Le Havre is a geometric sans serif inspired by the golden era of the passenger ship, when getting to your destination was a delight in and of itself. Compressed capitals, a low x-height and geometric construction give this art deco inspired sans a unique look that looks to the past for inspiration, but is a new contemporary design usable in a wide range of graphic settings. Le Havre features eighteen art deco titling alternates, ligatures and old style figures. Le Havre is named for the port where many a famous luxury cruise liner was launched in the 1930s. One of the best examples of art deco luxury cruise liner advertising can seen in the famous poster advertising the SS Normandie by the French designer Adolphe Mouron Cassandre. In 2009 the Le Havre series was updated with a new thin weight and Le Havre Rounded.

Goth icon and Saturday Night Live voice-over talent, Nicole Blackman grew up surrounded by design; her dad and her sister are architects, her mom is a retired fashion designer and her grandfather invented clip art. “No lie, Volk Clip Art in NJ,” she says. “Herb Lubalin designed his logo!” Sharing her grandfather’s fondness for fonts, Ms. Blackman created this alphabet. Her creativity sparked this lanky lettering’s theatrical nature in all caps and its supple beauty in upper and lower cases. Final fontification and adjustments were done by Chank Diesel. The 1914 sign lettering instruction book “Art Alphabets and Lettering” by J. M. Bergling showcased many hand lettered alphabets as an inspiration to both up-and-coming and established sign painters. One page in particular featured a classic free-form Art Nouveau style with rounded shapes. This style of lettering was emulated in the 1960s by designers of rock concert posters, so the style is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period as well as the 1960s. Old Time Nouveau JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Although the Art Deco movement is generally attributed to the 1930s and 1940s, a number of design influences were showing up during the late 1920s in what is referred to as the Art Nouveau period. The Dutch illustrator Anton Kurvers’ hand lettering on the front cover of the (1927) magazine “Het Vlaamsche Volstooneel” clearly shows the clean lines and Avant Garde geometrics that foreshadow Art Deco. This attractive pre-Deco lettering has been recreated digitally as Dutch Deco JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Ciseaux was inspired and is dedicated to the art of paper cutting. Early paper cutting artists were often royalty, but it soon became a folk art practiced by commoners whose cutouts decorated their homes. By the seventeenth century it had spread throughout the world. The Japanese called it Mon-kiri, the German's Scherenschnitte and Turkey even boasted a guild devoted to the art form. In Poland the designs were traditionally symmetrical and often used layers of colors to form pictorial collages. When Russian invaders confiscated scissors, villagers were found to cut their intricate designs with sheep shears! The art form later developed into cutting out elaborate designs of nature scenes and people, celebrating special occasions and even decorating legal documents. Ciseaux letterforms mimic paper cutting art in its shapes with a rather loose and almost joyous rhythm. The overall effect is somewhat earthy and natural yet it has an element of sophistication that cannot be ignored. Just like paper cutting, Ciseaux can be used for special occasions like invitations, brochures, identities, restaurant menus, and if you dare, some awesome looking paper graffiti. Syracuse is a font inspired by the typefaces of the "Arts & Crafts" designers of the early 20th Century. As such, it has a distinct "hand" look. In "Syracuse" you will find hints of Dard Hunter's work at the Roycrofters in East Aurora, New York, a little of the Art Nouveau style of 1900 Vienna, even a touch of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's design ideas in Glasgow, Scotland. The font was named for the city in New York where Gustav Stickley produced his Craftsman furniture. Syracuse owes a debt to all of these sources yet is original and different from any other "Arts & Crafts" font available.

Nick Curtis's love affair with typography began when he was barely past adolescence, in a neighborhood alley of East Dallas. On a routine patrol for tossed treasures, he came across a type specimen catalog: a big, fat green binder displaying hundreds of fonts! He was hooked. Curtis's career has taken him from production art to graphic design to art direction, but type has always remained his graphic passion, especially the provocative designs produced from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. Curtis's inspiration for ITC CuppaJoe comes from Art Deco lettering, but not from the typical sources. Depending upon your age or your interest in early twentieth-century package design ITC CuppaJoe might look familiar. Its foundation is the label art for Bokar, A&P's premium coffee during the 1930s. Curtis built on the gently sweeping curves and bold angular strokes of the original coffee-can lettering to create a distinctive typeface that commands attention. Jugendstil Kunsthand is based on a sample of late 19th century lettering in a style often associated with artists of the Jugendstil Art Nouveau movement in Germany. The characters are done in heavy outline with a rough-hand drawn look. The style is interesting because it shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on Art Nouveau with many of the characters featuring alternate versions that nest together in a manner typical of Arts & Crafts lettering.

The Linotype® Gujarati typeface was originally developed in 1983 by the Linotype letter-drawing studio under Fiona Ross’s art direction. This revival was designed by Gunnar Vilhjálmsson and Kalapi Gajjar with Fiona Ross as a consultant. The family has five weights from Light to Black. It is a traditional design, optimized for setting lengthy text copy for print projects or for use on screens. While faithful to the original design, Linotype Gujarati introduces many design improvements, additional weights, and an extended character set. This new Linotype Gujarati is part of a project to refresh the pivotal Linotype Bengali and Linotype Devanagari typefaces and make them available for the first time in the popular OpenType font format.

The main inspiration is from Art Nouveau which flourished in Europe at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This design included furniture (Majorelle, Lalique) and architecture (Victor Horta, Henry Van de Velde, Gaudi, Alfons Mucha). But Hector Guimard remains the favorite for all aspects of its art and, of course, its typefaces used on the Parisian Metropolitan posters. In particular, the various kerning of the various letters he used to make the poster a whole design from singular designs, leading to numerous variations. As a designer, I first worked with the individual glyphs Hector Guimard designed and I discovered that they vary constantly from a poster to another, depending on the overall result he was looking for. Another difficulty in transferring his design to printing is that there was no lower case. I was excited to create the whole font from the original designs of Hector Guimard, incorporating its variations and "crazy kerning". After several attempts, it appeared to be impossible to include all variations and I slightly moved to my own new design as a complete font, upper and lower case, with kerning. I voluntarily limited the ascenders and descenders to the usual typography so that it can be used from 10 / 12 points. This version can be used to edit letters and books in the context of Art, specially Art Nouveau and Art Deco of course, posters of any kind.

A poster for the publication “The Quartier Latin – A Magazine Devoted to the Arts” featured the magazine’s name in a light Art Nouveau serif style. The Quartier Latin was published between 1896 and 1899 by the American Art Association of Paris. This is now available as Nouveau Meadow JNL in both regular and oblique versions.
