obrigado speaks most Roman based languages.

First published in 1938, Letters and Lettering by Paul Carlyle and Guy Loring was a textbook on lettering examples and how to do them. On one of the pages was found a solid black (counterless) Art Deco sans serif design that in its many variations so typified the era. The example shown in that book served as the model for Postmodern Moderne JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
