In 1966 and 1967 a series of weird events spooked Point Pleasant, a small town in West Virginia. Townspeople described a creature that looked like a man, with red eyes and moth-like wings, which appeared at several locations around town. The Mothman myth was born. Mothman font is spooky as well. It is a very scratched and distorted typeface, completely hand drawn, using ink and various sharp utensils. Mothman font will surely leave a lasting impression!

Reverse Calendar Blocks JNL is the third typeface from Jeff Levine that allows the user to create a vintage-style calendar. Other versions available are Calendar Blocks JNL and Monthly Calendar JNL. Village Green JNL is based upon a font called “Giraffe Extended” from the 1892 edition of the MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan type specimen book, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Its Art Nouveau styling can also fit well with 1960s counter-culture revival projects. According to Wikipedia “A village green is a common open area within a village or other settlement. Historically, a village green was common grassland with a pond for watering cattle and other stock, often at the edge of a rural settlement, used for gathering cattle to bring them later on to a common land for grazing. Later, planned greens were built into the centres of villages.”

Raw herring is the Dutch sashimi. Every year at the beginning of the summer a new batch of freshly caught herring arrives at Holland’s quays. Fishing boats actually race each other to be the first boat bringing it home. The fresh herring is called ‘Hollandsche Nieuwe’ (Holland’s new). This typeface, designed by Donald Roos, is based on the typography of Dutch fish shops and stalls. Inspired by lettering from the 30’s and 40’s, infused with some ‘techno’ flavour, Hollandsche Nieuwe is the brand new fresh fishy type flavor on your computer! Monthly Calendar JNL is a companion font to Calendar Blocks JNL, and features classic wood type lettering and numerals from the 1800s. A set of large numbers are on their own keys, while the numbers 1-31 reside on the A-Z and a-e keys respectively. The days of the week are on the lower case “f” through “l” keys, while the names of the months are found on the “m” through “x” positions. An open rectangle is on the lower case “y” key, and a solid black rectangle is on the “z”. For those who wish to use the 23/30 and 24/31 configurations, they can be found on the left and right parenthesis.

The tale of Pumpkinseed began with a bit of hand-printing I noticed on the dinner menu at a local restaurant. I took a menu home for future reference. Several months later, some similar hand-lettering on another dinner menu caught my eye. I became a sort of connoisseur of hand-done menu lettering. After tweaking and adjusting a few of these menu-inspired (uppercase) characters, I placed them -- along with some other designs -- in an online Type in Progress survey. They won. So I finished the caps, drew out the lower case from scratch, created three weights and oblique styles. The result: Pumpkinseed, a full-featured casual hand-lettering face. Comes in Light, Medium, and Heavy.

Straight Line is essentially an outline Modern, but drawn without any curves whatsoever. Thin horizontals and thick verticals provide the classic look of a Didone, updated and enhanced by clean, minimalist geometry. In addition to the Straight Line font itself, the package includes Straight Line Solid with matching spacing and kerning. The Solid font can be used solo, or layered with the outline font to provide a colour background. Straight Line is an excellent display face for contemporary, eye-catching headings and sub-headings, and the fonts contain a full complement of Latin Extended-A characters. The typeface was inspired by a 1930s experimental alphabet by the British artist, Percy J Smith.

Coriander is the work of British designer Timothy Donaldson. It started out as a doodle one afternoon Donaldson was bored and uninspired. He wrote the word Coriander" and was then distracted by the sun beating through an adjacent window. He taped the writing paper up on the window as a shade. He took it down a few months later, folded it up, and stuck it in his pocket. When the piece of paper fell out of his pocket a week later, he was inspied to draw the rest of the characters, two alphabets in his sketchbook. The final digitized characters were created by Donaldson using a Wacom tablet and later refined on the screen."

He named Gertrud after his better half, but was also inspired by old handwritten documents: "Gertrud is a calligraphic letter design from the 16th century. I used it when I engrossed diplomas with a flat-nibbed pen in the 1980's. When I got my Mac I generated the typeface in Fontographer." Bureau Grot is now accepted as the essence of tooth and character in an English 19th-century sans. The current family was first developed by David Berlow in 1989 from original specimens of the grotesques released by Stephenson Blake in Sheffield. These met with immediate success at the Tribune Companies and Newsweek, who had commissioned custom versions at the behest of Roger Black. Further weights were designed by Berlow for the launches of Entertainment Weekly and the Madrid daily El Sol, bringing the total to twelve styles by 1993. Jill Pichotta, Christian Schwartz, and Richard Lipton expanded the styles further, at which point the family name was shortened from Bureau Grotesque to Bureau Grot; FB 1989–2006

Simple - The Bilingual Font. The process of Simple began with the usual alphabets followed by a series of icons and soon it was an avalanche of Chinese characters. The pool of proposed Chinese characters were loosely determined by the needs of a lunar calender. In a nutshell, Simple is a single-weight, minimal, grid-based Sans-serif display. Prudent with details and sturdy in form, the geometrically-driven structure marks the foundation of a cross-cultural assortment of Latin alphabets, Chinese characters and thematic icons. The inspiration for this typeface family came from my childhood experiences at West Monkton, amidst an historic part of the South West of England. Studies of the original incised capitals of the Trajan column in Rome were analysed and polished for this modern version. The lower case letterforms and numerals were then created in sympathy, taking their proportions from the incised letters of local gravestones. Its name honours not only the area where the original alphabet was conceived and drawn, but also the people responsible for fostering my initial interest in letters. These stylized incised typefaces give a depth to the letterforms that can be exploited in your typography - evoking the carved monumental inscriptions of the Roman era.

The hand lettered credits from the 1942 British film comedy “The Goose Steps Out” became the model for Goose Creek JNL, a simple sans serif design available in both regular and oblique versions. According to the Internet Movie Database (imdb), “A bumbling teacher turns out to be the double of a German general. He is flown into Germany to impersonate the general and cause chaos and hilarity in a Hitler Youth college.” The title is a parody of the “goosestep” style of marching by German soldiers during World War II. As a variant on the movie’s title, the font was named for Goose Creek, South Carolina – a charming community just northeast of historic Charleston.

It all started with making of a simple all-caps font. I drew the whole alphabet, numbers all else needed - but something wasn't quite right...the lettershapes were fine, but quite boring. Then I took a drastic decision: I started all over again ... meaning, I printed the whole thing, messed it up using a wet cloth and wrinkled the paper - then scanned it all again, and imported all the graphics yet again. A lot of work, yes - but personally I think it was worth it! But anyway, that's the story of how Primitivus was made ... well, almost, but not quite ... but that's another story! Use Primitivus for anything that needs that special kind of look were handdrawn letters meets grunge! My goal for Harfang was to create a serif typeface that would be easy to read at text sizes, while having a strong personality at larger sizes. The initial design had a purely rounded style, but with each development pass I introduced some angularity. The final result is a typeface that is easy to read in long texts, advertising copy, annual reports and the like; but one that also provides a crisp and stylish appeal in more prominent display settings. I choose the name Harfang (Harfang des neiges — Snowy Owl or Great White Owl) because after my first typeface, Migration, I wanted something with a thematic relation. On a more personal level, Harfang is the official bird of Québec, a province with a long winter and a wonderful, white landscape, and the place I call home. —André Simard
